But far better than the one Wigan, Huddersfield, Hull or Stoke had.... It's almost as if 'New Manager Bounce' is largely mythical.
Perhaps. But if this is true we are beginning to get into dangerous territory here? Inter group transactions are one thing, but disguising payments to 3rd party intermediaries by inflated transactions would be another level? Although transfer fees are very difficult to prove incorrect admittedly.
Wigan got 1 point in the 7 games before Toure arrived. They got 4 points in his first two games, and have reverted to type since. Perfect example of a short new manager bounce. Huddersfield had 0.7 PPG, since the new manager it's 1.1PPG. Still crap, mind. Hull got 9 points in the 12 games before Rosenior arrived. They've got 10 points in his first 7 games and have only lost once. Stoke got 4 points from 5 games (0.8PPG) to start the season before sacking O'Neill. Alex Neil got 12 in his first 8 games (1.5PPG) before falling off again. There's definitely something in it, but usually teams tend to settle back to their level after the initial upturn in form, which imo comes as a result of: fresh ideas, renewed enthusiasm from squad players, which leads to more competition for places and higher intensity training.
isn’t it just largely reversion to mean? Team with top end wage budget and playing staff underperform to the extent they sack manager. New guy comes in and as sample size increases the team reverts to expectation?
Yep. Plenty of articles out there with the requisite analysis and numbers to prove it’s complete nonsense.
You can only have a bounce in the first place if there is somewhere to bounce from. Luton didn’t need a bounce and were over performing to the point a PL club wanted their manager (something that has only happened with one of Pozzo’s many, many managerial appointments once in a decade). Even if Edward’s results regress to that of Nathan Jones he’ll still be over performing.
Apologies would like to amend this Burnsy, he would be on roughly 25 goals by now if he started every week
He was absolutely useless on the whole today. Grayesque ball control. However, thanks for the winner, Vakoun!
Haha, fair play! I don’t see it myself - and he also missed a sitter. But I’m man enough to let you have your moment on this one!
Oh he was horrendous overall though, really poor performance. But the thing is, as reids alluded to, he's a player who gets in the right positions regularly, which means if he's given starts, he'll score, even if he does miss a sitter or two.
Terrible footballer but has still managed to get us six points with late winners against Middlesbrough and Norwich
He nearly missed. Thankfully he didn’t, but my word it was close to being up there with miss of the season.
We need another striker if we have any aspirations for promotion. Fair play to Bayo he did at least put a shift in and kept going for the goal, but he is poor. Nice to see Morris play and thought he did ok. Thought Gaspar did well in the middle. We need about 5 new players for the next game
Tbf to Bayo he's not had a look in at starting so wasn't a surprise he didn't have one of his best games shall we say. He isn't one of the first name's on the team sheet anyway so my expectations weren't particularly high. In the right place at the right time for the winner so fair enough.
I’d like to see him tied to a rocket and launched into space. But if that isn’t possible I can probably live with him scuffing the odd winner into the net against all the odds.
He's the absolute polar opposite to Davis, won't get involved in play, won't be able to hold the ball up, but will get in the right areas. Long-term I think we're better off with Davis, but does he get in that position to score?
Terrible footballer. Should firmly be in the super sub category for when we need a goal, we're f*cked if he's going to be starting for us.
As you say, transfer fees are difficult to prove entirely incorrect (unless they're obviously taking the absolute pi55), which is precisely why it seems so plausible that it's a scheme the Pozzos are partaking in.
Yeah good summary. For all Davis' good link up play today he still didn't really look like scoring again.
Davis doesn't do any of that. That is a false narrative created based on the comments of the Forest fans. I don't think I have seen one creative pass from Davis since he's come here. Bayo is far better player and will continue to prove it despite the hate from fans here.
