Wasn't John in the dutch team about 5 years before he signed for us? Rather than a few weeks ago, like Berghuis.

John was called up at around age 20 as a player with potential. He was only called up for two international friendlies and never capped again.

Berghuis is 23 and significantly more proven, having made 100 professional appearances prior to his call up. Even though he didn't play, he was called into the squad for competitive qualifying games rather than mere friendlies. EDIT: apparently this is wrong, they were also friendlies. The article I read was incorrect; per Berghuis himself he was called up for friendlies.

Quite a difference between the two and I don't expect Berghuis to be anything like John. Unlike John, Berghuis also seems very up for this move. That will likely make a huge difference.

 

He's not our record transfer. That's still Capoue.
