They've poached him and Tom Bodell from the Observer, and also have the Editor of The Golden Pages writing for them too. WDSport going all out to crush the competition!

I don't blame Berghuis for feeling like this. Sounds like he 's suffered the footballing version of being mis-sold PPI.

He should have got off his ar.se and worked harder.

He wasn't missold anything - the team lined up 4-5-1 v Everton and then in the following weeks looked like it would never score a goal again. Quique made do and the rest is history. Had Berghuis been a force he would have played. As it was, had he played regularly we'd probably have done quite badly.

Hopefully he can show that potential now, but early doors he looked a small fish in a big pond.

It can hardly have benefitted him to be completely shut out in the cold. To be not even in the matchday squad, which was bereft of attacking substitutes. To sit on the sidelines watching our attackers lose form and misfire, but see the head coach stubbornly refuse to look to alternatives. To not be given a chance in a team who have more chance of making cold fusion than scoring twice in a game these days.

Quique's handling of fringe players has been terrible and shows a lack of peripheral vision. Using players from the bench to keep them interested, fit and to have a chance to prove themselves, whilst giving our opponents something else to think about is just not Quique's MO though. Better to focus on changes at right back and make that the only position you frequently rotate.

Also, QSF is particularly good at not "rotating" players, out of form, so they dont lose too much confidence, but "rotating" players after a good game, to stop them getting too confident.

    It is an art.

Me too, but the tone of his article will almost certainly lead to him being banished back to oblivion by QSF....

Same end product as Wooter, but without the kitman having to get involved. Send him to Granada for next year

As I said on a twitter post, the minutes he has had he has shown fark all, to all of a sudden people saying he should be playing.
Maybe he should have been given more time, maybe he should play in the coming games, but don't make him out to be some wonderful player that we haven't played.

Think we should start him for the remaining games to see what he has got and whether he is worth keeping for next season.

I don't think anyone has said he's Messi have they? Just that he was one of our better players at West Ham and we'd like to see what he can do for 90 minutes.

  11. He was good against West Ham; looks like he's beefed up a bit. Give him a decent go at least in these last few games.

I think people just want him to be given a chance bearing in mind the quality of our recent attacking football. It must be hard for some of the fringe players like Berghuis - he's had 120 minutes in the Premier League spread over 6 appearances. Granted, up until West Ham he hadn't shown much quality but all his appearances were so short he didn't have much of an opportunity. It must be frustrating to watch Jurado being given chance after chance and only having a decent half hour once in every five or six games. When it gets to the point where the whole team looks completely disjointed going forward, it's understandable that fans want to give some other players a go. We simply couldn't be any worse attacking - 9 goals in our last 15 Premier League games says it all.

    El distraído Johnny Foreigner

    Who's said that?

All I've said is that he played well against West Ham, did well with regards to his set pieces and deserves a chance to play, especially seeing as our forward play these last few months has been so dreadful.

I feel sorry for Berghuis. Love his passion to want to play more football! He has suffered due to QSF's defensive stance, but then that's probably something we needed to do in order to be in a position to retain our Premiership Status.

Now that's all but been achieved, he HAS to start him against Villa to give him an opportunity in an attacking format. In fact, I would like to see Amrabat and Berghuis either side of Deeney. Can't imagine ighalo will play this weekend due to personal reasons? Suarez to start alongside Watson and Behrami in the middle.

I think Berghuis has a lot of ability, has nice quick feet and a good footballing brain. Looks to me to be like most wingers and be very much a confidence player, perhaps why we've not see in him in full flight yet? Either way, we can't keep persisting with central playmakers outwide. We were always going to get f**ked by Palace due to their pace and width, two things we don't have because QSF doesn't utilise our wide men.

  15. Moose

    Moose First Team Captain

And that's fine, except people are implying that QSF has overlooked his talents. Anyone who saw him early in the season would be clear that he was not ready to be a defining player. QSF could be praised for getting him to this point over the last six months esp as the player's attitude hasn't always seemed nailed on.

  16. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

There's middle ground between being a not defining player and being marginalised. As I say, appearances from the bench should have been higher in a team which is absolute dogfuk going forwards and bereft of attacking alternatives.

