I am using this post as an example as I know you're not the only one to say this but:

Regardless of the fact that he played slightly out of position, he was still played in an attacking role. Thus, his return of 2(?) assists and no goals is still quite frankly terrible.

Furthermore, whilst I accept it is not his main quality, and that in previous clubs he wasn't instructed to track back as much, the amount of times he would bottle a challenge, or slowly stroll back rather than sprint when the opposing team were attacking was simply infuriating.

He is not suited to the Prem. Even if he was played centrally I severely doubt he will be significantly more effective.

Tom - this just isn't true! You either weren't watching or your evident dislike of the player is colouring your opinion. He often had a crack at goal, although it's true it was unfortunately without results. One supposes that he's only too well aware of the dissatisfaction of many fans with his performances. I think he was so desperate to please towards the end of the season that he got to be almost McGuganesque in his shooting from wherever he happened to find himself with the ball at his feet. He was unlucky not to have bagged himself at least one, but the keepers in the Prem are good, good, good.

I've always liked an unpredictable player with tricks and skills. One who'll run at the defence and twist and turn and flick and nutmeg.

Jurado is one of those. And a pretty good one too. If things had gone very slightly differently for him, he could have been a hero here. If a player with that much obvious ability had turned out in a yellow shirt a few years back, we would have worshipped and eulogised him.

Unfortunately the bored, spoilt, £50 a ticket Premiership punters of today have taken against him after a single season.

There's so much venom and malice against the poor fella now, that he might as well leave for somewhere he'll perhaps be better appreciated.

Do you see the contradiction there?

It wasn't "unfortunate" - it was merely the result of him being lame at shooting.

    Jurado is anything but unpredictable...

I may well be guilty of letting a few standout memories from way back in the season cloud my judgement slightly. I would say though at what point does it go from unlucky not to score to unable to over the course of the season, whether his or tactics he had to play to fault he never managed to find himself in a goal scoring position be it a loose ball etc.

I do feel sorry for him and QSF probably shafted him a bit with continuing to play him out wide and selecting him constantly ahead of other crowd favourites meant he probably got less leeway than others even when going through our bad patch. A technically very good player who I don’t have any real dislike for I supported him for a long time and there were a few matches I remember him being the only player the whole game to show and go and take the ball and try to do something. I do think he’d do well in La Liga and I agree if he had turned up the same time as FF for example he probably could have been a favourite but for one reason or another I’m not sure Jurado has ever managed to connect with the fans too well?

I like to think I will always give a player fair time and judgement and even said in Jan when we signed what looked like a winger in Amrabat that he may well look a different player with a wide man to pick out instead of having to find those small pockets of space in the congested middle.

I just can’t see us feeling his loss too much if he were to go especially the way our recruitment looks set to have another heavy push, if the new manager decided to play with an out an out No.10 I’d be all for him staying and seeing what he can do there but I can’t see it happening I’m afraid.

What's interesting about people's evaluation of Jurado's season is that it's largely based on his lack of end product. This is a good way of judging players as ultimately it's goals and assists that count .However, I can remember quite a few occasions when he put someone through on goal with a decent through ball or cross and the player failed to score. Not really his fault and if they had all scored and he had 6 or 7 assists would people feel differently about him? I haven't got the facts in front of me and without going back and watching every game again I can't say exactly how many times this happened, but I've got 2 or 3 of these in my head (Ighalo vs Liverpool/Abdi vs Stoke/Villa?) and I figure there must be more.

I would like to see Jurado stay, but only if he is going to be played in a central position where I still think he could be very effective. Equally Id id get sick of sweeing him played out of position time and again and if wouldn't want him starting out wide ever again.

  9. wfcmoog

I think the lack of end product is just the coup de grace. The way people see him play with zero dynamism and no bottle is what has turned fans against him. That and his obvious talent which seems wasted due to lack of positive attacking intent.

If things had gone differently and jurado had a completely different season or was a different player things would have gone differently, very differently indeed.

Think he is technically one of the best players ever to play for us. Not really suited to our game, and would do well back in Spain where they play more possession football

The first point is a bit obvious, we were in the Championship so of course he's going to be a better player against weaker opposition.

