I absolutely agree with this it really is the only option. Ever since we introduced stupid laws like this or made things taboo (like slapping your children) respect is lost and when the respect is lost trouble ensues.

I'm sorry to hear that your children have lost respect for you, but are you sure it's down to you not being able to be violent with them?

I don't usually agree with you Mark, but on this one I think you're right. My parents never hit me, neither did my teachers and neither have the Police and I'm not going around trashing shops and houses. Its not that parents aren't allowed to hit their children, its that the parents don't really care. You can still discipline a child just as effectively without violence.

Thanks Scummybear, I'm sure we'd agree on a few things if we tried. :drinking:

I expect most of those referred to as "needing to be hit when they were kids", probably were hit as kids, often with a fist in the face.

I don't remember ever hearing someone say that they "wished they'd been able to hit their kid, it might have helped". It's only those looking from the outside, without any knowledge of the individual situation who seem to think it will help.

Did my teacher ever hit me? No... but you knew if you stepped out of line you would get one, usually from the Deputy Head.

Same with parents, and back then same with the Police.

KNOWING you'll get a spank if you step out of line works and did for thousands of years. These days kids know they cant be touched, so the ones that want to cause trouble do so knowing you cant touch them. Sensible balanced kids will grow in both worlds, its the ones that are not balanced that need to know where the line exists and that they'll get punished, and when the punishment is at best getting dragging into a court and then sent to Alton Towers for the day is what needs changing.

    Bring back stocks!

It's only middle class kids who try using that as a threat. Kids from the underclasses get hit week in, week out, and can't report it for fear of what will happen to them. Instead they wait until they are big enough and fight back, then leave home (usually about age 16) or get involved in gangs as they have found that violence means you have control.

I don't have kids so there is no need to be sorry. But I was disciplined well as a child and as a result I am not one of the looters. It is a shame my generation (early 20's) will be stigmatised with the looter's and the rioter's by the media.

    Bad grammar encourages bad behaviour!

It may well be unfair to stigmatise your generation for others' rioting, but that does not excuse the poor use of the apostrophe.

So the argument that "But I was disciplined well as a child and as a result I am not one of the looters" means that anyone who is a looter was not disciplined as a child?

Actually looking at some of the stuff this morning, I must admit I was probably wrong about a couple of bits..... Alot of those in court yesterday and today appear to be white middle-class kids, and also people with jobs or studying. I don't know what percentages this breaks down to yet, but it seems to argue against the stereotypes the media portrayed over the last few days.

I think we can agree there are a lot of grey areas with both our view points. Thats the problem with us humans, we are a bloody diverse bunch.

I was tempted to come back on the last half of the final sentence as being exactly the point I was making. :angel3:

I'm proud of you being able to rise above that!

I'm going to have to call it a day on this debate, as my boss has been having a go about the amount of time I'm spending on this site, and how it doesn't look work related.

    Boo Hiss.......

By a lot of those in court you mean the ones the news channel you were watching chose to show you of course.

I know what you mean and yes I am sure most were of a certain race but be foolish to think there weren't any rioters/looters of the other.

Probably find one set did the rioting and then others joined in the the aftermarth.

It looks like Cameron is hiring Bill Bratton's consulting firm Kroll to provide advice on changing law enforcement in England.

I think it is scaring some of the rank and file, but if he does his job right and the English government can understand it and make it work, the Met Cops jobs will be a lot easier. It would be a five year project type of thing, just based on the tack he took in LA with Community Policing to prevent gang violence.

Note that his approach has been one of prevention and then strict enforcement in the past which I don't see him deviating from for England.

Holy cr*p! I go away for one whole week with no internet access, no phone signal, no TV and no papers, and look what happens?

I'm not going away again, it's too dangerous.

Have there been any good TV programs regarding the riots that I can watch on catchup? Really don't want to do this via youtube.

Cheers. Watched a few newsnights last night but it was so watered down as to be laughable. I suspect panorama to be the same.

Yes, even the 'facts' reported by the IPCC and not media speculation.

Responding to inquiries from the Guardian, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said in a statement: "It seems possible that we may have verbally led journalists to believe that shots were exchanged".

Well, in hindsight, if they did mislead the media, then we are all gonna look foolish for criticising the looters and rioters, when we really should have been joining them.

  25. afanof

No, because the shooting and the looting only have a tenuous connection, much like football and hooliganism in the way that hooligans use football matches as an opportunity to behave badly.