  17. Moose

    Moose First Team Captain

Why? Because he finally had a good 10 minutes? QSF sees them in training all the time and managed Aguerro. Do you think your view of Berghuis's readiness trumps his?

You are confusing the issues. Whatever our problems were going forward SB wasn't the answer when they began. If he is now, then well done the coaching.

  18. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

Yes I do. Because Berghuis is better than nothing which is what that alternative option on the bench has been many times this season

When he came on at WHU he initially went central where he found some space and moved the ball well and I thought looked a threat .Deeney then came on and he went out wide right and went missing for what was left of the game.
I would give him a start in a roaming role against Villa where he should find room to both feed Deeney and Iggy and hopefully feed off them and have a few efforts on goal.If it doesn't work out revert back to Jurado who we know cannot score a goal for toffee.

  20. Moose

    Moose First Team Captain

I'm not sure that makes sense, making the team weaker somehow makes it stronger. Lots of ways to change a game other than putting on a weak forward, for example put on another central defender and push the full backs right up. And yeah I know QSF didn't do that either...

I say bring Anya on at right back when we need a goal.

I thought he was absolutely brilliant today. Direct, can beat a man, and has a magic left foot. He should start every game until the end of the season now, but knowing QSF he'll be on the bench next match.

  24. Do you understand how it can make a team stronger now?

Was very impressed with young Steven today. Looked to beat players, get crosses in, and showed great passion. Nowhere near the finished article yet, but will only gain confidence, and experience if allowed to start the next three games. He wont!

After that display, QSF will probably leave him out of the squad altogether. But don't worry Jurado will still be in the side......

Wait until he gives the ball away a few times against Liverpool without getting any assists and goes back to being a complete waste of money again.

Don't think he passed it backwards once. Lovely skill followed by a brilliant diagonal to Troy and then his cross for Troy's first... :love2:

Even if you ignore the assist Berghuis contributed today, the bit which stood out was that he was positive, looked to get the ball forward, but didn't do so aimlessly. He kept his head up and looked for the right pass instead of just lumping it forward and hoping. He completely deserves to start next game.

I think Suarez also looked a much better player after SB came on. Having options to play forwards instead of sideways/backwards made a world of difference. I think Suarez will prove a quality acquisition if we can get some movement around him on a regular basis.

Suarez is a quality player as is Amrabat. They have the technical ability and nowse. Unfortunately some of the players around them are not on the same level and fail to provide options by moving and creating space or targets to pass too. Several times Suarez has shown he has the intelligence to pick an incisive pass that no one else seems to read having played with a higher standard of players and management at Atletico. Ighalo if he had bothered lookig up in the first half yesterday should have picked out Mario completely unmarked hands up asking for the ball.

Granted both acquisitions will need time to get used to the pace of the league. I think we should give them both time to settle for next season when they should be fully up to speed. As for Berghuis he also contributed two searching crosses against West Ham and should have started yesterday and come on at Wembley. He certainly has been in the gym, is fresh at this time of the season and the ability is there. He should be retained for next season and continue to develop.

I disagree. If Amrabat and Suarez are so good, why are they not leading the creativity rather than waiting for lesser players to get into the right positions. Some of Suarez's distribution yesterday was appalling, even many simple passes.

  33. Hornet23

He had a pass completion of 88%, I'd say that's pretty good. The whole team have surprisingly good stats for pass completion yesterday which shocked me because a lot of the time we seemed to give it away cheaply. Suarez was the one who took charge yesterday and kept supplying the guys out wide. I don't know why he's getting so much hate. Technically he's fantastic and I think he'd be better with an attacking player alongside him rather than him doing it as I always had him down as a player who does the screening in front of the defence. Could be wrong though.

I'd expect him to have a higher pass completion % with all those short sideways passes!

It was so painful yesterday repeatedly watching Jurado cut back inside (don't blame him though as he's played out of position), sideways pass to Suarez, another sideways pass to Parades, who then loses the ball.

  35. Hornet23

So why don't you blame Jurado for sideways passes when his job is to create but blame Suarez for the exactly same thing who is a holding midfielder?? I like Jurado but he had a stinker yesterday. Straight down the tunnel when he went off and I don't think he'll be staying when Quique leaves either.