Second point, how long does he get? 2000 minutes worth of football is enough to judge a player, especially considering he's 29, almost 30.

If we signed the World Football Skills Champion, who was great at skills and tricks but **** at an actual game situation, would he be technically the best player ever to play for us?

Great player. Neat and tidy and with flair.

And with a full season under his belt now, what he will be capable of next season is a thrilling prospect.

Playing just behind deeney and our new star striker, with two mad foreigners no-one's ever heard of bombing up and down the wings, it's going to be raining goals.

What a time to be a watford fan. And yet still half you ***** are moaning like you're watching those ***** up the road. Pathetic.

Deeney going Spurs, will have to be Jurado up top by himself playing towards his own goal so when he passes backwards it goes in the opposition net.

I think we should build the whole team around Jurado and make him captain if Deeney leaves.

Agreed he may have bottled some challenges, but there was plenty of attacking intent certainly when he played further forward and in some games he was literally the only player who was actually showing any attacking intent.

I'd agree that currently we have one of our best ever teams, but it terms of attacking fluidity, it doesn't really suit a player like Jurado.

He's a number 10, shunted out onto the wing, watching the ball get punted time after time up to the strikers.

  19. I don't single out Jurado, Abdi was equally pointless / worthless /contributed nothing out on the wing

The solution was obvious to everyone except Quique Pulis

    1. Jurado has no pace, has the build and shot power of a schoolboy.
    2. Defence always knew any crosses would be to the near post (if at all) as he couldn’t hit a ball further ;) (no whip on a cross).
    3. Lack of end product – Goals, assists, even key passes (those that don’t end in goals or assists) were poor whatever position he played in.
    4. He (and many others) were tied to QSF tactics so he can’t be blamed when told ball retention (square or back passes) is the objective.
    5. Regardless, he neglected his defensive duties on many occasions.
    6. Solution: if he stays then when he plays (and this relates to Abdi also) he must play in his preferred position. My opinion is he should at best be a squad player.

Suarez – shouldn’t be this thread but it seems there is some convergence? :
Given the time he can see & thread a pass better than most. Trouble is he hasn’t got the time (kept on getting his pocket picked), hasn’t got the pace and would need players around him to protect him.
Surely it is Capoue v Suarez – one of those 2 for that position. Well out of those 2 I know who I would prefer (that is not to say that we may upgrade further and both of them will be back-up).

Probably the most inaccurate post I have seen on this board?

Let me just remind of his stats against Norwich; courtesy of Whippendell Woods

He made 14 passes, 10 in the opposition half. Only above Nyom in total passes who produced one of the worst performances in years.
He touched the ball 30 times. The lowest apart from Nyom.
None of his passes were made to Igahlo or Deeney.

I don't care if you are playing slightly out of position, to not even direct one of your FOURTEEN passes to the only 2 players in front of you is unacceptable.
It's not even up for debate, they are the facts.

He showed barely anything all season. It got so bad that the people who back him tried to merit him for our goal at West Brom because he passed to Geuds, who took 4 touches, tried to go round the defender, took a shot which was deflected wide and we scored from the resulting corner which Gueds delivered. That's embarrassing.

It's incredibly frustrating to see someone with obvious talent have such a limited impact over the course of a whole season. If you look at his career after leaving Atletico, it's probably not too surprising though. He went to Schalke, did ok then lost his place, only made 10 league starts in his final season and was shipped out. Went to Spartak Moscow in an easier league, did ok then lost his place, only made 10 league starts in his final season and was shipped out. Then he comes to us and never really shows any ability to influence a game other than a handful of twenty minute spells. His career looks like it's been on a downward spiral for some time.

This season he looked like a guy completely devoid of confidence and as the season went on he seemed to hide more and more (although perhaps that was my frustration with him growing). Fabbrini was another technically good footballer who didn't cut the mustard for us but he never hid. Even after the umpteenth time of failing to spot a simple pass or falling over looking for a foul, Fabbrini would be asking for the ball again ready to give it another go. I didn't see that from Jurado, he never went looking for the ball and seemed to give up trying to force his way into a game. Towards the end of the season he just looked like he was going through the motions to me and not really enjoying his football. Hopefully he'll find his confidence and form again, whether for us or somewhere else but I certainly wouldn't count on it.

