Is Marco Silva all that?

That may be so. I may have slightly overplayed my comment but the jist of my overall comment remains the same. You don’t replace Pulis with Allardyce when the fans are already turning due to the style of play.

There’ll be some scenes on Merseyside though when they started with Simeone/Cavani, then thought they’d settle for Silva/Richarlison and end up LVG/Fellaini.

Funny the hypocritical nature of these clubs. Everton fans and board were beside themselves with Chelsea's pursuit of John Stones and still refuse to do business with them because of it. It's fine when they do it to us though innit.

Yes, I think you are on the money there. Palace, unfortunately, I think may well pull round under Hodgson, with plenty of time still to go.

That was actually a decade ago...

A game my uncle came to and got so plastered before, during and after the game that my aunt and parents were ringing me asking where he was later on. I said I'd last seen him in the Peel and they found him asleep on a stool at the bar in there.

They carried him home and he shat his bed that night. He's from Doncaster and not a blood relative. He's a good laugh, used to work in Amsterdam and woke up in Utrecht after a night out more than once.

True. One thing the new TV deal has done is it has near enough made most of the other clubs outside of the top 6 a much of a muchness meaning that no-one within the 14 have any financial clout over another. History will only take you so far and as Sunderland and Villa have shown recently that a well run club such as ours and dare I say it, the likes of Bournemouth and Burnley, actually hold better prospects than a number of historically bigger clubs. And long may it continue.

The chances are if we allowed Silva to talk to Everton he might well go, but having said that I don't think he will try to force the agenda and walk out on us. As I think he is happy here, but he is also ambitious and human, wouldn't you take a job that was offering to double your salary?

I believe that he means what he says in the media interviews he has given, which basically is that if the Pozzo's want him to stay he will, equally if they are happy to let him leave then he will go!

At the end of the day he will continue do his job for WFC, because that is what it is to him, A JOB! He is not a WFC fan or for that matter a fan of any other club, he is a professional "Fooball Coach/Manager and he will be loyal to whoever is paying his wages, and long may that be WFC!

And at least we have complete and utter assurance now that he won't be signing any new contracts with us. He's here for 2 years max, likely even less, and everyone should make peace with that fact now to be honest.

I agree with every word of this. He probably would like the Everton gig as they're a bigger club with a huge transfer budget. But as he's said to the media, it's down to the owners of the respective clubs to sort it out while he just gets on with his job. There are rumours that the club aren't happy with him refusing to commit on Friday and again on Sunday so I think we are buying time while we sort out a replacement and bend Everton over for compensation.

What do people actually mean when they say "There are rumours that..."? Where have they heard these rumours? In the press? From someone working at the club? Pundits? Or are they just self-generated on a message board somewhere?
Using this phrase presents something as a semi-truth, which is unhelpful without some evidence to back it up. Perhaps it's just attention seeking behaviour.

Some pisshead (it wasn't me) drove their car out of the pub car park the other day and clipped a couple of cars along the road.

I haven't spoken to any of those car's owners, but rumour has it they're not very pleased.

Thanks to this post though, I'm going to assume they're really happy about it until I see evidence to the contrary.

Interesting article here about the situation from a British journalist working out in the Middle East:

    http://www.arabnews.com/node/1196601/sports

A couple of things in there that haven't been mentioned elsewhere - that Silva has a break clause after a year; and that Roger Schmidt was our first choice for head coach in the summer but wouldn't compromise on his all-out attack tactics.

Basically it's media who are fueling any rumours that are out there.

If they were not always trying to create news stories, and I'm not just talking about football, instead of just reporting actually what is happening in the world, this whole saga would already be consigned to chip shop wrapping paper by now

I can’t be the only one who thinks his post match interview wasn’t as bad as everyone is making out?

To me it just sounds like he’s doesn’t want to rule himself out IF Gino actually decides to reach an agreement with Everton.

At the end of the day he’s a 40 year old bloke from Portugal, why would he be so loyal to Watford when there is a bigger club knocking offering a substantially better salary?

His celebration after our first goal made me realise that he will still be committed to our cause for as long as he is here and we were back to our best against West Ham too. If it was an abject performance and 4th loss in a row I might have questioned whether he threw the game / lost the players confidence.

I think really is as simple as thus: He won’t force a move but If the two clubs sort something out he’ll happily go.

We have to hope that the Pozzos refuse any amount of compensation that Everton offer, in which case he’ll stay.

If Everton hit a number the Pozzos feel is viable then he’ll go.

Surprised at both major points. Break clause would suit Silva a lot more than us this time around rather than QSF (Who ironically insisted on his) and although we were heavily linked with Schmidt I was under the impression Silva was our main target. Not discrediting it though.

Also surely a manager cannot force a move? Nothing to do with their reputation etc, but if a manager forces a move they’re then ****ed if one of their players chooses to do it later on down the line. It wouldn’t give them a leg to stand on when dealing with such an issue and would completely undermine them.

I thought the Schmidt thing was pretty well known, I even wrote an article about how he'd work at Watford (https://www.esdfanalysis.com/manager-analysis/watford-schmidt-worked/)! Now when you add Richarlison, Gray, Carillo and Femenia into the mix that team would look pretty damn nice.

