No, he was signed as Buckley's replacement on the wing, if we try to get away with passing him off as our new left back I'll be extremely p*ssed off.

lee naylor or whoever that cardiff left back is... Mackay has now pretty much signed Taylor so naylor would be out off favour, Cant be to bad surely? I no buckley ripped him to shreds but did many other players do the same?

 

We need a long term solution at left back so we don't end up back in this ridiculous situation we've been in for years now with this left back issue this time next season, not some 31 year old Mackay reject.

He has gone to Charlton because they are a bigger club than us despite being a division below.

I don't think wages were the main reason for him not coming to us. Charlton have substantial financial backers and are a team on the up. He may prefer a chance of winning something (albeit only the first division) rather than face a battle against relegation with us.

I've been so between minds on this deal; there's no doubting we need a left back but when enquiring about the guy not all was positive. My friend works for a league 1 side (who we face in pre season) and provides them with feedback on an opposition's strengths and weaknesses. He was all for Wiggins as am attacking wing back when not so heavily relied upon for his defensive reponsibilities, but when at full back, he was a man they wanted to target due to his lack of strength, stature and general defensive know how. In fact, he was a target area for them to exploit as defensively he could be 'got at'.

Whilst we're discussing our full back options, it was interesting meeting with my friend prior to a game we had against his side a couple of years ago when they were in the championship. He came running across the pitch to meet me at the front of the rookery and when i asked what their 'tactic' was against us, it was to target our full backs, who were Doyley and Stewart at the time. It just made me realise that not only a loyal Watford fan realises that if Doyley is put under pressure and targetted, then chaos will follow!! I doubt much has changed when it comes to opposition looking for our weaknesses since.....

It had crossed my mind that what we need is not an attacking left wing back, but a solid defensive left back, and what your friend has said has convinced me of that!!! We also need a solid defensive right back IMO!!!

I believe the only way we should consider attacking wing backs is in a formation based on three centre backs.

at the end of the day good or not we should not be losing out to a league 1 club for a player. Maybe it was a bad idea to have offered him a packet of steak and onion crisps and £10.00 per week. He might have been a salt and vinegar man

 

No not brilliant but flip that over. Charlton may be a league 1 side but I think they are still a bigger side than us. You ask Joe Bloggs on the street whos bigger, they'll pick Charlton. Better stadium, higher crowds and a better infrastructure.

Having said that, I still believe Wiggins went for the money

Did it occur to any of you that we didn't value his abilities as highly as Charlton. He is an unknown quantity in our league and perhaps we didn't want to spend that much for a player who may not be first choice at left back.

It could also be down to his personality - choosing a league he knows rather than wanting to make the step up suggests he is afraid of the challenge. Afraid he'll fail.

I agree with the general sentiment that he went for the money but the reason there were more money at CACF may ave been more than just us being skint.