He certainly looked like a player who was ill at ease with many aspects of the league.Clearly has talent but perhaps more suited to La Liga?

I've always liked an unpredictable player who can twist and turn and flick and nutmeg too, but Jurado ISN'T one of those.

He gets the ball, lovely first touch. Plays with it a bit, and either (1) passes back to the left back, (2) passes 5 yards square or (3) driblles inside and then either passes square or passes back to the left back.

I didn't find that awfully difficult to predict.

I thought he had a pretty wretched season.

But so did many other players who all have so much more to give. I think that must be down to QSF - who has gone.

It would be interesting to see how many of them perform under a coach who has a pretty good reputation of getting the best out of players.

Shame the rest of us don't know mate - unless you're seriously expecting us to believe you'd take Suarez over Capoue on the evidence of both players' form since signing?

Perhaps I'm missing something but wasn't the pass to Guedioura a "key pass"? Going by BusheyOrn's definition that it doesn't have to lead to an assist, then I'd say that it qualifies. And at the risk of being accused of straw clutching, since I was the one who brought it up I'm going to continue to insist that he does deserve some credit for that. I remember at the time of watching thinking that it was one of Jurado's smarter moves - it wasn't just a case of him squaring an easy short pass to Gueds, it started with a nice little interchange with Ake to bide some time until space cleared up, then he played a long crossfield pass to Guedioura who IIRC was way over in the other half of the width of the pitch, it was by no times an easy pass to make against a team like West Brom who like to scrap for the ball. It was a smart decision because he (a) spotted Guedioura's run (b) picked a well-timed pass to the fastest player on the pitch, and one who was in a better position to make things happen. Similarly, I'd call his pass to Ake that forced the corner for our first goal against Liverpool a key pass.

If your argument (this is addressed to BusheyOrn) is that he hasn't been doing enough of these key passes, then you may have a point. But it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing - can our paucity of goals (5th worst in the PL) among other factors be attributed to Jurado for not contributing enough assists/key passes, or is Jurado's lack of assists largely a consequence of us not scoring many goals? Certainly there's been no shortage of goal-scoring chances "assisted by Jurado" according to the BBC live text, so again I'd say the problem is more Ighalo's form having dropped drastically during the New Year and apart from Deeney (and only sporadically at that) no one else who can be relied on at all to put the ball in the net more than once in a blue moon, if that. (And like LoyalHornet said, I wouldn't single out a game where he had possibly his worst performance of the season as an exemplar of his lack of attacking intent.)

Exactly this. If you are prepared to go back through enough phases of play, you'll probably find that he was involved in almost all of our goals in some way or another whenever he was on the pitch. Obviously if he'd provided some actual goals and assists, we wouldn't have to do this enhanced tactical analysis to show how effective he was but it's hardly his fault that he only had our 17 goal and 15 goal strikers to pass to, it's not as though they were scoring a decent amount of goals.

  31. GoingDown

As far as I'm concerned, Jurado has had an active role in all of our goals since he joined the club.

  32. Hairyfrog

He may have been played out of position on the wing, but as a professional footballer, he should know that a wingers role is to get up and down the wing and not only play back passes and square balls, but to also try and ping in the odd cross for the strikers, Ake actually did more of that and he was our left back.

If the new boss wants to give him a go that's his call, but I think he really needs to up his game if he wants as many starts as Quique gave him.
On the other hand if Walter doesn't rate him, I won't be heartbroken to see him leave, he is certainly replaceable and given a season or two will be completely forgotten.

  33. Happy bunny

Happy bunny Cheered up a bit

I remember many occasions when Jurado received the ball, passed it back to Ake who passed it inside to Capoue who passed it back to Watson, who passed it square to Nyom who passed it back to Gomes who punted it upfield to Deeney who passed it to Ig who scored. None of this would have happened without Jurado's vital assist.
