It has seemed that the club has been interested in doing some sort of player swap for Hughes (reports re Hughes-Hayden and Hughes-Lemina swaps). I wonder if a swap for Marvellous Nakamba - who is exactly the sort of physical ballwinner we're supposedly looking for, might make sense. Alternatively, Morgan Sanson for one of the 8 roles given that he never really broke into the side since joining in Jan.

I'm of the opinion that like many players that start playing the game young, Hughes has plateaued as a player. His raw ability is clear to see, but would you say he's a better footballer now than when he joined?

Still plenty of time for him to grow as a player, but I doubt I'll be proved wrong

 

Well, of course I mean the deepest of the three midfielders, but you're right that it used to refer to one of the centre-backs! Did this change, or am I wrong lol

This is my biggest issue with him. Clearly a talented player but I always think he can do more - because I know he has the ability. I just don't think he's ever going to realise his full potential with us....and I expect thats what is driving his behaviour this summer. Whether he goes elsewhere and steps his game up a gear, Jurys out. But he can do it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want him to leave. I just don't think it would be an instant disaster if he did. But we MUST replace him adequately and not with some guff like Longstaff or Hayden.

The player Will Hughes CAN be would be very hard for a club of our size and financial limitations to replace - but also, the player Will Hughes often is? I think there's likely players out there who are attainable who can do that job.

 

Well he's 26 years old and has been playing for more or less a decade (even with some rather serious injury problems, he's played more career games than 30 year old Kabasele), so I agree that he isn't going to get any better. Some of it might be that he's been playing for a while, but while he's been here, in his first year he had injury issues (but was bright enough when he played), in his second year he was dilligent in an unfamiliar position on the left, in his third season he finished very strongly, and in his fourth season (albeit in the Championship), when he got over the injury he flourished in yet another role. He's played in a lot of roles while he's been here, and done well, although maybe not as well in one role as people thought he'd do when he was at Derby

He played there for one match last season... Birmingham or Forest at home? Around that period of the season anyway and he was surprisingly comfortable.

 

He was in the midfield against Forest, I thought he was further back than the #10 role though? Played alright that day, wasn't at his most dangerous but worked hard for the team

Unfortunately not. My sources tell me that he hangs around in the gym all day with headphones in not talking to anyone. Then once a day he'll go and drop hell in Gino's personal bathroom.

 

I actually thought he was at his best under Gracia on the left. He was able to drift inside a lot and take up positions where he could create chances.

Ultimately he's too slow to occupy any position other than central mid, and even there you probably favour a player with more pace

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for him to stay, but I think maybe leaving is the best move for his career
