Certainly will have options in midfield - wonder how Cleverley will feel though having signed and then seen us bring in 2 other midfielders (better)

To think a few days ago I was peeved we did not get an Allan or Lemina. If we add Chalobah to Hughes, Pereyra, Zarate, Doucoure, Cleverly and Capoue means Marco will have loads of great midfield mix n' match options. I have assumed Watson and Behrami are off plus Suarez never hanging around. Sure Marco will rotate sensibly and keep it fresh and all players reasonably happy. Now for the wings and up front! Will be interesting to see how this turns out. Inexpensive gamble. On the positive side, was great for us 4 years ago, England U21, Chelsea youngster, cheap. On the other side has barely played any club football in 4 years and no guarantee he will be develop to be premier quality. I would have preferred Lemina but hopefully this means we have c£15/20m extra to strengthen elsewhere.

Can't really believe £5m! Need it confirmed before I will believe it - why are others not in for him. It's peanuts

Maybe he's made it clear to his agent where he wants to go and that's that? Other clubs wouldn't bother bidding if those representing him make noises suggesting he won't join them anyway.

This would be brilliant business at £5m. I know he's not proven in the Prem but he has talent... Chelsea being Chelsea need higher profile players, and who'll deliver as the end product every game. We can afford to let him have the odd game under par and give time to develop further.

That's the problem with clubs that want instant success. Chelsea fans rate Chalobah very highly and are fuming they are selling him, let alone with no sell on/buy back clause. We benefit from their ridiculous model. Some Chelsea fans have made me laugh though with comments like, watch Man City buy him for £40mil in 2 years. They really are upset with this deal.

    This would be great.

Whether it's a midfield pairing of two or three having a central midfielder bank consisting of:

    Pereyra
    Capoue
    Doccoure
    Hughes
    Chalobah
    Cleverley
(Assuming Watson & Behrami are off)

is very, very exciting. Add to the mix that Chalobah would make it 3 HG midfielders, that's also very nice to see.

Can't see anything wrong with this and just like Will Hughes, a signing I would make in fantasy land if I was Watford manager which is always nice to see as it brings a certain level of expectation, rather than players we've never heard of!

  14. No one could possibly see anything wrong with signing Chalobah and Hughes. Unless it goes boobs up, and then we'll all knowingly say how naive the Pozzos were relying on two unproven a-holes who lack passion and Prem experience.

Yep. It would be an exciting signing.

Yep. The risk, financially, is minimal if the quoted price is true.

Yep, it is a risk, but I would be happy for the club to take it.

No, I would not hold myself responsible for my support of these signings if they turn out to be worth the amount we are paying for them.

Yep. I love being a football fan.

If we get anything close to the rumored price (without a buy-back) then this is great deal. Would happily have Chalobah instead of Lemina as I don't think the latter is 2 to 3 times better (I know prices don't work like that).

However I do think we need to use the potential money saved to bring in some guaranteed quality as we have mostly bought young prospects so far. For me I'd like to see the extra money added to the "Markovic fund" to buy a forward or striker that is "proven" in some sense.

  16. I like Chalobah and for that price it would be a no brainer.

That said, I would prefer Lemina, by a long margin.

Nathan's potential is massive, so I say go for it at that price, but it could swing either way, and Chelskis willingness to sell at the quoted price suggests strongly that they do not particularly rate him, or have concerns about him achieving that potential.

I don't see Chalobah as a big risk in EPL. The best three 17 year old players I've seen at Watford are in first John Barnes, then Ashley Young and Nat Chalobah in third. Barnes had unrivaled dribbling, Young had speed and grace but Chalobah controlled matches with his vision and passing. Zola is the only coach who has given him that opportunity. What astonishing maturity at seventeen! It's not his fault he has not played much since but pretty sure he'll be hungry. Hughes also sounds he has right attitude to make it. The main thing is we now have a progressive manager who does well with motivating players to develop and give of their best. So although other clubs are spending loads it's refreshing to see Gino's switch to young talent including British players. Feelings are good. coyhs!

Will be good to have a few Johnny Englanders in the team .

Let's hope they can adapt to the English game and climate . Not to mention the food .

  19. I suspect, if we have mobile attacking players around him, the team will prosper from Deeney's awareness and ability to nuance the ball to surrounding players, as per him and Iggy combining in the first few months under Quique.

Wouldn't be worried if we go with what we've got, particularly if our attacking mids are fit. I think, if he stays, Zarate could find himself with a modified attacking role.

  20. I strongly agree with pretty much everything you say here, but I do think there is a risk involved, and I guess what I am trying to do is head off some of the blame and vitriol that will almost certainly come his way if he doesn't work out.

