It's still a possibility, if he can't get into a title-winning side, what chance does he have of establishing himself in a team going for an even bigger prize and the greatest of all in club football (not that I think Leicester stand a chance, but nothing wrong with a bit of ambition eh)?

This guy's never even won a European trophy. I thought we were above that now.

  4. Don't think people are saying they are like for like but some articles have described him as defensively minded, slow to change a winning team, and tends to have player favourites who he will pick regardless. All of which could describe Quique.

If you look back through the Mazzarri threads you will find links, quotes and discussions. Some have pointed out that it would take only a few tweaks to turn Quique's philosophy into something more entertaining, inclusive and positive.

A few fans who supported Quique staying have been rightly asking us that wanted him to go 'why make the change if they are so similar'. Few or none are writing him off before he has actually taken charge.

I'm use to being hated as a Watford fan, but my word, I feel like we are Man Utd of the Ferguson era on Twitter. Everyone hates us, it's like we're the big club that keeps winning all the titles and people are jealous. I can't believe the amount of drivel I have seen on social media today from opposition fans, all wishing us the worst and hope we get relegated. All because QSF and the club decided to opt for the break clause which he wanted put in. People are even calling us tinpot, how dare they.

Based on this I really hope Mazzarri works out and we do a Leicester and win the league.

Surely with regards to contract length, as we trade up in the quality of manager we are trying to bring in the contracts will naturally have to get longer like this, hence the reason it was three years? The better managers aren't going to be happy with 1-2 year deals and will be able to call the shots more than people like Joka and QSF. I know QSF had some pedigree but he's also spent time in the UAE and not done that well so would've probably struggled to walk into a top job at that point.

I'd be surprised if we weren't at least looking at him.

How good is his English? Command of the language has to be good, or else his ideas will not be passed on to all players.
How flexible is he? He seems to be stubborn and inflexible. Stuck with a 3-5-2 formation that I'm not convinced is the way to go in the Premier League.
How much does he know of the Premier League? It's a totally different beast to anywhere he's managed before.

All could easily be answered and he could be a fantastic appointment, but these are my reservations at this point in time.

Plus, I never really like to hear someone has taken 18 months off just because he was on a good wedge. Just like RDM. It indicates that money is more important than career, which is not a trait I particularly admire.

  11. Lets get real, for 3.5 mill Euros a year who wouldn't sit at home running down a contract?

So would you turn down over 3m euro a year ? Seems he has spent over a year in England to improve language skills and to build up knowledge of the English game, that suggests dedication and thoroughness to me
Knowledge of game a fallacy, didn't do Quique any harm and is anyone suggesting Guardiola is no good because he hasn't managed in England no of course not

Lets not write off the new guy off too early eh

We'll concede too many goals with 3-5-2 in this league.
he will change it soon enough.

I don't think that's fair at all. He was only expressing reservations about the possibility of English language skills being, well, not good enough.

To be honest with you, I don't give a flying **** that Mazzarri has spent the past year in the UK learning English. There are plenty of people who live in a foreign country in an attempt to pick up the language, but for whatever reason are unsuccessful. What I care about is if he is actually able to speak the language to a decent level.

Pozzo in the past said that he will never again hire another manager that doesn't speak decent English, so I think we can safely assume that Mazzarri's English is good enough for communication not to be a real issue.

Issue is whether we'll recruit for a 3-5-2 and find our squad lacking if we have to change to a different formation. Wouldn't be the first time in recent years we'd have had that problem!

I think people are entitled to express reservations over any new appointment because it's always a step into the unknown. It's always a gamble. Will he fit? Etc.

    My thoughts are as such..

The Pozzos ARENT stupid people, gambling with the future of the club. They know Mazzarri well, and know what they are getting. They've seen at first-hand his work, and so far he's improved just about every club he's been at.

Guardiola himself took a sabbatical. If Mazzarri spent his lying on a sunlounger that's one thing, but seems be spent his learning more about English football. Anyway, living in Italy you can watch every PL match live. It's wrong to think an incoming foreign coach will know nothing about our league simply because they've not managed here before. And you could almost argue that QSF was on a sabbatical before joining us as the UAE jobs were rather left field and out of the footballing mainstream! Mazzarri certainly won't be tired..in fact he will be raring to go!!

Re his English..I'm led to believe it's better than, eg, Poch's was when he arrived in this country and better than Conte's is right now.

Is he stubborn? Could be. Or could be he's a coach who knows his mind and sticks to his beliefs.

Personally, my only reservation is his character which I think will rub people up the wrong way. I don't think people will warm to him. But it's all about results. And if he can achieve with us what he achieved in Naples, I really don't care about anything else!!

Not speaking English very well has hardly prevented dozens of ex players becoming pundits!

I write this as I listen to Quinny once again mangling the English language.

I always loved the irony of listening to both he and Ginola on alternate days on Talk Sport and hearing one of them speak English faultlessly, and it wasnt our ex-player!!

By the way, on that note speedy recovery to DG. Sounds really horrific what happened to him.

Disliked purely for the use of Quinny. Had you said fat pig (or even Not So Thin) we still would have known who you meant and you would have got a Like into the bargain.

Talking of Quinny, has anyone got a (genuine) photo of him in a Watford shirt? He surely can't really be as fat as I remember.

I've seen plenty of photos of him in a Newcastle shirt - but they're misleading since stripes are well known to be slimming.

I'm sure my day will be able to cope with not getting a like from somebody like you. Or a typical pointless reply from Moog. If I wait long enough I'm sure one of our more sensible posters may pop up for a decent bit of debate.

Agreed, but dismayed to see WM likely to bring a host of Italians probably with no more than functional English. Saw that with Beppe: in training no one but Abdi, Battochio and Angella had anything more than a vague idea of what the staff wanted them to do.
