[SIGNED perm] Chalobah 5Yr deal

I think an interesting way to look at this transfer is 'what we would be thinking about it had Chalobah not had the loan season with us?'

Are we viewing it differently because he did?

Or would we be delighted to sign him anyway?

Personally I think he would be a decent addition, even if he's not fully kicked on from his very good spell with us in the Championship.

 

I'd still want him for £5m without the season he had with us as we'd easily recoup the money if it didn't work out but would probably be more sceptical given that he hasn't really progressed as he should have given the promise at 17 years old. Anything less than £10m is a good deal though regardless given 'English prices' such as Grabban being £8m...

 

Chelsea are responsible for Chalobah not progressing as he should have. Following his season with us he should have come back where he would have been a shoe-in to start games, but instead they gave him a wopping great contract (£35k per week at 17/18) and shunted him around from club to club where he's hardly had a kick for 4 years.

 

He's only 5 million because he has one year left on his contract, and doesn't want to sit in the bench. His value would rise next year, even if he is not a failure - bar a long term injury. A Championship team would be willing to pick him up, for at least that.

So then the question becomes, is he good enough to be in our squad. And the answer to that is clearly yes.

Hughes, Chalobah and Cleverley have a good balance of dynamism, quality of pass, solid tackling and work rate. Oh, and they're English, which should satisfy the pundits.

 

Possible signings like this are just the next step forward. For two years we've signed experienced players who they know and will help keep us in the league. Job done. Now we are in our third season we need to look forward a bit more and start bringing in younger hungry players, maybe with a point to prove that can hopefully take us to the next level. I honestly think there is a reason we haven't gone for young English players like Hughes and hopefully Chalobah and that is that we knew what kind of football we were going to play and it wouldn't suit them. Mazarri said that the aim was to stay in the division but I feel they now think it's time to aim higher. These bargains have always been there but they just didn't suit our plan at the time.

I agree with all of these points bar where you say these bargains have always been there...the market for English players is notoriously inflated, especially for the young ones which are stock-piled by the big boys.

You're absolutely right but there is always a bargain if you look hard enough

 

Side note, Wolves getting 15 million for Neves will be a great steal. Captains his side at the Champions league at 17, already won trophies. Plays nearly every game, is calm and collective on the ball, can pass, dribble and dictate the tempo of the game, bags of stamina etc. Is Portuguese so you know he could be good and isn't over hyped like other talents around the world at the moment.

But its still a yes from me on chalobah.

 

If Chelsea have a Sell On % then go for it, but if they insist on a Bay Back Clause I'd just wait out the contract.
