I am no fan of the monarchy by a long chalk. I would like it scrapped. And the Duke did make some rather to say the least off colour comments during his life. Things which happily most people would take umbrage with now to a very great degree.

With his passing there is one less person with a living memory of the RN Mediterranean Fleet in line and close to the like of Admiral Cunningham the admiral at Matapan and other close calls on convoy duties in both basins of that sea. You see I do have a passion for naval history as well. In that regard he genuinely did serve the nation. As did many others who have gone into that good night with far less appreciation. But having been the consort of the Queen that is predictable.

Liked for the Ultravox references; recently downloaded The Collection onto my Apple Music and subsequently had a wonderful car journey blasting it out and taking a trip down memory lane.

  10. He didn't do any more than millions of our grand parents generations, but he didn't do any less either. Like them all he fought the Nazis, not the pretend ones kids of today like to demonstrate against but the real ones, the ones who killed untold millions and tried to wipe Jews, Russians, Poles etc off the face of the planet. Every one of that generation deserves our respect. Perhaps people should think about that.

Not sure why you had to bring the "kids" (anyone under 35?) of today into it.

I imagine in the 1930s you would have called the Nazis who stormed the Reichstag pretend evil Germans, not like the real evil facsists of 1914 the kids of today don't remember.

They were just a side fringe of laughable extremists who hadn't killed anyone yet.

Anyway, shame for the queen and the family. But the man was not afraid of a controversial comment so I don't think there need ato be any outalrage over jokes.

I was living in Vilnius at the time and on Saturday afternoon I had treated myself to an AIWA midi-system (remote control and 6 CD changer!) and I managed to get it set-up for the 16h00 (local time, GMT+2) BBC WS afternoon sport show (rebroadcast on 95.5 FM). When it switched to Sekcja polska BBC at 19h00 I pissed about with the clock and timer settings it to play song 3 of disc one (Diesel Power on Fat of the Land) as my wife always said that was the ultimate wake-up song at 08h00. Unfortunately what I did do was set it to go off at 03h00 just in time for the 1AM news with the immortal headline of (the entire report actually) "We have received unconfirmed reports of a major incident please stay tuned for further details in a special programme in 15 minutes time at 01h15" followed by Mahler's 'dourest' hits. We stayed in bed listening to the entire story unfold till midday...

It's completely misjudged. I'm sure that there are 80 odd year old policies on the Beeb's policy docket that need to be updated.

I'm not putting up with a week of this when Queenie dies

I didn’t know the bloke, but quite a bit of experience has certainly been lost there. I admire his pioneering work on environmentalism, and creating a platform for youngsters to get out into nature and learn new skills and independence.

But if he came into this pub, spouting outdated racial stereotypes and telling dad jokes and anecdotes about when he met Obama, I’d say

    ‘Oi, Duke, NO!

I admire your support of the queen for 73 years and your part in shaping a new culture in the UK, but you can get your racist, Greek, benefit scrounging arse back down the job centre. Huff.’

...Seriously though the bloke made some gaffs and had some questionable opinions but did a lot of good. RIP

Short version: met a Lithuanian girl while I was working on a mind-numbing project in Newcastle. Went to stay with her for Xmas in Vilnius in 1994 and stayed 'till 2003 working in TEFL (ESL) and as a researcher at this place.

I remember my post 'A' level Greek Island hopping holiday with three mates in 1987 (ISTR a month's ferry pass was £50?). We were staying in a very 'cool' hostel/pension in Corfu that had a self-appointed US 'events organiser'. She was very upset when her planned day trip to visit 'Mon Repos' drummed up zero interest amongst the Brit/Colonial visitors - which greatly amused the Greek staff...

The TV coverage of this is quite baffling, on BBC news they’ve just interviewed a reporter live in Sydney in front of the opera house to get the mood of Australian’s over his death, now they’re doing the same for a reporter in India. I know they’re commonwealth countries, but would anyone expect any of them to give a ****? Now they’re live in Kenya.

I suspect most of these footballers will have no idea who he was really to an extent.

And used to having a clap rather than silence.

Watched a program earlier on the BBC and the Prince did seem to have quire a chaotic childhood in relative terms moving from country and country with so many different strands of his family.

Must have just been pleased to find someone who he could be with for the rest of his life.

Didn’t realise how soon after they married the Queen became Queen.
