As Chancellor of Cambridge University, he visited the newly opened Biochemistry Department building in the late 90s. My boss, who was the head of department at the time, had to help show him round. There was a poster about Aids in Africa, and he made a comment about "the good thing about AIDS is that it keeps the black population of Africa down". My boss has a black African wife and unfortunately had to bite his lip. A really odious individual. Hopefully he is now on his way to being a chief guest in the Palace of Satan.

that would be one of the “witty quips and gaffes” that one tabloid described today why he was so loved

    Goodbye Prince Phillip,
Though I never knew you at all, you had the grace to hold on, to the age of 99.

In times like these, the ignore button is your best friend.

Also, using capital letters willy nilly really doesn't do you any favours here.

How about you start your own memorial thread for Prince Philip?

I expect a Fourth bridge moment, but we won’t get a public holiday on the date of his funeral. The last state funeral was 1965 for Churchill. I expect it will be a private event at Windsor Castle. Partly because of Covid, but partly it would have been his preference.

My daughter got her gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Probably the most important experience of secondary school. It’s creation and promotion I think demonstrates a very positive side of the man.

Whatever our individual feelings or thoughts. He has only just died. Perhaps we could all reflect that we might want to show a little decorum for a while at least. A little kindness makes the world a better place.

RIP, a long life, an interesting life. A different generation.

The response from the press/BBC etc. is a bit much though no? Pausing all programming all day for it. This country is weird.

Not so weird historically, anyone remember 2002 when the Queen Mother checked out, or 1997 when Diana died? Wall to wall coverage I remember it well. in 97' I remember Channel 5 was the first channel to revert back to normal programming, but only after a few hours. In fact as we had less media outlets then, it was probably worse.

It is probably weird in many peoples eyes if they have not seen something like this before, also media coverage has changed dramatically since even 2002 so there are so many more avenues you'll see this news.

My jobs been paused for today. Some of us thought it was a joke some were pleased because it had effected them deeply. I dont agree with the massive reaction (for a start how long ago did the BBC prepare their montages?) But I absolutely disagree with the distasteful messages people feel the need to share. Very much a case of if you have nothing nice to say, shut the hell up.

I find it strange just purely because (and I mean no disrespect) no one really cares do they? I'm sad that someone has died, but beyond hearing it on the news i'd rather just carry on going about my day. Maybe for the older generations (i'm in my twenties) it's more relevant?

Only BBC1/2 ITV1. C5, and the news channels. All the other channels are pedalling out all their usual tat. It's well known he despised horse racing, so perhaps they should cancel the Grand National as a mark of respect, or at least, have a race named after him. They could then shoot all the horses afterwards, as he did enjoy blasting members of the animal kingdom.

After a pretty **** childhood, he fought the Nazis for Britain in WWII, then spent his life doing boring mundane, monotonous tasks, losing his privacy and being completely overlooked/ subservient to his wife, to (generally) improve our standing in the world.

    RIP

Diana was somewhat different though, given the circumstances. And she certainly had an appeal to younger generations which Philip really didn't. I remember switching on the radio (still listened to Radio 1 in those days!) and being baffled why they were playing a sort of light military music.

Any chance of the match at Lords being called off @StuBoy? Oh dear...

Yep, BBC1 & 2 and ITV1 have continuous coverage until after midnight.
It does at least solve the issue of how to watch the game whilst juggling all the stuff already programmed onto the planner. First time the issue’s cropped up as I’ve not really bothered much after the first few Ivic borefests, until we started trying to play football again.

Shame he didn’t get to 100 and receive the telegram from his wife.

Feel sad for the Royals - he clearly lead a long and eventful life!

Whatever he chose to do in his personal life was his choice. I neither liked or disliked him, but for today at least he has my blessings for a peaceful sleep.
