    Ed Miliband:

Thank god he's doing something useful and not providing a soundbite.

Will the army have the right training though?

As seen in NI, you throw the army in and some young soldier gets a bit trigger happy, then it'll get worse.

This really is madness. Very unsettling to watch on the news.

Get them in with a massive hose, that'll sort it out (well maybe some of it)

    Hopefully it'll rain tomorrow.

I think most people are calling for Military Logistics to help co-ordinate the police. With surveilance etc.

Rather than, like you say, young kids with guns which would only make it worse.

    Another rumour.

They wouldn't shut down the BBM services just for people talking and potentially planning these troubles. Even if the police wanted to, they wouldn't have the power/permission.

If BBM was to go down the Twitter would have to as well.

If things continue in the same vein then we might have no choice. And if one of the ****s gets hit by a stray bullet, they shouldn't be out looting and causing damage to peoples homes and businesses. Just the presence of the army on the street will scare the carp out of some of the rioters I'd imagine.

People's homes, businesses, cars and almost inevitably lives being thrown away because of mindless savagery.

Armed police, live ammo, drop a couple of dozen and see the streets clear rapidly.

Set in a 7pm curfew. Anybody on the streets after then will be shot on sight, no questions asked.

Really not necessary. They need their mums to give them a clip round the ear and tell them to get indoors.

You can't ignore it, and you know it will be snowballed into a racial issue , something that the Police and Goverment will be aware of.

Cobra will introduce a 10pm curfew tomorrow - also expect to see the army patroling the streets just to give it a presence

Police aren't doing anything today because they are in amungst them with video cameras - expect mass arrests tomorrow

A bill to use rubber bullets and water canons will be passed quite quickly.

The problem with water cannons is where do you use them? The looting and fires have started up in random places. By the time you get a hulking great water cannon across London the scum would've gone.

Agree with rubber bullets/baton rounds though.

Arrests. And then what? A slap on the wrist? A 20 quid fine? A community outreach officer that they can rape?

I really admire the policemen and women, the fire brigade, everyone. But the politically correct cuddling of wrongdoers in this country is just spiralling out of control and the roles they play are always in vein.

This chapter is going to be over very soon, but well need a zero tolerance policy in ASAP. There is no fear in doing something bad anymore.

I remember seeing someone steal something from waitrose when I worked there about 9 years ago. I was told nothing can be done about it, not even stopping to search the guy. Even at 16 I knew this country was heading for the pits.

A guy recorded loads of people looting from Curry's in Clapham Jctn and asked a looter why they're doing it. She said "I'm getting my Taxes back"

    I saw that.

He had to pretend not to be a journalist. She asked him, are you an f-ing journo, he said he lived round here, and he asked why are you doing this, are you proud, she said, yeh its fun, im getting my taxes back.

    What is wrong with people.

No, not on their own. This country operates something called 'mutual aid' when it comes to policing. Our fragmented police forces send officers to wherever they're needed. There are officers from forces 100 miles away policing the capital tonight. But the only way to truly deal with it, curfews, water cannon and CS shells, are in the handbook but need authorisation from the Home Secretary to be deployed. Hopefully COBRA will swing into action tomorrow and give the police the emergency powers needed to deal with this.

  29. nascot

12 seperate forces now in London which is about 300 officers. Somehow that doesn't seem nearly enough...

  30. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

It's nowhere near enough. Public order training (especially in this touchy feely, softly softly age) costs money and what is it police forces are struggling to find? Plus according to a mate of mine given the recent issues with the G20 etc a lot of police officers have given up their public order 'ticket', deciding it's basically not worth the effort of facing the armchair division of the hindsight army to try and justify heat of the moment actions.

They are only authorisied to use Water Cannons in Northern Ireland, not on the mainland as yet.....in fact I heard someone say earlier they'd have to get them shipped across from NI if needed.

You're correct though that logistically speaking they're all in NI at the moment. How long would it take an RAF transport plane to fly a job lot to RAF Northolt though?

I read lt week, before the riots tipped off, that Bill Bratton former chief of Police in LA and NY (or was it Boston?) is one of the names being tossed around to head the Met Police in London. He was really quite good here in LA.

Don't be surprised if it either happens or if it doesn't as a result of these riots. How is that for betting both outcomes?
