not sure why people hate on halo. i thought 343 did a pretty good job with halo 4.

Because it's just not that good. It's, quite ridiculously, made out to be this incredible, boundary pushing, generation defining series and it's anything but. It's an over hyped, watered down, unoriginal, bland, FPS for kids that doesn't deserve anywhere near the critical acclaim it gets.

It doesn't hold a candle to true gaming masterpieces like Half Life 2, BioShock and even Uncharted, games that are genuinely more than just games and are exemplary from not only the gameplay aspect, but in terms of the artistic design and the originality, depth and quality of their story, characters and worlds.

i disagree. if you ask any gamer who master chief is, you will always get an answer. he falls amongst the great video game characters like mario, solid snake and sonic. to say it is not a generation defining series is simply not true. sure you don't like the series, but you certainly know about the games and the stories within.

ive played half life 2 and bioshock, and whilst i enjoyed them i have never spent literally weeks of my life playing them. that does not however not mean that they are not generation defining games, just because i do not like them? there are many people who eat, live and sleep halo and to say that as a franchise it does not deserve the acclaim it gets is in my opinion wrong.

every iteration of halo has added more features, and removed those that were unsuccessful, for example:
    - halo 2 = added dual wield and online multiplayer
    - halo 3 = added four player campaign co-op, removed dual wielding
    - halo ODST = a completely different halo experience, added firefight
    - halo reach = (in my opinion the worst of the halo series), added armour perks completely changing the way multiplayer was played
    - halo 4 = removed firefight, added spartan ops (an online co-op campaign with plenty of continually updating contact)

as for saying its unoriginal. i think thats a naive sentiment to make when you are considering any game in a series. the balance is finding the right amount of change between each new release, something that i feel bungie and now 343 have done quite well over the years.

Gotta agree with Opti. Whilst its not everyones cup of tea, the halo series was one of the reasons the Xbox got off the ground in the first place, and put it alongside the Playstation as a serious contender in the console war.

ODST remains one of my favourite ever games

Think, eventually, will end up getting the PS4. Currently got a Ps3 so I'm hardly making a switch or anything despite my housemates telling me to swap it for a 360.

I stand by everything I said. The fact that you point out mainly things related to online multiplayer for your reasoning says it all to me. The single player experience/campaign/story should always come first, and in that department there are hundreds of games far, far superior to Halo in every way.

And calling Halo unoriginal isn't "naive" in the slightest, the whole concept is the absolute definition of standard sci-fi shooter and does nothing that dozens of other games haven't already for years before it. If you honestly believe that one of the things Halo has on its side is originality then you either haven't played very many games and/or you're a bit of deluded fanboy.

nath mate, read it again. where did i say it was original? its just certainly not another sci-fi fps. all i said was they try to change things up between games as much as they can whilst sticking to the core values of the genre they are in.

why should the single player experience always come first? the majority of gamers will spend more time playing a games multiplayer mode than its singleplayer counterpart. i think we can both agree that the battlefield series is one of the best in gaming history, yet its single player storylines are absolute dog****. look at fifa the career mode is at best a training mode for going online?

you mentioned bioshock earlier. i loved that game. completed it. however all in all ive probably spent less than 20 hours of game time on that. now look at the halo series. the first halo i spent days playing multiplayer with my friends over LAN connections. halo 2 i played over 4000 matchmaking games, similar figures in halo 3. halo odst is one of the best and most underappreciated 360 games out there. reach was ok, but probably not as good as halo 4.

im not particularly sure what you don't like about the halo storyline either. its has spawned books and live action series, and possibly now a spielberg directed tv show. it is sci-fi, but that does not mean that it is like every other sci-fi game out there.

as for not playing very many games, i wish i had played less. ive got shelves and shelves of 360 games, including some i wish i kept my money in my pocket for. one thing i am most certainly not is a fanboy, but i think you've got it very wrong when your just putting halo in the realms of being another fps. it is far more than that.

Let's be fair, Master Chief is an iconic figure in the Gaming world. Halo 1 was a gaming masterpiece just like Uncharted was when it first came on the scene.

