Is Marco Silva all that?

You may well be right, but if you're looking at English clubs I think it's unlikely that Silva would make the jump from Watford straight to a Chelsea or Arsenal or whoever, he would probably need a step between those two.

Everton used to be a big club, we're still a "relatively" big club and we would probably be seen by a lot of people as the biggest club outside the current accepted top six. If the current hierarchy of football stays as it is (Chelsea and Man City bought their way into that top six and Spurs did it through clever management at all levels, so Everton breaking into that group with Moshiri's money isn't totally out of the question at some point if they get their act together), he probably sees Everton as a good step for him to get to that elite level.

As far as Dyche is concerned, I think you're right. He's doing a great job at Burnley, but Everton (and plenty of other established Premier League sides) fans' wouldn't tolerate that kind of football unless it was winning trophies. Without any evidence that he could play a different brand of football and still be successful, nobody seems willing to take a gamble on him.

re: Dyche, if he was mediterranean, had a nice tan, a fancy coat and a deep sexy voice you'd be crying out for him to join Everton. And that's a fact.

    Personally, no. Absolutely not.

Silva appeals because he's getting results whilst playing an entertaining brand of football. If Eddie Howe was producing consistently better results, for example, he should be in the frame as his brand of football is also entertaining.

Everton fans wouldn't accept more dour football like we've had under Koeman.

I can't speak for everyone (there are some Everton fans who see Dyche as a perfectly acceptable option), but Dyche smacks of Moyes to me as far as what we could expect to see on the pitch and whilst I'm sure results would be fine, what we're ideally looking for is something between a Moyes and a Martinez

Personally I believe he should go. After watching the reply of Sundays game twice I have absolutely no idea idea how West Ham didn't get a result. A particularly poor West Ham too. Gomes pulling off game changing saves and bad finishing has definitely papered over the cracks. We gifted the game to Everton and could of easily done the same Sunday. Yes we looked very good going forward and could of had a couple more goals. But it still worries me.

Yes, but that's only because he has proven he can win trophies with that style of football. That's the exception - people will put up with crap football if you're winning stuff. If you're not it becomes a stick to beat the manager with.

The flip side is why Martinez was given so long at Everton - he underachieved for two seasons but when he got it right the football was great to watch

Right. So everton fans will accept dour football then. Thanks for clarifying.

You did well in the first season under Martinez but certainly dipped after that - maybe due to the fact he couldn't organise the defence?

  9. I'd be really tempted to have a bet on Unsworth at this point. William Hill (don't know about the other bookies) pay out if a caretaker manager has been in charge for 10 competitive matches. That would be 10th December.

It is odd that Everton are so awful at the back but seem to think that Silva will solve this problem when we've been just as bad. We just have more players who can stick it in the back of the net.

If Silva is still with us by the Newcastle game I think he will be with us for the rest of the season.

First season under Martinez might be the most enjoyable season I can remember since I was a kid. Football was just brilliant.

Defensively we were shambolic from season two onwards

And you've been defensively shambolic since. Without Lukaku banging the goals in the squad has been exposed. Which is strange why you would go for Silva, when you compare us to Burnley we have scored nearly twice as many as they have but we have conceded more than twice as many as they have. The football has been exciting at time this season but the defensive frailties are evident.

If Silva did join you, don't expect the defensive problems to be resolved; at the other end you may score more goals but unless you have some tremendously quick players I can't see Silva's style working for you.

We got promoted under an attacking minded coach, Jokanovic, it's impossible to tell whether he would have well in the following season but the Pozzos sensibly brought in a defensive minded coach. For over half of the season the philosophy of defence first worked well as Deeney and Ighalo scored a lot of goals between them. With a team underperforming the first thing that needs sorting out is the defence, hence why the likes of Pulis and Alladyce get employed all the time because they organise their teams, it may not be pretty but it works. I'm not saying for a second that you should get Pulis in, but whoever you do get in has to look at plugging the leaky defence first, and Silva is not the man to do that.

Additionally after a quick look at the table. You've scored the same number of goals* as Burnley but you've conceded 15 more!

*Of your 12, we gifted you 3 and 1 was a dodgy pen at Palace.

We were alright defensively last season. Not brilliant, but a big improvement from the Martinez laissez-faire approach to defending

This season has been appalling and from a defensive point of view, it's difficult to pinpoint an exact reason why this is the case. We miss Coleman a lot, he's one of the best three or four right backs in the league. We've either had promising kids or Cuco Martina in his position which has been a big issue. We have one left back at the club - Baines was exceptional at one time, but he's 33 next month and whilst he was never lightning quick, his legs are going now a fair bit but we have literally nobody who can play instead of him, so if he's injured/out of form/needs a rest, we have huge problems. Jagielka, like Baines, was great at one time but he's 35 now. Williams hasn't been a good signing, his lack of pace is a huge problem. Keane has been really disappointing, but it's hard to judge when the unit is so poor. In front of them Schneiderlin and Gueye were tremendous last season and this year they've been really poor (Schneiderlin, in particular, has been unbelievably bad).

If Silva comes, I worry about what he has to work with in that defensive unit - Koeman's defensive record at Southampton was absolutely outstanding, so if he was struggling, I can't see how Silva or many others would do too much better. I don't think anyone expects him to suddenly get us watertight, but what he would hopefully bring is the best out of the attacking players we have who were so badly out of form under Koeman

We're playing a dangerous game actually because we're only a couple of consecutive defeats away from absolute disaster. January will be huge for us, because we need to throw money at the problem - we need a bare minimum of three players and that's being extremely kind and assuming that we can get the out-of-form ones back to a decent level, which isn't a given

  22. You need more than 3 players, your ageing squad needs a total rebuild. £500M should just about do it if you have any pretensions of getting back to 7th and 'best of the rest' let alone top 6. Huge job for any incoming manager.

This is now starting to feel like when one of those cold callers phones you so to stop them hassling anyone else you play a game and keep them on the line for as long as possible, (and to p*ss them off). Are we doing this with Everton?

  24. toffeeblue9

I tend to agree that the rebuilding job is underestimated. but that's mostly defensively - we don't have too many other players (Rooney aside) who are ageing to the point where we need to start planning for replacements

Keane was seen as Jagielka's successor, which is fine but Williams and Baines are also problems.

Need a centre back, a left back and a striker in January. That would patch us up until the summer, when we need a very honest and brutal assessment of the squad and who isn't up to the standard required

Bit rich coming from a fan of a team which finished 17th last season - one bad manager (a Mazzari-type) and the Hornets will be back in the Championship.

It will be interesting to see which manager wins the tactical battle at Turf Moor in a few weeks (providing Dyche and Silva are still in charge).

Seriously I don't see Everton going down and Unsworth has at least stopped the rot. Silva is not a good fit for you at this time as he would need patience from Moshiri to be able to put his ideas into practice and you haven't got the right balance in the squad. Kenwright appears to want Dyche and he knows infinitely more about football than Moshiri. Dyche is seriously underrated but he always gets his players organised, motivated and playing to the best of their abilities. His record is great - he did wonders for us on zero money and has not made a wrong step for Burnley. Unless Moshiri is willing to write off many millions in redundant players and is going to wait a solid manager like Dyche is the best option in the short to medium term.

Still fascinates me that when we sacked him the media kept saying he had us playing attractive football.

Barely. It was crap football. He just had the benefit of looking rugged and Mediterranean.
