I'd rather he can defend and needs work on his passing than the reverse.
He's very young and needs to play and learn.

If he’s not so weak as to be knocked off the ball by a light breeze and not so brittle as to shatter like a china teapot when he makes a tackle, then he’s an upgrade.

If we bring in Struber, he doesn't like to have his full-backs uneven with one defensive and one attacking - his preferred 4-3-1-2 diamond formation asks both full-backs to effectively act as wing-backs.

One thing I don't understand in that analysis is how "defensive duels per game" and "defensive duels won %" is defined and where those stats come from?

He looks very good on that graph there, but the data seems to have zero relation to the tackles attempted and tackles successful data I can see where he seems decent but not exceptional - whoscored has him at 55% "tackle success" and FBREF at 63% "tackle success"; while that guy's graph has his "defensive duels won" at 73%.

Relatedly, Ngakia's "percentage of dribblers tackled" on FBREF is marginally below average at 30% (Femenia was 37%, Masina 31%).

One other odd thing it that guy's stats, why has he omitted Wan-Bissaka and Alexander-Arnold?

Too many reports talk about him being "close to signing" and us being amongst the club's interested. It's clearly not a done deal that he will join us.

Data from his four or five appearances. Pointless to look at imo.

Maybe they're waiting until after the tribunal to announce it?

If Struber likes wing-backs that can't defend, we don't need to sign anyone.

I was at that game and it was his debut playing against Mane. He kept Mane quiet and provided a bit of an outlet. I think his passing stats are a bit of a red herring - not many players will get great stats in a game against Liverpool when most your passes are hoofs up the line.

    Five appearances.

I don't think it's completely pointless, the stats seem to reflect what appear to be his general strengths and weaknesses, and also that Johnson seems a better prospect out of Spam's young RBs.

    That depends on:
    - if we keep Pervis for the LB spot, because Masina offers next to nothing going forwards
    - If we keep Femenia
    - If we keep Janmaat and he stays fit

I think we'll definitely keep Janmaat. He will play less than 20 games next season.

It wasn't just in his matches against Liverpool though.

    Ngakia's pass completion:

    - Liverpool Away (0-2 loss) - 56%
    - Liverpool Home (2-3 loss) - 54%
    - Southampton Home (3-1 win) - 44%
    - Arsenal Away (0-1 loss) - 76%
    - Wolves Home (0-2 loss) - 52%

So he achieved the average pass completion percentage for a PL full-back in only one of his 5 matches, which included his lowest %age in a 3-1 Home win vs Southampton.

Some West Ham fans seemed to pick up in their thread on him that passing accuracy is a weak point of his at the moment as well.

Along with defensive concentration across 90 minutes it's clear that's something he def needs to work on.

If Janmaat can generally stay fit then him and Ngakia should be good rotation options.

It will be a miracle if we get him to play twenty games given his playing record. Send him to the glue factory.

Being exceptionally lazy here but how many minutes did he play in each of those games?

Janmaat and Ngakia on the right, and Estupinan and Masina on the left gives us a good balance of experience and promising talent at full back.

Ideally I'd like to see a more experienced replacement for Masina come in, and a flexible back up who can play across the defencel (/ike the roles Mariappa and Doyley have played for us in the past) but if we need to settle on this so we can sort out centre back and centre forward positions then I'd be happy with that.

I think Masina could be a good a Center back, worth trying him there in pre-season atleast.

I can't see Estupinan ever putting on a Watford shirt.

Janmaat just signed a new contract and injured though.

Cannot sell all the players ..

    Agree on Pervis.

If this has been supposedly nailed on for so long I'm surprised there's no announcement yet.

Probably realised he's made a huge mistake.
