Issue I have is Everton just seem to be totally inept and we could be the ones to suffer from it. Who in their right mind sacks a manager without having a replacement readily available to step in. it's pretty certain the Pozzo's have a Plan A, B and C re coaches and certainly wouldn't take a month to get someone appointed.

With the Pozzo's in charge if anybody thinks we are a soft touch and will roll over they can think again

Fed up now with all of this and doesn't reflect well on Everton as a club

Understandable to want to come to Everton, the timing stinks

    You're welcome

The bold bit is the point, it's not just you but all Premier League clubs have had a cash injection like no other before, therefore for clubs like Bournemouth under previous TV deals they would have struggled because the revenue from tickets was a much higher proportion of their income. Now clubs like Everton do not have as much clout over smaller clubs in the PL than they used to. I also think that a lot of this has been orchestrated by the press particularly as we are used to the fact that since the Pozzo's took over in 2012 that leaks from within are few and far between, even to the press.

Yes it was totally outrageous that Chelsea used the media to try to unsettle Stones. Good job that Everton definitely aren't doing that with Silva - must just be luck that so many journalists are so well informed about how Everton want to double his salary, how much money he'll have to spend in the transfer window, how many approaches there have been and that he's going to have to resign if he wants to go to Everton.

Can't argue with the first bit. Koeman was our new owner's "marquee" signing, so it was felt that there was always going to be reluctance to sack him. Not having started the ball rolling on replacements before he went was borderline criminal

I don't have any issue with us wanting Silva, don't think that reflects badly on us, but the last month of being linked with everyone from Sam Allardyce to Diego Simeone has made us a laughing stock

If you can find quotes from anyone at Everton urging Silva to leave Watford to join them, I'll agree it's comparable. The rest of it is fairly standard stuff as far as the sort of information you would expect to read in this kind of situation

Because we've not won anything since then? It's a source of embarrassment to us given our historical standards, but we've been a top 7 club for much of that period, not sure that really constitutes a laughing stock. I'll refrain from making comparisons because this is your board, not mine.

No seems about it. It's exactly what he is. We knew we were a stepping stone, but this has come ridiculously early, and there's no way on this planet that he hasn't been talking to your hierarchy.

As a head coach or manager, he's very good, but I wouldn't employ him.

  15. If Gino say no, what can Silva do? If he resigns and gets put on gardening leave, his career has a 9 month hiatus and gets a black mark for lack of professionalism. If he does his job deliberately badly, or even not to the best of his ability, his career is tarnished and the Arsenal / Chelsea / Utd jobs which will probably be up for grabs in a couple of years look less attainable.

I hope Gino says no, and adds 'let's pretend this never happened' - and that Marco, pragmatic and intelligent chap that he is, plays the long game and continues to burnish his reputation with us, 'til the end of the season at least.

  19. From that Arab News link:
Silva's agent, Carlos Goncalves, has suggested that Everton retain David Unsworth as an interim manager until the end of season, at which point a one-year break clause could be activated in his client's current contract. (Goncalves also represented Villas-Boas when his switch to Chelsea set a new high watermark in club-to-club compensation for a coach.)

    That is remarkably specific.

Agents, Everton, Watford, Silva himself (he's mentioned Everton by name at least once that I'm aware of). No doubt we'll be one source of information, but I think you're missing the point slightly. I would expect this sort of stuff in any transfer, whether that's a player or manager. The parallel was made between this and Stones and I'm saying that the reason we eventually refused to sell (after negotiating) was the reaction to Chelsea's brazen campaign, using their own employees to openly urge him to leave Everton and sign for Chelsea. It was a line which Everton felt they had crossed.

I just want you to take him soon.

We'll be alright. Anyone competent will look like a great manager with players like Richarlison in the side, and we might even find a coach who can do basic work on defending set pieces!

You're an idiot if you think that Watford are releasing stories to the media about how Silva's salary will be doubled and how big Everton's transfer budget in January will be.

I'm not missing the point - you think Chelsea were out of order for pursuing Stones openly but somehow think it's acceptable to try to unsettle Silva through repeated anonymous briefing newspapers. We get it, that's the way football works these days but it's quite amusing to see you make out that there's some big moral difference between the two approaches.

What pisses me off is this belief in the media and from ****head pundits like Garth Crooks (and I think some of us here are guilty of falling into the trap) that it's somehow inevitable that Silva will go to Everton. Why is it inevitable? We are higher in the table and have the better squad so he is more likely to achieve something with us this season than with them. Surely a small club like Watford finishing in the top 10 is a bigger achievement than managing to keep up a struggling, albeit bigger, basket case of a club

  24. toffeeblue9

Morally - there's not a huge amount of difference. Practically it made it very difficult for the club to sell Stones to Chelsea without an enormous backlash from the fans which the then-owner couldn't afford.

Re salary and budget - not convinced that's us briefing in all honesty. We were paying Koeman £6m per year and spent £140m in the summer, it's only reasonable you would expect similar sorts of figures. Tempted to believe that's speculation.

Having said that, if we smell blood in the Silva chase, I'm not suggesting for a moment that we wouldn't be briefing the press where appropriate. The one to watch is Jim White - for some unfathomable reason he is a close friend of our owner. If he talks about it, you can bet he has been briefed.

Absolutely. Any top half, or even mid-table finish with Watford is going to increase his stock more than anything he might do with Everton this season.

It's a nonsense to me that he's even considering the Everton job at this point, but it does tell me a lot about the man.

because money talks, and everton now have loads of it. How is it difficult to understand? He'll get a pay rise, and a huge transfer budget at everton. Which I suspect they have told him he'll have complete control of, unlike here at watford.

I am struggling to think of any reasons why he would stay. I guess living near london is nice, but certainly not the be all and end all. It's not like we even have wild passionate fans that will be hard to leave. Perhaps he loves big flags? I'm not sure.

I'd leave a job after a few months without hesitation. Why wouldnt he?

This is great post and very objective. The crux really is that there are two outcomes for you both of which are bad. He comes and does an average job, you’re no further forward. He comes and does a great job, you'll then be in our position sooner or later. Obviously Watford are unique when it comes to managers, we tend to only offer two year contracts, no doubt you’ll give Silva a 4 or 5 year contract so on paper you’ll have more security but in reality it won’t mean a jot. We know either way he won’t be or manager in two years time or less and you will likely be in a very similar situation if he goes to you.

Seems to be a theme of people believing this

We have a Director of Football at Everton, Steve Walsh (he of Vardy, Kante, Mahrez fame). The club has been restructured in the last 18 months so that he now has ultimate control over transfers. According to the interviews he has conducted, he says the manager is involved in the recruitment process as far as opinions and requirements are concerned, but Walsh has the final say and can overrule the manager if necessary.

Unless we are planning to sack Walsh (unlikely at this point, I would imagine), I can't see how Silva gets much more involvement in transfer decisions than he gets now

This journalist is also the one who linked us with god-knows how many players in the summer including Nicolas Gaitan. He works in the far-east and writes for the Daily Record in Scotland. Far be it for me to doubt a journalist who may have contacts - but I do highly doubt this one.

"Complete control" must be the main attraction. We know he wasn't keen on the Wague signing and was unhappy generally with our failure to upgrade the defence.

But that would only make sense if he's been promised that Steve Walsh would be elbowed aside.
