It was one of many bad decisions, along with not retaining Chalobah at the same time. But the nature of it, treating Hughes with utter contempt and freezing him out, stank.

I don't think it was much of a decision? Hughes wanted to leave.

Even by saying "several people" I think you're exaggerating - the vast majority of posters were very sceptical about the signing of Kucka:

Whilst I completely understand his sentiment I do so dislike this modern method of broadcasting it to the world.
Makes Hughes look poor to me,not as poor as how the club have handled the episode but why stoop to their level?
As a Middlesex player formerly of Hertfordshire I loved beating them but I didn't run around with 'I hate Hertfordshire' crayoned on my Middlesex kit.
All very distasteful from both sides.

Many were quite comfortable for him to leave and supported Pozzo’s approach.

You yourself have tied yourself in a number of knots over the situation over the months despite him being far superior to our current midfield options.

Hughes wanted to leave, again I'm not sure the Pozzos had too much else they could do with that.

As for your second comment, I was very critical of our signing of Kucka and you even 'liked' my post about it:
    https://wfcforums.com/index.php?threads/juraj-kucka.58586/page-4#post-3030580

I was also sceptical about Tufan, and was one of the very few on here who didn't think that Louza would be an adequate replacement for our midfield right now.

The only one of our midfield signings I was hopeful about was Etebo, and he started off very well before getting injured.

There are no "knots" or contradictions in one the one hand not being too bothered about Hughes leaving and also thinking that we wouldn't have been able to keep him anyway, and on the other hand thinking we could and should have made better signings to replace him.

Your glee at Hughes not being picked initially for Palace and how he was no loss are well documented. You’re not rewriting history on this one.

Lol, where in my comment have I even denied that?

I'm pointing out that the view is not inconsistent with recognising we couldn't have kept him anyway, and we generally could and should have made better signings in his place.

Not really sure why you go involved at all to be honest! I made a comment about another poster and you jumped in and made it about yourself. Me, me, me!!

I got involved because it appeared you were trying to make out that it was somehow remarkable you'd argued that Kucka wouldn't be a good signing, while I've pointed out that most on here actually thought the same.

It was actually you how dragged the discussion out and made it about me by simply refusing to acknowledge my simple point above, then making the claim I'd been supposedly tying myself in "knots". Obviously if you make such a false accusation I'll reply with what I said, so you only have yourself to blame on that front.

We would have gone down with Hughes & Chalo & Gosling but instead have gone down with Kucka, Tufan, Sissoko and Louza instead, and a lighter wallet.

I’m sure you can find plenty of choice quotes on the Villa opening day thread of people praising the new midfield and talking down Hughes.

The knots were your own doing about Hughes individually (and you know it).

Anyway doesn’t seem a very interesting topic so I’ll let you have the last word as you always always must……..

As I've clearly explained to you numerous times above, there are no "knots".

    I agree, it's not.

Losing the whole spine of the promotion side was ridiculous. No team chemistry at all and we basically swapped 3 in their prime midfielders for 2 over 30s journeymen and a non-experienced, not ready, player. I like Louza, but he should have been in addition to what we had, not a replacement.

Retaining the likes of Sema & Cathcart who couldn’t get a game in the championship to starting for us in the PL is just another example of WTF decision making from the powers above.

While it's a fair opinion to say Hughes is better than Kucka, I'd have a tentative guess that Kucka has had more 'good' performances for an awful Watford side this season than Hughes has had for a decent Palace side.

Louza I would say definitely has, and if Palace offered a swap deal tomorrow it would be a resounding no from me.

I guess unless you know Hughes or his agent/someone at the club the saga will divide people and there will be different view points.

He certainly would've had added some creativity to our midfield though although probably a few more injuries and knocks too!

I think the info from @Burnsy was that we could’ve kept him but he only wanted a 3 year deal, Gino wanted him to sign a 5 year deal. If we’d conceded on the deal length he would’ve stayed.

Instead Gino chucked his toys out of the pram and we ended up in an all round worse position. Another example of clearly poor and obvious bad decision making, not driven in any way by being a poor club in PL terms, just by stubbornness.

Good grief. If that is true Gino is an absolute idiot.

I know Hughes has (unsurprisingly) been in and out of the Palace team, but I don't know how good his performances have been. Kucka, I would say, has had zero good 90 minute performances, although he has had good spells in a handful of games. The trouble is a player who cannot last 90 minutes (and we have more than one) is a liability rather than an asset because of the unnecessary substitution they always require.

Seems like Hughes had an impressive few games and I think won Palace's POTM, but apart from that he's been pretty average, or not used at all.

Don't disagree on Kucka, but I do think a good 70 minute performance still deserves to be credited as a 'good game' and the blame lies with the manager for not making the change

My argument on Kucka is that, having only limited substitutes, if one is always taken up replacing a certain player who can’t last the whole game then your options are limited.

Probably better than playing him the whole game as we've repeatedly done though! 22 starts, played 90 minutes in 16 of them despite blowing out of his arse!

Just come out and say what you're thinking Will, it would not only be quite interesting to hear what he thinks about our shambles and club, but would be better than implying things. Which is I assume what he is doing here...maybe.

The guy left us a year ago. Since then, we've had three managers, been relegated in one of the ten worst Premier League seasons in history, and generally been a mess on and off the pitch.

In the meantime he's finished in 12th place at a club that seems to be well run, with a manager who actually lasted a year in the job, and posted a tweet about it.

Will Hughes is not the problem here. Our own club is.

I presume the post isn't even about us, as much as some self indulgent fans on Twitter wish it was.

Although, in the unlikely scenario that he is having a pop at our club's hierarchy - he's not wrong.
