Gosh, you mean managers who had Richarlison and Delofeu did better than the one with Kenedy and Jerome Sinclair?

    I'm shocked!!

So what did your ‘rest is history’ comment mean? If it’s all about the players, the manager is next to irrelevant.

He did an OK job with admittedly limited resources, nothing more. Barring that Arsenal result, that is.

The 4-2 win at West Ham (West Ham's first league defeat at their new stadium) and the 3-1 win over Manchester United were pretty good too.

The 1-0 win at Middlesbrough was one of the most boring victories I've ever seen. We beat Hull 1-0 at home without having a shot on target, if I recall. (Michael Dawson own goal).

OK, I will concede the West Ham result, yes.

If we are talking about managers who could have turned the tide of our history had things been different then I am afraid I think it was Silva, not Walt.

History has shown our entire premier league run was built on the hard work and squad building of this man

I loved Silva but if Mazzarri had Silva's squad (apart from Deeney, who he would have got rid of by then) we'd have got European football. I truly believe it.

He'd have used his contacts to replace Deeney with some Italian thoroughbred.

Though to be fair, I think we would have got European football had Silva stayed too.

That Hull game was Amrabat’s finest hour. Had the full back on toast, often by being allowed to foul him every attack!

Agree that Silva was potentially as good, although he has a much worse CV at the top end.

Before the players downed tools to sack him, Walt got the results despite actively trying to reform our squad and culture, which is far more tricky.

The next managers partly benefited from the strict discipline changes introduced by Walt, but we certainly would have been in a better position long term if we backed him, insisted on discipline and removed those who were being obstructive, Fergie style.

Sacking him was the day the club truly waved the white flag to player power, and to the fans that see our managers as a weird Freudian father figure who felt shunned/ unloved due to the language barrier.

I can't believe how spot on your are.

It was also the day the club started panic-picking our managers. Even though I liked Silva, it was a huge departure from their usual methods.

I truly believe that the sacking of Mazzarri spelled the beginning of the end for us.

You don't think communication with players and fans is of any importance then? Bearing in mind also that there was no communication from the owner.

Don't think that was why he was sacked, mind.

I think Walt was sacked purely on the same sort of basis Ivic was. As RC said, player power took over and 'Mr. Invincible' from being dropped piped up. I think it was also around that time the players (we had then) began to see what a soft touch Gino was, and took full advantage.

I'm not sure Mazzarri understood Pozzo's north-eastern dialect...

I personally couldn’t care less. That’s what translators are for. It’s a nice to have, but far less important than tactical acumen, an experienced CV with plenty of evidence of success and someone who isn’t afraid to make difficult but necessary changes.

To me, the job is about performance. Numerous managers have performed well in the PL without knowing the language. Walt was performing well.

If he sucked up to those looking for an easy life, smiled like a buffoon and said how much he loved Watford, he’d still have been our manager, despite there being far less justification to keep him.

Have many managers performed well in the PL without seemingly making any effort to learn the language at all? I can't think of many.

I don't disagree that results were ultimately more important. But I always wondered whether he was genuinely committed to the club, or even being in England at all, in view of this.

Surely it's easier to build and maintain relationships if you have a good command of the language though, which is obviously where Wally fell down

Apparently he had been taking English classes before he arrived, now I know it's harder to pick up languages when you're older, but I doubt he put much effort in! I remember there was a time in the second half of the season where he was forced to give an interview in English to the Beeb, to the surprise of nobody it went badly

How many languages can all his critics speak I wonder?

Most of you people can barely type legible english. I can only imagine how poor your speech is.

I strongly suspect the woman with the placard was not multilingual. Possibly not monolingual.

Me speaky Italino, so Walt should learn English. At moment like this I always think of that old Italian saying - when is a your dolmio day?

Dunno about the tactical side of things, but he's proven very bad at the financial side!
