I noticed Man City signed Douglas Luiz from Vasco. Would he be able to get a work permit that easily?

He is apparently being 'immediately loaned out' to Girona in Spain so I think we can take it the answer is nope.

Spurs and Foyth will be a better example of this - yes he is Argentine but not nearly as prominent as Penaranda - Spurs want him now not in 2 years - so lets watch the double standards getting applied

It's slightly different to gauge other clubs' activities in this matter when they are getting players from countries in the top 50 in the FIFA rankings, that's one of the things counting against Peñaranda.

  11. miserableoldgit

Sure - but top 50 is just one criteria

  12. Otter

    Otter Gambling industry insider

But an important criterion, you cannot compare a transfer with a top-50 ranking national to a non top-50 national.

Sorry Otter - but you clearly don't understand the permit issue very well - Foyth and Penaranda are in the same bucket and the fact that Argentina are top 10 and Venezuela 69 is irrelevant. Foyth has not played for the national team as far as i know - certainly not 30% of the last 2 years games - so then they go on the appeal points system and that takes games played / transfer fee paid etc into account. If all that fails then appearances in Cup Libatadores / Champions league and outstanding talent come into play

Foyth fails on all counts as far as i can see and whilst so does Penaranda, in my view he is much closer to the letter of the rules and only a perverse interpretation would rank him lower than Foyth

In effect if you haven't played for national team it does not matter where you are from - if Venezuela made top 50 by some miracle Penaranda still fails for at least 2 years as he has not played 75% of the games which from memory is the criteria for clubs ranked 40-50

I don't really understand all the convuluted rules around Work Permits - but if a player doesn't meet the criteria, isn't one of the main grounds for appeal, that the player can be classed as having a high chance of making it big in the game? In which case, Penaranda has had a good recent tournament but I would argue sadly that his lack of club football last year might lead authorities to think perhaps he wouldn't be the future superstar we are claiming him to be.

Yes, it may appear to be weighted in the bigger clubs favour. But that is sadly because a player breaking through at those clubs stands a bigger chance of making it big in the game if the get in the team. Hence why it would be much more likely this Argentine defender will get a work permit to play for Spurs.

We can't really claim massive double standards, as Everton signed Nigerian Henry Onyeroku this summer from Eupen in Belgium - he was top scorer in the top Belgian division last season at 19y/o - that shows promise to me. But even he has been shipped off to Anderlecht as he doesn't yet meet requirements.

Well - we will see - clearly Everton are hoping he gets Belgian citizenship and then qualifies through EU (at least until Farage and co close that one)

The Criteria are not that complex - top 50 or not and number of appearances followed by appeal criteria as i stated

I agree with you on double standards - i suspect there aren't any - some people on here seem to think that the world hates us and our owners and that everyone conspires against us - i think that that is bollox and that the way Spurs are treated will show that. It is just a tiny bit odd that they are doing the deal subject to permit - seems to me cut and dried - he should not get one - the fact that they are making the deal conditional implies that they are hopeful that they will get one - can't see it myself

I still think there are double-standards at work in this arena and the Foyth case will be an interesting one. I say this on the day the second highest Fifa official and Spanish Football President's home has been raided. To deny that the rules and their application do not favour some countries, leagues or clubs is really an untenable position. But from a more partisan perspective if Foyth gets the permit this might put more pressure on Kevin Wimmer to go elsewhere. I reckon he would be a viable target at say 8 million pounds. Levy would make s reasonable profit and an Austrian CB pairing of Wimmer and Prodl could be pretty good. Sometimes one can't be too much of a pragmatist when whatever we argue about has zero impact on the status quo regarding the niceties of work permits for footbsllers. COYHS

Really annoying that we didn't just leave him at Granada for another year. Daft decision that one.

Levy and Co have made it very clear that they want £20mil for Wimmer, as has been reported, so we don't stand a chance of getting him for £8mil. We might get him for £15mil on the final day of the window of no-one has offered anything more. Even then, I'm sure he will have more attractive clubs than us, even though I would love him to join us.

