Why do both neither Hughes or Foster have the sponsor on their training kit, yet in the next scene with Sarr and Foster together, they both have the sponsor on their training kit? Edited in to appease the fans despite being filmed weeks ago?

 

Keep him at the club on lower wages for a year. He will be highly motivated to earn a largish contract at the end of the season, and we get a motivated player for a season

 

That's a good spot there, could fuel the conspiracy theories a bit, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'm sure there is a lot more to these videos he puts out than meets the eye. Things are probably more staged at certain points than we might assume.

 

This is an interesting spot but later in the video Foster is wearing the white training top without a sponsor. It could be something more innocuous like Foster has a certain number of tops he wears on rotation and some have the sponsor on and some don’t.

 

Maybe he feels he's plateaued because he needs better players around him ?

I’m not sure that’s a given at all. He’ll be able to pre-sign for free with someone in January and get a huge signing on fee irrespective of wages. Surely better to get something for him now and get someone in who is actually motivated to play for us, rather than money. If if we could only sell him for £5m, if we don’t, then he will be able to demand that £5m as a signing on fee with another club. I’d say that would be the opposite of motivating for him, especially if he does actually do that in January and knows he’s got a ton of cash coming his way in the following summer, while he’s being paid a relative pittance by us. Basically it’s a recipe for disaster. In fact in terms of money Hughes is better off letting his contract down and not signing for a new club now, but it would mean more or less writing a season of his career off.

Let’s not also forget the reason players don’t always let their contracts down despite the obvious financial rewards, the massive risk of doing so is sustaining a serious injury in that last year, another reason why keeping him is a bad idea as he won’t want to risk that happening which will likely be reflected in his attitude and performances.

 

Good luck to him. This'll be two seasons in a row of him being touted to clubs but no one seems to take the price we want. Such a sad state our midfield ended up. Capoue - wantaway Pereyra - downed tools Doucoure - bit of both Delefeou - wantaway now Hughes too.

 

Nonsense, when he had better players around him like Capoue, Doucoure and Deulofeu he was still our worst midfielder.

 

I will give it ten games to see how we get on as usual. I am down to about half a toss though.

 

Yep, we have bought so many players I've never heard of that I still have some hope that they will all turn out to be ace, but it just feels different from the last time we went up.

The Hughes situation is likely to play out in two ways. More than one club are interested in him so there's a bit of a bidding war and we get the fee we want. That's the ideal scenario. What's more likely is that no one sees him as a vital cog or are willing to stump up £12m. Sure, he'll be an asset as a squad player for most teams, but not for £12m. They would be happy to see him run his contract down then get him on a free next season, which I think is the most likely outcome.

The club are in a difficult position with him. He's unlikely to sign a new contract now, even if no one comes in for him. He'll be happy to run his contract down and go for the best deal as a free agent next season. The way it stands he's technically a Watford player, but will not be used as such. We'll move on. So unless something changes I don't think we'll use him even if he's not sold in this window. We'll have him as an emergency player if we get a lot of injuries.

So, therefore, we need to sign two new midfielders and accept Hughes will go on a free next season, and only use him if we need to. We need players who are totally committed to the cause. I have no issues with Hughes, it's just a shame the way it's all worked out.

 

Why is £12m the fee we want? Seems overpriced to me. If we can get £6m and get him off the wage bill for the season (that's got to be worth another £1m at least) then I think that'd be a good deal for a player who could go for zero next summer.

Yes. The issue is that until we know whet fee we will get, we don't know how much we have to spend on the replacement(s).

 

We'll be extremely lucky to get £8m for him. Probably £10m for Hughes and Chalobah. Nobody is paying more than a couple of million for Chalobah with his contract situation and knee.

 

I think you're probably right with your estimations. Nate out again with some kind of injury. Personally I've always liked Will but always wanted more from him. But both are replaceable and hope it gets sorted sooner than later.

 

I think in your second ‘outcome’ we’d more than likely do a ‘Capoue’ - reintroduce him after he fails to move, he gets on the bench and the odd cameo and then gets a cut-price January move.

 

Would I back Hughes to put in more of a shift than Capoue did in his cameos last season? Probably

 

I reckon we should sell him to a club in UAE or Qatar just to watch him shrivel and burn to the size of a bag of Frazzles.

 

A half-arsed Capoue is still better than a full-pelt Hughes.

Capoue was shockingly under rated by the football world in general

 

Capoue put in some great displays for us in the Championship, especially his final game against Norwich, but he dropped some absolute stinkers too, I hope Hughes wouldn't play anywhere near as badly as Capoue did against Huddersfield and QPR!

If he stays and runs down his contract he won’t want to risk injury, so you have to factor that into his expected level of performance.

Honestly not sure. This potential friendly with Arsenal (don’t know if it’s been confirmed or denied, haven’t looked) tomorrow has thrown me off. Originally it seemed as if this game would be like the others, mix of first team and u23’s.
