This guys wages will be fun at 36 in the Championship next season. I'd love to know what the **** "the model" actually consists of now.

It's never really consisted of anything specific or obvious, not for a long time at least, anyway.

We've been scattergunning our signings for years. Signing piles of random ***** and giving OAP's hilariously long contracts.

    It really is a mess.

I think Gino has got bored with running a football club, so just buys random players in order to troll people who spend their free time getting irate on football forums about things they have no control over .

'The model' amounts to a good scouting system, and that's about it, everything else is just hit and hope

The model is occasionally signing a Richarlison or Joao Pedro so everyone can milk themselves over the fantastic Pozzo scouting network. Of course it used to be incredible back in the day, the players they found for Udinese were amazing. But today 90% of the time it serves no purpose as we pick up any old **** from around Europe or sign players as favours for Gino's agent mates, whether they fit the squad or not.

The ‘model’ is all over the place, at his age we’re just paying a glorified loan fee for him, he will have zero resale value so his wages and transfer fee are just a seasons loan fee. Yes, we may be skint but we let promising young players who are relatively cheap and who have incredible upside pass us by so we can stockpile rubbish, which is individually relatively cheap, but collectively adds up to a lot without having any real upside value or potential in the future.

I swear if you actually said to Gino you’ve got two options, sign this player for £10m and he’ll be worth £30m in two years, or sign this player for £2m but he’ll be worth £5m at most, he’d go with the second option every time.

  11. The model is to assemble the most competitive squad possible with one of the smallest budgets in the PL

If you like you can blame our fanbase for refusing to allow the club to grow revenue by moving from the vic

It's probably too soon to say it's a write off but you'd have to say support on here and other social media for the prospect of moving was lukewarm at best. Far too many people happy to settle with what we've got.

  14. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

That’s as maybe, but would that not be more or less the same for any football club? Clubs like West Ham etc? What makes Watford so different that our support is so much more against moving ground compared to any other club, that it would prevent us moving? I think like any club the owners would do it if they wanted to and it was viable, there will always be people against it.

As far as I can see we only have 4 fit CM's right now, we urgently need midfielders to arrive in time for next weekend.

Kucka is a decent player, if he can still run then it's a useful addition for a season.

Quina and TDB clearly not ready for the Prem either. All parties would benefit from those 2 going out on loan and playing regularly.

Very hard to find that player nailed on to treble his value. Fact is though, we have found young players whose value increased, Lukebakio, Suarez, Estupinan and let’s not pretend people were happy when that value was realised.

You could say Matt Grimes is such a player whose value could increase. Trouble is Swansea haven’t found a buyer at a high price and he’s not at the level Kucka is. We need someone for next week as well as the future.

Presumably there is a relegation clause, the like of which Hughes won’t entertain.

If we are relegated he’d be odds on to leave.

Well, yes but also a budget that has been hamstrung by several really bad decisions piled on top of each other. If our finances are as bad as it seems then this summer's approach seems sensible rather than betting the house on staying up or taking risks with signings. We can't afford to pay £10m+ for an Oulare or Berghuis to sit on the bench, or a loan fee and wages for a Diamanti and Ibarbo. Those four players contributed nothing when we went up last time. Despite five years in the Premier League with all the TV cash, we're trying to get ourselves out of a financial straitjacket.

As i've said from the start of the summer, if Chalobah & Hughes opted against signing a new deal I would let them walkaway for nothing next summer and pocket the £150m or whatever it is for staying in the Prem.

Let's face it, we will be luck to get £10m combined for both at this point, so is it worth selling them now or using them for 12 months?

Question - when will Quina be ready? He was good in the PL when he first broke through and has also had 6 months in La Liga? Maybe we need to stop treating our young players with kid gloves and putting obstacles in their way?

I can tell you now, Quina will not want to be ‘loaned’ out again and with the time left on his deal (1yr) he would very likely be sold as he is extremely unlikely to sign a new deal obviously if he won’t be playing here. He’s said that himself pretty much. Rightly or wrongly, bringing this 34yr old in blocks his pathway to the first team….which completely contradicts what Duxbury said would happen.

Yes but keeping Hughes and Chalobah doesn't guarantee we stay up. Getting relegated and letting them walk for free would be madness. Etebo is better than Chalobah, I'm just putting it out there. Then if we can somehow do a deal for Yokuslu then there's the Hughes replacement.

We are also strengthening our relegation rivals by letting Chalobah & Hughes go now (let's face it, they won't end up at a top half prem side).

Maybe, maybe not. History pretty much tells us that one if not both will pick up injuries along the way. Infact Nate is currently out with something now supposedly.

Personally I don't think either strengthen a relegation rival enough for us to worry about it. I'm actually struggling to think of many teams they'd start for which is backed up by the lack of interest in them.

Im not massively fussed about Chalobah really. He has played well for about 4 months over the last 4 years and Etebo may well be equally / more capable than him.

Personally think Hughes would be a big miss. He may not be a top PL player, but I would still say he is the best and most consistent player in our squad after Sarr. He has shown himself to be solid at PL level in a way that others like Kiko and Masina failed to do.

Yokuslu would be a good signing and may well be enough, but the squad is still worse off for losing Will given we will be a position where Clevs and Gosling are likely to be getting not infrequent game time.

Are they going to play him as the advanced midfielder. So my father in law has just told me he was playing this position for Parma in the run in of Serie A. He seems to think we've got a decent option because he said he's very athletic, still for his age. Time will tell I suppose.

  29. HeiaWatford

Fair enough but I just want him gone. He doesn't want to be here so we should shift him asap. We need players who want to be at the club end of.

Unpopular opinion - but I’m going to give him a chance to see what he can do before deciding if this is a good, bad or average signing!

I find it bizarre how much some of our fans overrate Hughes and Chalobah. Hughes is lower standard prem player at best, good technical ability but slow and don't assist nor score too often. Chalobah has never really done well in the Premier League with the exception of a a handful of games under Silva. People must be forgetting that he struggled in the Championship for half of our games last campaign.

I think people are underestimating Will Hughes as a coping mechanism for his inevitable departure.

Kiko recently said Hughes is the best player he's played with at Watford, ahead of Deulofeu. His game may be simple but he is the key component in Xisco's 4-3-3.

We have hard-working midfielders but we need one with discipline and reliability. I think Yokuslu is that man - but we're going to haggle over half a mil and get some inadequate freebie instead.

Quite frankly if Kiko said this he is chatting ****. Hughes is not anywhere the level of Capoue or Doucoure. He id a good passer and puts himself about but of we are truly honest he don't score enough goals, he don't assist enough goals and his physicality isn't great and he is extremely slow.

The stats don’t lie do they? Chalobah had a handful of games where he was effective in the premier league, then got injured and was anonymous for over 2 years after that. He was then crap in the championship for half a season, then really good… but it’s the championship not the premier league. Hughes looked great in the championship last year, but again it’s the championship. The rest of the time he’s flattered to deceive in the premier league for large parts of his time with us. No other club has ever shown an interest in buying them, even now when they’re available for a bargain price - nobody actually wants them. Why? Because they’re lower PL/upper championship players, and neither have ever really demonstrated they’re anything better than that aside from probably about 10 games between them in 5 years.

I think people get caught up in what they think their potential could be, despite them never getting near it for any length of time over the course of several seasons.
