Wand of a left boot and passion galore. Haven't seen him play for a bit but I used to love him.

No spring chicken though is he? His re-sale value isn't going to go up, which make me a little doubtful of this one.

It's not all about the transfer fee; value can be added in different ways. Almunia. Cassetti. Munari. Those players weren't signed with a view to selling on for profit.

A little bit of research (asking people who know better than I do) suggests he's a bit of a lump these days.

Ah the old Watford and West Ham link again. I'm waiting for us to be linked with Carton Cole.

Seriously the guy is a magician. Even if he's only a squad player next season making cameo appearances I would LOVE to see him in a Watford shirt

Check a name surprise for Watford. According to the Corriere dello Sport , the Hornets are granting Alessandro Diamanti playmaker class '83 returned to Guangzhou after six months on loan at Fiorentina. Diamonds had proposed to Bologna, where in three seasons with the club has made 22 goals in 88 appearances, but the Bolognese were doubtful, and so the player has decided to return to the Premier League, where he has already played with the shirt of West Ham.

I think he could be just what we need playing behind Troy. Always seemed passionate and hardworking when I saw him and you'd imagine he still has the quality.

Another one of the squad that got us up will have to make way in the 25-man squad...

Why is this an argument? If they're not good enough then whats the point of keeping them?

Of the 11 that started our final league match of last season, 9 still remain! Connolly was only on loan, while Motta was a short-term contract signing. They totalled 10 starts between them over the season.

Of the 3 subs we used that day, 2 still remain. Tozser is the exception, but he was only on loan last season too.

So, although I agree at times it feels like a large proportion of last season's players who won us promotion are missing out, that's not actually born out by the stats!

On Friday night we started with 6 of last season's main players, which probably would have been 7 had Abdi been fit!

Just doesn't sit well. I tend to agree with you but the complete disregard for the likes of Tozser and the others who will be tossed aside just doesn't quite feel right.

"Tossed aside" - these are professional football players. They will all walk into another 15k a week job. Lets not be too sentimental - betther for them to sign a 3 year contract elsewhere and play week in week out rather than sit around not even in match day squad.

I hope Lloyd signs a 3 year deal with a championship club raher than sit around and rot.

I think it's a very valid debate, but I'm confident we'll start at Everton with at least 5 of last year's players (Gomes, Cathcart, Deeney, Ighalo and I think there'll be a surprise selection, maybe Layun or Anya). Still hoping Abdi will be available too.

It'll be interesting to see which side has the most debutants next weekend..it may be us, but equally the likes of Stoke, Leicester, Villa, Sunderland even Liverpool could push us close!

Couple of silly stats ahead of next Saturday btw..

The last time we lost on the opening day of the season was...at Everton!!

    and

The only Watford manager in the last 12 years to lose his first OFFICIAL match in charge was Spanish! (Malky lost his first game as caretaker, but not his first match when he was appointed manager after BR left).

    Hmmmmm!

Daniel Toszer isn't good enough anymore for the Premiership and maybe he was never quite good enough. Pointless keeping him around for sentimentality.

If you get hired by a company to deliver a project once that contract is finished there is no reason for them to keep you just because that particular project was successful. You get kept on if you can do the next one. I can't see where we have dispensed with anyone who could have reasonably been expected to compete at the level we have to now.

Football isn't like any other business though.

As it happens, I think Tozser is very much good enough and I reckon a few others were saying the same at the end of the season. A real shame.

The Pozzos are ruthless and have got basically every big decision right, but the club now has a habit of not only making big, brave decisions but being totally heartless in the process. The way they sacked McKinlay was another example.

I'd rather have it this way than how it's been before and this is not some sort of massive anti-Pozzo rant before everyone overreacts but I think there can be a way of doing things. There hasn't been one single mention of Tozser's departure from the club.

Yep, I make you right. The surprise might be Watson in one of the holding positions, with Behrami pushed further forward if 2 of Abdi/Mountainhouse/Jurado aren't fit to start.

Assuming this is in response to the above post about Tozser leaving, he's quite clearly left the club and I'd agree that it's strange that the club haven't released a statement confirming the exit of a player who was a huge influence over the past 18 months.

I reckon we'd be more likely to see Capoue pushed up than Behrami, personally. Could also be a combination of Layun/Anya/Vydra/Ighalo behind Deeney as a front four, which isn't bad given we have three players in that position potentially out.

I think you'll find McKinlay got a generous settlement. Footballers even at Champ level are paid enormous amounts. Along with the benefits of that comes the downside that they can be dispensed with at end of their contracts and even while under contract they are not guaranteed a place in the team. If they find the downside of the wealthy lifestyle they are in the wrong business. And it isn't all one-sided. How much loyalty to many players show if they get a better offer?