I would have put Halo in the same field as Metal Gear Solid, and latterly Uncharted. Without these games, their respective consoles aren't really that special.

Even the most hardened Xbot would find it hard to disagree with the PS3 beating a Halo-less Xbox, and and PS3 Fanboy the opposite for a MGS/Uncharted-less Playstation.

Both Consoles have their plus points, however, Xbox has historically focused on multiplayer while PS3 has focused more on single player games.

I prefer single player games and don't want to fork out for Live Gold just so I can be cussed by a 14yo Korean - that is why I prefer my PS3 to my Xbox 360. I would go so far as to say I think that the PS3 is superior to the Xbox 360.

But I can't have you say that Halo is just a run of the mill FPS. Master Chief is the Xbox, and you have to give him credit for that.

    I feel I'm missing out.

Wolfenstein was good. Doom was great, Quake gave me motion sickness and so did every other fps after that.

Tiger woods PGA tour every day fro me. Currently playing version 14 and bought all the extra courses.

This is one of the few games that actually gets played regularly on our PS3. But we use the "Golf game thingy" from Lidls and three kiddie clubs (iron, driver and putter) from sports direct.

Speaking to my Ubergeek best mate - he stared into his crystal ball (USB connected to his ZX81) and reckoned that the xbox would win this war because:

    1) He says that windows is dead. The last release made a lot of people very unhappy and as most home IT buys these days are tablets running android, he says that this will cause a free operating system such as linux to gain popularity. My own feeling is that Ubuntu is very nearly there - once you can use it without any IT knowledge it will be the dominant system - possibly in two releases time (14.04?). Microsoft's forays into the tablet and phone markets haven't been successful. All their energies will go into xbox-live marketing, tweaking and development.

    2) Discs are dead. The future will be 'cloud'. He said there very soon there isn't going to be much between speed differences between providers - so little competetion there. It will be on how much cloud space you have. He reckons the first company that offers you in excess of 1TB cloud space will be the winner. Although I think he's wrong as looking at how 'steam' works you don't require massess of storage (either on- or offline).

To say windows is dead is very silly. You could argue decline but Windows will be around in bussinessses for another 20 years at least

also cloud computer relies on decent internet connection speed. We are quite lucky locally but people who are not cabled are stuffed. My Mate lives on a brand new estate in Warrington and he only gets 700 kbs. Mobile broadband would be faster but you cant even get 3G there. Up north is like 10 years in the past.

I'm going to record this statement for potserity on my 8-track tape with a backup copy on a c15 cassette.

TBF to the ubergeek I've paraphrased our hour conversation into three words. He also believed that once someone (LibreOffice) works out all the ludicrous command statements used in "powerpoint's" code that will finally kill-off "Office's" dominance.

Perhap's you're totally wrong and business will lead the revolution that will finally kill windows: would business prefer an operating systm that costs them £0 or one that costs something very different to £0. Actually I'm waiting for the first county education authority that tells microsoft to stick it's expensive products up its ar$e as they're moving to ubuntu thus saving the council millions.

Edit: Actually, I've seen a few of these and they're not that terrible - I'm assuming they're linux/android based?

I'll be getting the PS4 for the simple fact that on the Xbox One if you don't have the internet you can't play the games. Absolutely ridiculous. And what was Microsofts response to this? If you don't have the internet stick with a 360.

I send my posts through carrier pigeon :naughty:

It's mainly for the 24 hour update thing. As a casual gamer I only play on any console a couple of times a week at best. I dont want to faff about turning the thing on every day just to play a game.

Some ISPs have a fair use policy. Unlimited internet doesn't mean unlimited bandwidth. I couldn't add gaming to my internet usage.

Another few points against Xbox One that has put me off:

The no second hand game market - they seriously have shot themselves in the foot here.

The cost - You are looking at a start up of over £469 (console and one year Xbox live gold) and that is before any games.

Power button - There isn't a power on button, you have to say "Xbox on" to turn it on, so if you get a dodgy mic you can't turn it on. It does have an off switch though.

