There will certainly be plenty uncomfortable at the thought of having a machine with a microphone that is constantly turned on permanently connected to the internet.

I think more to the point is that it's an utterly useless feature that's ONLY use is a prohibitive one.

It seems incredibly intrusive, no matter if or not that's what it's intentions were.

My internet has never been down for a day or more. And if it was, I would create a wifi hotspot from my phone and connect the xbox to that as it only needs to validate a licence. Simple. Can iphones do this?

I can only imagine the horrible lag that would occur if you connected a games console to a 3g connection

Well you wouldn't play online through a mobile. You would use broadband for that.

yes, but you wouldn't do that to play the game? just to validate the account?

I just don't see the always online as an issue. the only thing that bothers me slightly is the price, but to be honest I think the games look so good that I will still get it.

The internet in my area is shocking. It's always under maintenance so it would be an issue for me. I imagine it would be ten times worse for someone in an isolated area.

Again my original problem, what is the point of this feature if it's only gonna cause people grief?

It's a bit like with government, people criticise a policy and yet also criticise a u-turn. It all depends on how hard they hammer home the "we've listened to feedback" line, rather than the prevailing opinion of the u-turn of incompetence.

Fair play to Microsoft for coming out and announcing a U-Turn. I don't think anyone will be arguing that the new position isn't the more appropriate one.

well. at least they realised why people had problems with the console and have decided to do something about it. as i have already said i will be getting the new xbox anyway even prior to these changes. however this may help to change the mindset of some of those caught in the middle.

Yeah this massively changes things. Hopefully if theyre trying to encourage single use downloaded games then it might bring the price of them down as well.

I'll still be sticking with the PS4, Microsoft have only performed this U-turn because of the backlash they have received. This just further shows that they don't care about gamers rather they care about the sales.

As do Sony. As does 99% of companies.

    That's the PS4 stuffed then.

Why? I'm not arguing that. Had they cared about the gamers they wouldn't have needed to make these changes. They didn't think about what the consumer wanted and instead bolted on needless extras.

The pressure for restricting the second hand games market has been primarily from third party developers. I hardly see how they were thinking about their own sales when they were thinking about this pointless feature.

Besides you've contradicted yourself. GAMERS told them they didn't like the feature. So they changed it. How does that mean they don't care what the gamers think?

I'm not really sure how you've worked that one out? PS4 is still technically slightly more powerful, it's cheaper, it's smaller and it's already miles ahead on pre-orders. Certainly makes things more interesting though.

Because it was universally panned by gamers, if they didn't change it they wouldn't sell as many consoles. In regards to the second hand market, they were really shooting themselves in the foot if they restricted second hand games. Not everyone who buys the console can afford to continuously pay £40+ for a game they want, by cutting these gamers off you will turn most away. Again they had to cut it to almost save face.

It would appear that no-one can admit they made a mistake and move on any more without it somehow being subverted into them being selfish

When you think about it compared to the price of a Dvd or going to the movies games are generally incredibley cheap. You pay £15 for a blu ray you watch the movie 5 or 6 times maybe and enjoy it, but with games you get much more replay value and enjoyment and more work and development goes into games i think, so really £40 for a triple A title is incredibly cheap, or the price of dvds blu ray or the cinema or other media entertainment is expensive.

I think the next generation we'll see many more triple A titles pricing at around £70ish, but also many more titles for £30ish. Some games are bad £50 games at the moment but would be considered great £30 games. I think we'll see a new pricing strategy in the next gen, and have lesser developed cheaper games with a lower price point challenging triple A titles at a higher one.

Nope, both Sony and Microsoft have already confirmed that the top end pricing for games will remain at $59.99 in America for next gen titles. If you honestly believe that anyone would pay £70 for a game or that developers/publishers would be stupid enough to try and charge that much you're off your head.

Next gen games will be £44.99-49.99 over here at launch.

Ah ok thanks I'd not seen that. I still think there will be different price points for games though.

To be fair I was just being a bit silly. It certainly evens the playing field and probably ensures the dividing lines remain as they were, with Sony fans mainly buying PS4s and Microsoft fans buying the Xbox One.

For sure the thing about not trading in games or being able to sell them on came from the developers not Microsoft. All it needed was for Sony to be on board - and I'm sure that time will come - and that will become the reality of modern gaming.

Gaming will go the way of music and become pretty much dominated by downloads rather than the purchase of shiny discs. Movies are getting that way and when everyone has fibre broadband It will probably be the norm.

At the moment it's not practical.

Good comparison chart here to check out. Note that it's correct as of after the recent MS used games etc reveal.

I put it in spoiler tags because it's quite a big image.