    White flag here...

I'm an Evertonian, as the username may suggest (My father-in-law is a Watford season ticket holder though and I used to attend the odd game when I was living in Hertfordshire, so you're kinda my 2nd team).

This whole thing doesn't leave me with a good taste in the mouth - but much of it isn't really Everton I'm troubled by. We need a new manager, desperately. We have spent much of the last 15 years or so working on a shoestring budget (in relative terms) and just about staying on the periphery of the top 6 or 7. 18 months ago or so we finally got the cash injection we have needed for so long. Plans are moving for a new stadium and there's been significant development in our infrastructure. We splashed out on a "big name" manager and invested heavily in the playing staff and as a result of that the expectation levels around the club have risen considerably - whether or not it's reasonable for expectation levels to have risen is a different argument, the fact remains that they have.

So, Koeman's horrific start to this season was never going to be tolerated and it wasn't really s surprise his services were dispensed with after only nine league games. It's probably unrealistic to expect any youth team manager to take over the first team for 29 league games and see big improvement, so we are left with a bit of a quandry. Nobody who is available as an interim appointment would satisfy the new-found ambition of the fans and the owner and at the same time there doesn't really appear to be anyone who we might approve of who is attainable as things stand. It's led to a feeling that things are dragging on.

And then we come to Marco Silva. Silva is one of the rising stars in England - he did good work in Greece and Portugal before he came here, did well with Hull and almost saved them when it looked utterly hopeless when he arrived and he has done really quite well with Watford it would appear from the outside looking in. The issue with him is that he has only been in his current role for less than 6 months, so under normal circumstances you would assume he falls into the "unattainable" category and this is where I start to have a bit of an issue. I think it's perfectly understandable for Everton to want him, I think it's perfectly understandable for us to sound out the various parties to see if there would be any interest in doing a deal. I don't think it's understandable for a manager to want to jump ship from one Premier League team to another in November in his first season with them. It's unprecedented as far as I'm aware. I can't think of another situation like this which has ever arisen in my time as a football fan. I'm gobsmacked. As a manager, I think he would be a good appointment. As a man, it makes me question his integrity. I appreciate that there is precious little loyalty in football anymore and I understand why we would be seen as a more attractive proposition by Silva (league positions aside, Everton are still a bigger club with wider exposure and he would have a huge budget here), but this is bordering on outrageous.

From my perspective as an Everton fan, I'd like him as Everton boss. This situation will leave me under no illusions that if he did well for us, he'd be off to Arsenal or Chelsea or whoever the moment the opportunity arose, so at least we would all know where we stand, but he does seem to get results by playing good football. From my perspective as a football fan, it stinks - not enough is being made about this in the wider media.

Just to take issue with the point a few people have made about Everton refusing to deal with Chelsea over John Stones - that's slightly different. Everton didn't have an issue with another club wanting to buy our player. The issue was around Chelsea's ridiculous media campaign to get him there. Mourinho, Gary Cahill and John Terry all did interviews urging Stones to sign for Chelsea - it was that which hardened our stance and infuriated the fans so much. When Man City came in there was no such examples of them talking about him in the press beforehand, hence it went far smoother.

Anyway, sorry about all of this. I think the situation reflects really poorly on Silva, but I would question your board if they were to agree to let your manager leave this early. Surely they can stop this if they want to?

Over the last week or so I've skimmed over a few blogs and reports, the gist is that Silva should/must go there but none have really made a convincing argument as to why. Yes Everton are a bigger club than us and have more media attention than us but in my opinion these could work against him. The level of expectation up there would be such that anything below a certain position would be deemed a failure, imagine if they finished 16th or 17th? The headlines would be "narrowly avoided relegation". Secondly someone posted on here about the best in each position between the two clubs, well if he has a choice the choice is which squad would be best to promote himself to the radar of even bigger clubs? On the face of it the squad that we currently have is better than theirs, despite the obvious shortcomings in defence, our shortcomings are not as bad as Everton's.

Another thing that the press has brought up is the transfer kitty available to him. If he goes now and has a kitty in January, everyone knows January prices are higher than summer prices and the risks higher, he won't get anyone from us because no doubt the Pozzos will put a clause in to prevent it. Also I'm not entirely sure that having a spend is something Silva is entirely familiar with directly, I doubt that in his time at Lisbon and Olympiakos that he had a huge amount of control or say in transfers likewise at his limited time at Hull and us. This in itself could lead to a higher amount of pressure if he brings in players who don't hit the ground running.

Finally, I am certain that if he does go, this will be a world record fee for a manager, let him have that pressure. Meanwhile, I imagine part of the delay is us getting the biggest compensation possible and time to find a replacement, if we find an attacking minded replacement quickly then I believe that with the talent at their disposal that the transition will be fairly straight forward.

I saw this yesterday and is a little worrying as although the story is in the arab news Duncan Castles does at least add some detail in his story, most other stories bandied around are just so called pundits views

Can imagine Gino is pissed off but you can rest assured if Silva does go it wont take us a month to appoint a new coach and the outcome will either involve hefty compensation or Silva going on gardening leave.

Pretty sure too we wouldn't go for the likes of Allardyce or Pulis
