    Tbh it sounds horribly tedious.

  3. We had our bash last Saturday (to avoid the rush). Couldn't give a toss either way about the royals, but good to get the neighbours meeting each other. I was involved in organising. Because we did it last weekend, we weren't competing with other events - we had the mayor, a rock band, Indian dancers, and Pizza Express, Nando's, and local restaurants donated food; M&S, Body Shop, Morrisons all donated vouchers and hampers which we raffled and used proceeds for wine beer Pimms and soft drinks. About 200 came. Marvellous.

    Anyhoo, I've done my bit, so can spend this weekend ignoring/watching new Stranger Things.

    How hard is it to organise the lighting of a beacon? Matches, dry wood, petrol.... I might wander up to Chenies with my dog this evening and shout abuse at you!

    Very environmentally unfriendly. Hopefully Charles will swap the beacons for LED striplights in his time.

    Sh*t, the nearest Greene King pub is miles away, £10 to get there and back, and their IPA is excellent.

    Gawd Blimey Vicar, skimming through this thread there are some right miserable f*****s out there.
    God help us if we were a miserable republic like France....

    I for one will celebrate what our Constitutional Monarchy has brought to this country, including constancy and knowing the PM has a ‘higher authority’ they have to defer to, even if it is symbolic.
    And Liz has done a sterling job in her 70 years of service in a what is, let’s face it, a miserable job with many many downsides.

    And they are not our ‘Overlords’

    Well done and Congratulations Your Majesty.
    Unfortunately, we will, I believe, miss her more than we now realise when she’s gone.

    But this has been show to be utter cobblers with the Prorogation Omnishambles.

    I'm going to hold my own tribute to the Royal Family by jetting off to a Caribbean Island for a party with load of jailbait present hopefully there'll be a photographer present so when evidence comes to light I can get my mum to defraud UK taxpayers of millions to pay 'em off so it all goes away...

    Good luck at the airport.

    No system is perfect, but the benefits overrule the downsides...

  12. Compare our miserable subservient dirge to:

    Aux armes, citoyens
    Formez vos bataillons
    Marchons, marchons!
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons!

    Allons enfants de la Patrie
    Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
    Contre nous de la tyrannie
    L'étendard sanglant est levé
    L'étendard sanglant est levé
    Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
    Mugir ces féroces soldats?
    Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
    Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes!

    Aux armes, citoyens
    Formez vos bataillons
    Marchons, marchons!
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons!

    Warmongers, the lot of them ...
    God Save the Queen
    vs
    ‘To arms, citizens, form battalions and march. march ....’
    Much rather watch them professional Irish Grenadiers do it in a spectacle shown around the world helping to bring millions of tourists and their $¥€ to our stretched economy...

    To combat, run, Bayamesans!
    For the homeland looks proudly upon you;
    Do not fear a glorious death,
    Because to die for the homeland is to live.
    To live in chains is to live
    Mired in shame and disgrace.
    Hear the sound of the bugle:
    To arms, brave ones, run!

    Fear not the vicious Spanish,
    They are cowards like every tyrant.
    They cannot oppose the spirited Cuban;
    Their empire has forever fallen.
    Free Cuba! Spain has already died,
    Its power and pride, where did it go?
    Hear the sound of the bugle:
    To arms, brave ones, run!

    Behold our triumphant troops,
    Behold those who have fallen.
    Because they were cowards, they flee defeated;
    Because we were brave, we knew how to triumph.
    Free Cuba! we can shout
    From the cannon's terrible boom.
    Hear the sound of the bugle,
    To arms, brave ones, run!

    The notion of the Queen’s ‘service’ always cracks me up. She’s got an unbelievable gig and has pretty much done as she has pleased all her life. It’s an inversion of the reality. We serve her and preserve her wealth and land.

    Whether it works or not is another thing, but there are republics that seem at least as happy and more harmonious than here.

    But having a lovely day off, nonetheless.

    Sadly a load of heavy military helicopters have just flown over, so either the Queen has a shock lined up for us or it’s no more Mr Nice Guy GB from Putin.

    Good to see Peta members protesting on the Mall about the use of bear fur.
    It's outrageous in 2022 that fake fur isn't used.

    IIRC The skin is sourced from the Canadian bear cull, which is suposedly necessary used to control numbers to ensure a stable and healthy popuplation. It's highly regulated and produces a material which lasts longer than synthetic equivalents and when finished with, biodegrades.
    Bears are not killed specifically to provide the skin.

    More to the point, they should be discontinued because they look silly.

    I don't remember being given one, or a coin for that matter for the Jubilee. You could buy them in a commemorative case from the bank. This time there's a commemorative 5 pound coin which may just buy you a decent pint of beer.

    Clips of Luther scoring against Arsenal in the Cup are being used to promote the story.
    Why are honours still called Whatever British Empire rather than Whatever British Commonwealth? Just seems very old-fashioned and a bit daft to still be using it.

    Got no problem with anyone who wants to celebrate, I do think some people in this country have an unhealthy obsession with the royals though. I just have no interest in them whatsoever.

    While we're at it, one of many translations, but this one gets the gist:

    Оh! Land of my fathers, the land of the free,
    The home of the Telyn, so soothing to me;
    Thy noble defenders were gallant and brave,
    For thy freedom their hearts' life they gave!

    Chorus:
    Wales, Wales, my mother's sweet home is in Wales,
    Till death be pass'd my love shall last,
    My longing, my hiraeth for Wales.

    II
    Thou Eden of bards, and birthplace of song,
    The sons of thy mountains are valiant and strong;
    The voice of thy streamlets is soft to the ear,
    Thy hills and thy vallies how dear!

    Chorus

    III
    Though trampled and crush'd by oppression's foul wrong,
    The language of Cambria still lives on in song;
    The Awen survives, nor have envious tales
    Yet silenced the harp of dear Wales.

    Chorus

    The trouble with the dirge is that there is no mention of the land/country until verse 4. Any aliens listening in wouldn't know what land was being sung about.