I would have had Cally in the list of best seventeen year olds at the club, and I don't think many would suggest things turned out well for him, despite having every bit the potential of Barnes, IMHO. We let him go because the club could not control him, or persuade him to control himself, in a manner that could sustain his footballing career, which, joking aside, was secondary in his mind to his career as a DJ, and his hunger for Wendy burgers. Cautionary tale ended.

Chalobah is very much a risk for the prem. He's barely got on the pitch for Burnley or chelski in the prem or Napoli(?) On loan since he played for us. His career has not moved fwd as we'd expected when watching that promising 17 year old and we are buying potential as what looks to be a superb price. But like 424 I'm disappointed that this means there is unlikely to be room for a more experienced and expensive holding CMF. Hopefully he turns into a real prem quality player. But he's not close to that yet and I'd be surprised if he isn't a bit part player next season. Both he and Hughes are quality potential at a cheap price. I would like to have seen a proven top quality CMF come in.

Top top signing if it happens! Just look at the Chelsea message boards and how annoyed they are. Most of their fans want him as back up to Kante and are irritated that although they won the league last year, it was done at the expense of squad rotation meaning unhappiness amongst squad players.

    He's cheap, he's young, he's hg, he's got huge potential. It's a no brainier

Totally agree. With the right handling Chalobah's talent will come to the fore again. Southgate obviously rates him. Bear in mind Stoke paid 2 million yesterday for experience in Jon Walters, but zero potential or sell-on. I have long thought that Capoue is not suited to playing game after game and will be more effective if used carefully. Even Cleverly who has good engine was looking weary by the end last season. Modest rotation and quality cover in midfield will improve our chances of competing. Both Hughes and Chalobah can pass forward intelligently. Gino could have blown all the money on someone like Lemina. But what if gets crocked. After we lost Pereyra last season we just went down hill creatively aside from three games when Niang turned it on. Think we are spreading our bets this time. Also still money left for keeper, defenders, winger and striker. COYHs!

Sorry meant Walters went to Burnley from Stoke. Apparently the original bid of six figures made by Dyche was deemed an insult. Inflated crazy prices so Gino must be doing something right.

I agree that there is an element of risk involved in this transfer (providing it happens). If we're giving up on more established, higher quality targets such as Lemina/Allan to sign Chalobah then we're putting a lot of faith in a young inexperienced player. If he doesn't hit the ground running we've potentially missed out on strengthening a position properly. I for 1 am perfectly happy to do this because I loved Chalobah last time he was here and I think more young English players should be given the opportunity.

On the flip side of this, Chalobah can become class and we could easily be saving 15mil in transfer fees and 30k a week in wages. If this money is added to our ST, W funds and we can now get some more attacking deals over the line then I think it's great business.

We could increase our bid for Markovic and have plenty left to help us sign a ST, CB, LB and GK

    Meh, kinda.

How times have change in football full stop tbh. £5 million isn't far off from being cheap in The Championship in a time where Wolves are signing Ruben bloody Neves!!!

  27. Sahorn

    True.
Inflation throughout the league all brought on initially by Sky money spiralling the transfer fees allied with huge wage demands and agents fees.

But I just think we could have been in poor Walsall's position where every transfer window they just pray for a Troy Deeney sell-on to help their strained finances and buy a £300k player.

We have been blessed by Ken Furphy, GT/SEJ partnership and now the Pozzo family allowing us to dream big and talk of 5 million pounds - pah, that's peanuts.

If there's a buy-back clause - does anyone know what that actually means? Does it mean Chelsea can buy him back at a pre-agreed fee whenever they fancy?

Exactly - i wish the media would stop winding everyone up with words like bargain / steal / 5m etc - first it will cost far more - the won't sell Ake for 20 and a better player for 5 - the last year of contract issue is a non issue if there are lots of people looking to buy him - Southampton / Swansea / brighton / muff / Palarse / West brom / Stoke etc - all would be massively improved by Chalobah - no way will this cost anyone less than 10-15 in the long run - I am still in at that price but all the stories encourage bottom feeders like Hughes - i prefer silence until the ink is dry

No - if we chose to sell then they would have first refusal at a pre agreed price would be the way it would work - it is not a "call option" which is what you describe

Lemina is 23 and has played 110 games so far, Chalobah is 22 and has played 153 (all taken from Transfermarkt so assuming it's correct). Yes Lemina plays for Juventus but given a choice between €20m for Lemina or a knockdown price for Chalobah then there's only one winner for me. They could both become brilliant players with regular football but Chalobah should slot into the club and Premier League football perfectly.
