What’s the point of promotion if everyone pines for the league We aspire to escape from?

[QUOTE="a19tgg, post: 2871205, member: 6869"I’d say Norwich are going to be by far our toughest rivals.[/QUOTE]

Yet we beat them twice in our worst season in twenty years.

I think there are lots of teams we will struggle against next season if we fail to get in a coach who can galvanise the players and has the tactical ability to consistently win games. Play offs with a chance to go up is not going to be easy, let alone automatic promotion.

Remember how the great performances under Zola evaporated with humiliations against Yeovil and Huddersfield (under Sannino). You saw then the early DNA of our squads suspect mentality.

Not sure Norwich and Bournemouth are guaranteed play off (or better) either.

On the other hand lots of the Championship clubs look potentially weak. Derby, Forest, Birmingham, Wednesday, Huddersfield Middlesbrough and Stoke all need a stellar improvement to go for automatic promotion.

  4. Surely if everyone pines for the championship, then the object is to be distinctly average neither progressing or dropping, finishing exactly mid table every year?

The reason I say Norwich will likely be our biggest rivals, is that relative to us (and Bournemouth) I’d say they won’t lose much of their squad, so like for like they could be stronger. We’re stronger now, but may we’ll not be once the dust settles. As for the rest of the championship, for the two years we’ve got parachute money Covid will place them all at a big disadvantage. That doesn’t bring with it any guarantees of course but I don’t see why next season wouldn’t be easier for us than if we’d been relegated in any prior season.

One thing not been mentioned is the ridiculous amount of teams that may be sitting on points deductions next season. Sheff Wed, Brum, Derby, Wigan if they appeal and win.

As a Championship squad they were good. And yes we got smashed but that squad played with a damn sight more heart and commitment than our recent bunch of spineless jobsworths.

I think it is a good point that the three relegated sides this year may indeed find the Championship easier than relegated sides from previous years. Bouncing back is not easy to achieve though.

Maybe, but the current squad is not the squad built in the a Championship and got promoted. The comparison should be between the squads that won promotion.

Yep could be useful, Wigan in particular you feel natural justice should allow them to win their appeal. Not sure that’s going to get much support in Barnsley.

We beat them twice thanks in no small part to players who almost certainly won't be here next season, whereas I think Norwich have a good starting point for a promotion push next season. They'll lose players, like we all will, but they don't have nearly the same amount of dead wood that we do, nor the ahem, interference from the board

I doubt much will change on that front, they'll protect the 'big' clubs, but **** the small clubs from rugby league towns...
Mind you, that would make things harder for the scum

Haven’t read the entire threat so forgive me if this has been mentioned

    1) Tuesday night games
    2) small chance of youth coming through (whats happened to Cassidy?)
    3) there isn’t 6 games a season where it’s a free hit so to speak
    4) no Burnley
    5) a proper derby back. I have the unfortunate pleasure of living in central beds so most of my mates are fans of them, yes there’s a strong chance I’ll have a very unpleasant few weeks in the build up and aftermath of our games against them but better than creating a rivalry against palace, Everton etc.
    6) players that should in theory be proud to wear the shirt and put 100% effort in. With the motivation of reaching the ‘promised land of the premiership’ we should see a lot more dedication to the cause.

This season has been an utter shambles from start to finish, just want it over and done with, pray that we get rid of all the deadwood (fair whack of it yes), build a team around Hughes, move deeney on and start again. When it’s safe to be back in the stands I’ll still be there, whether it’s seeing us lose to Wycombe or being mullered by city again, we crack on.

Well he’s a championship player who has scored in that league before. What are you looking for.....a £50m striker to come in??

Even a £2m striker would make more of an impact than Gray. He has been next to useless in peformances and has most definitely contributed to the toxic atmosphere and player power that we have going on behind the scenes. Get that **** out of my club

I think this is a bit OTT, he had his party, sure (which seemed to be more a kick about in his back garden) which was will advised. But I’m not sure what evidence there is to suggested ‘he definitely contributed to the toxic atmosphere and player power’? Villa hero Jack Grealish went to a mates house at the peak of lockdown, got pissed then crashed into a parked car. Footballers do stupid things that’s for sure, but I don’t know what evidence there is that he’s a bad apple. Player power gets Troy in the team every week, not sure what it does for AG.

What exactly is your point here? That the Championship squad wasn't good enough for the Premier League? Skyla didn't say it was.

Also you forget that a potential 15 goals disappeared when King got injured. Who knows whether that team might have scraped through to safety with him firing.

And that squad certainly didn't lose 8-0 to anyone that season. I also didn't feel embarrassed supporting them. Which is infinitely better than the current dross.

That’s the difficulty. We’re nowhere near a big enough club to just remain competitive in the championship year after year. What has happened to us in the PL will inevitably happen to us in the championship as it has throughout our history, some years we’ll get it wrong and drop out of it as well, and every so often we’ll flirt with promotion. With our current owners we’re no good to them in the championship but they won’t want to sell us as a championship club either.

I'm sorry, but I don't get this. We've only been lower than the Championship for 2 seasons in the last 42 years. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are suggesting that isn't (at the least) our true level then you are mistaken.

Just the mood of the fans about the club I guess ?

We might be like WBA, Fulham and Cardiff or struggle like Stoke and Huddersfield.

I like to think we wouldn't go straight again though!

    Thanks to Marcel Desailly !

    Even Alec Chamberlain got injured.

Shame Heidar Helguson wasn't brought earlier and Wooter didn't really get going.

BTW talking about 2 different squads here!

1999-2000 was a bit like Norwich now and 2006-7 we were inexperienced both in players and management.

Still least we got more than 11 points ( Derby !)

The key is if we go down not to blow even more money - don't think we need to worry about that .