Live doesn't hit the Asia market until 2014 - that is criminally stupid. One of the biggest markets that will be swayed to the PS4 (I know they will anyhow).

I can't see MS recovering from this one.

they will. everyone is just judging this straight off the back of e3.

in my mind I really don't care if less people buy an xbox and more plomp for a ps4. all that will happen is far more of the casual gamers and particularly younger (annoying) gamers will go for that console. I cant wait to be playing the next halo or call of duty without a lobby full of jumped up 10yr olds screaming down my ears.

xbox still has a devoted core of fans who will buy the next console.

e3 has really blown the whole thing out of proportion. btw I don't think you have to turn the console on everyday and connect to the net, only on the days you want to play games.

Apparently you are locked out of games unless you regularly "check in", it is absolutely baffling. I really wanted the X1 to be a great console but it seems crap for the lack of a better word.

It is simply illogical to buy an Xbox One at this point. Fanboy's can delude themselves and try and defend it all they want, but there is simply not one substantial area in which Microsoft is beating Sony at the moment and not one substantial reason to buy their console over PS4, whereas there are plenty to get the PS4 instead.

Make no mistake, Microsoft are in big trouble here. PS4 is starting to run away in terms of pre-orders already. People aren't stupid, they're not going to pay more for a console whereby you essentially receive less, barring a Kinect sensor that the vast majority couldn't give two sh*ts about.

I don't really use my Playstation anymore but almost every game I bought was 2nd hand. I've not an avid gamer so having a game as soon as it came out didn't really bother me. MS have ballsed up if games can't be resold.

  26. domthehornet

Same here, the games will be pushing £50 brand new and honestly I couldn't afford that on a regular basis. The only game I buy new is FIFA everything else is virtually second hand.

I wouldn't mind shelling out a little more for a new game if the cost wasn't so high. But being able to get a game for half and sometimes a quarter or less of its new value is ridiculous.
Developers have been too quick to blame the market for encouraging used games sales when they should look at themselves and how theyve priced themselves out of it. I can't remember the last time i bought a game new.

As I've said before ill absolutely reserve judgement until the consoles are out for a while, but if the used game stuff is how its being portrayed, then I don't see how anyone on a budget could buy an Xbox.

  28. Optimistichornet

i think many people like me are just waiting to pre-order. all of the people i play with regularly are all sticking with xbox.

personally i have no problem with any of the changes they are proposing, but i resent being called a fanboy. microsoft may not get as many pre-releases as sony, but when push comes to shove at the end of the day they will still sell consoles.

anyway my reason for sticking with xbox is simply that i feel the xbox exclusive games look better. the only game that interests me on the ps4 is Tom Clancys division. apart from that there is nothing that stands out there to me. gran turismo is always a good game, but no better than forza.

If xbox live knock the prices down on older games in the market place they might save themselves but at the moment it isnt looking good. I will get a ps4 in 2015 probably.

Fantastic news as I have no plans on upgrading my 360 any time soon. Plus my copy of Halo 3 got really badly laser burned a while ago so I'm pretty psyked they're giving them away for freaking free.

Don't see the point of a new 360 console though. It's gonna go all Osborne effecty and not sell at all.

From my understanding it just means that to play a game you have to have had the xbox connected to the internet in the last 24 hours, and the 24 hours hasnt even been decided it's just a guess.

So the only time its and issue is if you go to play it whne you have been on the xbox for x amount of time AND your internet is currently down. How often does that happen? dependds on your internet I suppose.

  34. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

More to the point why wouldn't you want it connected to the internet? This is the bloody 21st century - in 10 years time our microwaves will probably have to be connected to it, let alone a games console.

  35. NathWFC

    NathWFC First Team

I think people's problem with it is pretty obvious and simple - there will be plenty of gamers who at some point their internet will be down for a day or two, for them not to be able to play games at all in that time is ridiculous. Also people moving house may not always have internet for the first couple of weeks, rendering their Xbox One useless.