There are limits to how even Levy can work the market. Because Spurs don't loan players in the same way Chelski do, fringe guys get little exposure or development. Levy may ask for 20 million but he won't get it. Arsenal are struggling to get a similar amount for Callum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs and they have much more EPL experience than Wimmer, who has hardly played. I know Levy squeezed an unbelievable sum out of Man City for Walker but he is currently a 'hot' player and City are stupid. I don't elevate Levy to god-like business status as in Vincent Jannsen he made one of the worst purchases in recent seasons. Just think a solid bid for Wimmer where Levy has made 100 per cent profit for zero effort might tempt them. Because of the stadium rebuild finance plan Spurs need to sell before re-investing and this could be their model for several years. COYHS

Whilst I see the working out, I just don't see where this idea that we can bully Spurs into selling him for a low fee comes from. When injuries allowed, Wimmer came into the team last season at Spurs and didn't look out of place. A good friend of mine who is a season ticket holder speaks very highly of him. Wimmer wants more chances to play which he may get given they will likely rotate this season given CL involvement etc. He may not. But this transfer talk comes from him or his agent, not from a place of Spurs wanting to sell. The price for Wimmer will be high and they will want a fee that they reasonably think they could get a 'like for like 'replacement for - that isn't £8m. Put simply, every player has a price but for many reasons, Spurs will be reluctant to sell for anything below £15m - £20m in today's market. Just because Gino has got Hughes and Chalobah at knockdown prices, that doesn't mean every club will do that.

Edit: My same Spurs supporting friend also rates Jansson and always states how well he has played without getting any luck I. Front of goal. At a team where he gets more time, he'll score goals and is far from a terrible purchase. In fact he's someone I'd welcome in Watford colours very happily.

Anyone who thinks we can bully Spurs is a fool, they just got 50m for Kyle Walker ffs. KYLE WALKER. Levy is almost as good as Gino.

Most of the Walker money is already ring fenced for re-building the stadium. Bit like Arsenal the Spuds face several years of Transfer austerity. They better win the title this season before they have to sell Kane and Ali.

Once again, I see you're methodology for saying that. But it's not true. Spurs are run sensibly but never forget they have Joe Lewis as owner who is a multi-billionaire. Kane and Alli would leave for wages and/or prestige like Madrid etc - not because Spurs are hard up. Walker was sold because they have Trippier who is better and they'd be mad to turn down £50m. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with being ring-fenced for the stadium.

You'd be surprised, I'm pretty sure over the last 6 or so seasons Spurs have broken even in terms of net spend on transfers, which leaves a LOT of money to be used where needed. They have never really splashed the cash (apart from buying when a key player has left, but it's always less than they left for) and have great marketing + revenue.

Arsenal built the Emirates 13 years ago for £400m (+130m redeveloping the old one into flats etc - but we'll ignore for as no details of Tottenham's stadium have been revealed yet). Whilst the WHL redevelopment will cost double that at almost £800m - the PL TV deal back in 2004 was only just over £1B, compared to the £3B+ that it'll be this season and however much it'll be after the next renegotiation due in 2019. Not to mention I'd imagine Spurs to have another good season and most likely a decent run in the CL as well. They'll be just fine. Levy is even making money off the cranes (https://www.thickaccent.com/2017/01...-selling-cranes-building-the-new-whl-stadium/) being used in the redevelopment!

Plus they have a season ticket waiting list of 58,000 so taking the capacity up by 25,000 of which say 20,000 are new season ticket holders should generate at an average say £800 a ticket some £20m pa alone (without merchandise/hospitality spend) in new profits to service the loan

Not normally in the know but I do have a relative in a fairly senior position at Spuds. They will definitely be looking at a restricted budget during the stadium development. She also said that they are concerned about filling Wembley so ticket prices could be reduced and there will be generous away allocation. The upper level may even be left empty.

Spurs loan outs loads of players. About 30 over the past 2 seasons.
