I think your point relies on some misplaced gratitude, that our system of monarchy has bestowed upon us a gift (though this was Parliament on its behalf)

However, if the neighbouring republic has more holidays than us surely the question is why does our system bestow so few?

I'm a staunch Republican and cannot justify the existence of the monarchy, but I'm on the village committee and so part of the group organising today's lighting of the beacon, with a small ceremony, and Sundays festivities at the Manor.

A chance to get pissed in a beautiful, historic garden? What's not to like?
