Liking your grandparents is fine, but when one of them shuffles off, with all due respect, don't postpone Pointless.

That was one of their favourite programmes, so ironically cancelling it would have actually been a sign of disrespect. I made sure the BBC knew that when the day came a few years back. Lucky their DG at the time listened to me otherwise there would have been riots I suspect.

  4. You would have thought the Beeb would have spread its bets, and used BBC2 for the Philip stuff and BBC1 for all the usual ****.

Ah one of my only memories of my grandad from before he died was him telling me how he’d sniped a camel for a laugh (with a bloke riding it) while he was a para in the 50’s. I’m guessing something to do with the Suez Canal.

It would. Although the concept feels awfully dated in an era of the well-established 24 hour news cycle and the internet. A large chunk of the population simply aren’t bound to so-called linear television. Hence why I’d bet yesterday and the coming days are a bit of a test for the authorities to work out wider attitudes to this sort of thing ahead of the big event.

I think the angle that will attract most criticism will be around mental health and wellbeing. I genuinely think people expect to have an ability to escape events these days. There’s enough death and gloom in the world as it is, especially in the midst of a global pandemic. Having every channel and radio station playing the same thing feels almost dystopian.

To be clear though, although I see myself as having a pretty modern mindset and not beholden to royalty, I also respect what the Queen has done. I’ll be sure to bung a fiver in if someone sets up a GoFundMe to cover her funeral costs or make sure her kids are looked after.

    I agree 100% with this.

I really can’t see why (for example) it had to occupy all BBC channels. Keep rolling coverage on one if necessary, but something else elsewhere. Change the schedule if needs be - to be more “respectful”. But don’t assume that every single viewer is only concerned with one issue, especially given what many have had to go through much more directly in their lives during the past year.

As it is, Mrs Keighley and I watched an old Seinfeld and an old Would I Lie to You. Which, tbh, we probably would have done anyway (although I was denied my usual Friday Gardeners World fix).

Being a grumpy old man, I not only registered my complaint on the link you posted yesterday, but also sent in a feedback message, broadly on the lines of the above. Will be interesting to see if I get a reply.

Agree. The BBC could have devoted its News Channel and BBC 1 to its coverage and shifted its scheduled BBC 1 programmes to BBC 2. That would generally appease those who wanted to spend all night watching stuff about Prince Philip (don’t know anyone in this category, mind) and those who didn’t. I was peeved I couldn’t watch the final of Masterchef after our match.
I’m meeting my friend who works for the BBC on Tuesday - I’ll be interested to hear what the take is there and whether the journalists think it was overkill by the powers that be.

Likewise. I had stopped watching BB by the time she was on, but knew of her mainly because of her “Who is she?” comments that then became a meme. But I have been way more affected by news of her death at 38 than I was by the death of a 99 year old particularly since, as the parent of two teenagers, the thought of them developing an eating disorder is one of the things you fear most. Several of my friends have gone through it with their kids although all, touch wood, have successfully come through the other side.

  17. I don’t watch BBC at all, I stream what I want to watch when I want to watch it. I thought everybody did that these days? Didn’t think I’d ever be trend setting and cutting edge!

Who on earth watches terrestrial tv when it is broadcasted these days (other than sports)? It’s all on demand to watch whenever you want.

Complaining that live daytime terrestrial TV has been postponed is about as boomer as it gets.

I’m not interested in watching royal news montages on repeat, but I’m just as likely to want to watch repeats of montages of Philip’s life than I am to watch the latest episode of Flog It (or whatever it’s called) live.

Can you imagine how silly those complaining will feel when they finally discover Netflix?

A bit patronising this. Plenty of people - young and old - still choose to watch some programmes on terrestrial tv when they’re scheduled. For example, the final of “The Circle” was broadcast on Friday on Channel 5 - I would guess that the vast majority of people tuning in to this were not “boomers” and would have been equally annoyed had it been pulled from the schedules.

I am all for showing Prince Phillip the respect that someone who has just passed deserves, but the media coverage has been way OTT in my opinion.

I stream most shows that I watch, but Bargain Hunt at lunchtime, pointless at dinner and Totp 2 on BBC4 whilst I'm drinking are all Friday fixtures, ruined by the death of the Greek/Dane.

We never watch anything live, no. Well, very very rarely.

I can’t speak for others, but I didn’t complain because it affected me personally (that’s a very individualistic view of why people complain, frankly). I complained because I disagree with the principle that it was necessary to shift every single programme on BBC to accommodate the expected death of Phillip, especially given people’s need for some light relief in what has been a very difficult time. I think this is a serious misjudgment of the public mood and is outdated and, since I pay the licence fee like everyone else, I am entitled to provide feedback.

None of that stops you from watching royal montages on repeat if you want. It’s about giving people a choice. Don’t understand what is “boomer” about that.

Surely a lot of people still just flick the TV on as a bit of sort of half background entertainment? I’m sure everyone has Netflix and streams stuff, but not everyone just sits down in front of the telly to specifically watch something like a film or a documentary. Quite often I don’t want to invest my concentration or time on watching something specific, and equally don’t want to spend ages finding it. I just want to put normal TV on and find something vaguely entertaining.

Must admit it was very strange to have basically the same thing on BBC One and Two plus the IPlayer.

There is only so much that can be said about a guy of 99 passing away which would have been planned long before in the form of tribute programs.

Now surely that is a waste of money and time in anyone’s books.

As is complaining unfortunately as they’ll just do as they please whilst paying lip service to the complaints I suspect.

Or the radio. My Saturday morning routine of having it on the background was wiped out by their need to play mushy love or sad songs, interrupted only by reading the occasional text from someone saying how fitting it was. And it was across every BBC non-talk radio channel. Weird.

  29. Keighley

Yes, probably, but it does no harm to send a signal. We do all pay for the BBC after all. And, as UEA says, you would hope they are picking up some feedback for the day when the Queen goes.

If no feedback is given, you can pretty much guarantee that nothing will change.

Fair point but probably be the same for the Queen.

Now maybe if a "lesser" Royal dies they might take the comments on board and learn their lesson as people like to say.

I did read the BBC got a lot of stick for not having enough coverage of the Queen Mother dying so guess they have probably gone full circle.

No, it'll be even more over the top. I wouldn't be surprised if we had a lockdown of sorts during the period of national mourning. Non-essential shops, pubs and entertainment venues shut, sporting fixtures cancelled etc.

I thought the message might have come home after the fuss when Mandela died and the alleged comedy Mrs Brown’s Boys was taken off air. While anyone complaining about such a thing is a bit suspect politically and certainly comedically challenged, there is no need to interrupt programming for anyone but the Queen or the PM dying when we have 24 hour news and all sorts of alerts.

The Queen dying will be important of course because she is the Monarch and it will make many people sad. The PM will be important because he is the Head of the Government and it will make very many people happy.
