Xbox ONE or PS4

Announced yesterday. Anyone got some initial comments about this? Since the original Xbox I've always favoured it over the PlayStation. However, yesterday I was somewhat underwhelmed by the announcement.

Saying that, after sleeping on it and reading some more information this morning it doesn't seem too bad at all (except it's quite big!). The key will be at E3 next month when we see more about what games are on offer.

One thing that did annoy me slightly was that they didn't mention anything about games until over half an hour into the reveal yesterday. But I guess this is a sign of the changing times. It's more of a media experience now rather than solely a games console.

I didn't actually see the reveal myself as I was out, but my facebook was filled with comments both good and bad about the Xbox One. Call me a stickler for tradition, but I'm not exactly a big fan of this whole "it's a media experience now rather than a games console" as I've got enough objects that are good for the media experience, like a laptop, my phone and a TV. That's all I (and without meaning to sound big-headed) and anyone else needs for a good media experience. The whole "let's stuff all this into one device" is only to make things easier, but in reality it's not making it easier by much.

As much as I've got a small opinion of what this Xbox is gonna be like I will reserve my full judgement on it until E3 when the PS4 is revealed (which annoyingly is on the day of an exam)

There's a gap in the market for a device that accesses the internet, streams media from network devices, plays & records televison, has full HD games and plays blurays.

I know media PCs are out there but they are not cheap. The Playsattion 3 is almost there but internet compatibility is a little patchy. What we need is a PS4 running on Android with an infra red remote control, mouse and keyboard supplied as standard as well as move and game controllers. The first of the big companies to launch a console with an open source operating system which can have apps developed for it simply is onto a winner.

How much is it likely to cost when it comes out?

Good question! I reckon anything from £400 to £550, but that's a total guess.

Ive always been a playstation fan and after seeing the specs both machines are the same. Microsoft decided to elaborate more on what their console can do but i have a feeling that the big ps4 announcement will be at E3 next month. I will reserve judgement until then

I doubt I'll be getting either, always been PS - PS3 will do me for a few more years.

Didn't watch the reveal, don't think the console looks very nice

Believe I saw that it'll cost $400, so about £330.

I'll wait to see what the SteamBox has to offer I think.

Looks pretty good, undecided on what I'll buy first between it and the PS4 at the moment though.

Thank f**k we're finally moving into a new console generation though, the current hardware is so dated now it's laughable.

If it costs $400 in the US it will cost £400 in the UK regardless of the exchange rate.

I remember when the original Xbox and original Playstation came out. I wept with joy at how great the graphics were on these systems. We are spoilt now!

Our Halo limited edition halo 3 xbox (£129 from Smyths) has just started to have 'cooling issues'. I know from experience that even after taking it apart and cleaning it - it's a sign that it's on its last legs (for something that's been in use continuously since May 2008 as a gaming and media streaming device that's not bad). would replace it with the 'one' but I know the future of game and media purchases will be by cloud - something that steam does very, very well (also I love their championing of linux, umbongo!, after falling out with Microsoft). I think I'm going to wait for the steambox - but the rumoured $1K price tag is putting me off. Ok it's meant to have quite a big SSD and I imagine a very good graphics card but all this talk of "user changeability" seems to be that it's just a pricey PC.

Can we park this thread until after the play off final, why the **** is this on a football forum anyway, especially during the build up to the biggest game we are playing in years

Stop being a tool, it's in the correct area of the forum. People can concentrate on more than one thing you do realise? Sometimes a distraction is a good thing.

Yep agree. We definitely need more threads about where people are sitting, whether their tickets have arrived, which train they are getting, which songs we should sing, and which pub should we drink alone in. There hasn't been anything of note posted in the Watford section for days.

All I've heard is talk about how Microsoft are trying to strangle the used games market slightly.

Some things i am keen on. Glad it will have a blu-ray player.

However for me what is really disappointing is that it is not backward compatible. I have a rather large collection of 360 games that will end up just gathering dust as a result.

Also not sure about the voice activation thing? It sounds like kinect 2.0 will always be on even if the camera is not on and the idea creeps me out a bit.

  26. simms

Same thing happened with the last generation. For the first few months while not many new games came out it was annoying but after about a year nobody cared about backwards compatibility.

yer very true. im sure i will get over it. just have a lot of games to finish between now and when the new console comes out. i havnt even touched the mass effect trilogy yet, ive been saving that for a rainy day. ive got skyrim to finish, port royale 3, three bloody hitman games. plus plenty that i just have to accept that i may never complete lol. you never have as much time as you think. out of interest what are peoples gamerscores? mine is nearly 35000, will definitely be carrying forward my gamertag.

It will be interesting to see how used games end up when all is said and done. That seems to be the most potentially negative aspect of the new 'box. Everything else is fairly predictable. I love how some are panicking like MSFT really screwed up and no one will buy it. Gamers would make perfect stock market investors.

I honestly have no clue why...it just is the way that what costs $10 in America invariably costs £10 in Britain

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/ Kindle £69
    http://www.amazon.com/ Kindle $69

And that's on their respective home pages without me having to go searching for examples.

The US has a larger market and therfore has soem economies of scale. UK kit also generally has multi voltage power supplies and multi lingual manuals as well to cater for our friends in Euroland which explains some of the pricing difference. We are still "ripped off" to a certain extent.

  31. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Surely the multi-lingual manuals save money as rather than having to print however many different ones there is just one.

  32. hornmeister

    hornmeister Tired

Yep just 10 times the size or in some cases 10 times the manuals. I'm speaking with 10 years in the consumer electronics market. Mind you most people just supply pdfs on CD now

  33. Fitz

UK customers are not willing to demand better pricing, at least that was the thesis of a report I heard on why Bundesliga season tickets are so much cheaper than English footy season tickets.

ive read a lot of criticisms about this new xbox. however needless to say i am still quite excited for its release and will be picking one up.

the only thing that really bothers me is the lack of backwards compatibility. however my way round that is to buy no more games until this new console comes out. that way at least i can try and catch up on some of the gaming i have always wanted to do.
