The lack of Berghuis under QSF is a bit of a mystery. From what he showed in the last 5 games of the season, Bergy ought to have been having much more of a run out than he got and his complaints have some justification. He's looked a very exciting player and can certainly pick out a cross.

What didn't QSF like about him? I don't suppose we'll ever know. Now Berghuis says:- "I no longer felt sorry for myself, but I feel like a footballer again and I want to hold onto that feeling"

I hope Wally will want him and be able to get the best out of what could be a real gem in the team for us I reckon.

QSF was crapping on about Penarenda needing to understand his defensive role so I'm sure it was the same issue with Berghuis. He simply lost a year of his career by us having a one dimensional defensive coach who wouldn't even risk an offensive option on the bench and would prefer 3 full backs.

Can't lay the blame on QSF entirely for that (fashionable though it seems to be on here), if Berghuis was really unhappy about the lack of first team opportunities he could have looked for another club in January and thus salvaged the remaining half of that year.

How do you know that he didn't seek a loan move? It's surely indisputable that a coach with a preference for 2/3 full backs on the bench isn't going to be good for offensive players who QSF deems isn't up to scratch on his defensive plans. It's pure stubbornness that he wasn't on the bench to get 15 minutes if we were losing a match rather than bring on Paredes.

I heard that Oulare and Berghuis sought loan moves in January but Quique thought they'd learn more around he squad.

Bearing in mind a) they were his tactics and b) he didn't want Berghuis to leave in January, yes, you can entirely blame QSF for that.

Didn't he cost us 4 or 5 million? Pozzo's aren't going to sell at a loss so if he wants to go, someone is going to have to cough up

His assist took a massive deflection and then he was hauled off on the hour.

    Get rid.

Me too. After the few games he played at the end of of last season and the few games he's just played for the Netherlands, it'd be a travesty if we sold him this summer.

3-5-2 maybe an issue though as he is definitely not a wing back. I hope we find a system that he can play in as he has shown how much talent he has

Mazzarri used Hamsik as the attacking midfielder in his 3-5-2 but then he joined the front two to make 3-4-3 at times, Berghuis would be perfect for this. Not suited to wing back at all but so clever with the ball and has a good shot on him, play him in the middle but let him drift wherever he likes.

Mazzarri actually plays a 3 4 2 1 which would suit him nicely

A Dutch international with winger should be attracting 40m interest from around Europe. Instead he's wasted a year under Quique in the under 21s

He's probably ahead of Memphis in the picking order now, who was signed for 30 million.

It's funny how many people are jumping on the Berghuis bandwagon and criticising QSF for not playing him.

I seem to remember the majority of the forum negativatrons were writing him off as a waste of money after his 2 substitute appearances at the start of the season.

Yeah good point, seem to remember the palace game at home which we lost 1-0 he played but he had a bit of a stinker. Still Flores should of gave him more of a chance

Must admit, people were saying he was flaky at the start of the season, but maybe a bit of time has helped. His assistee (made up word!) or rather the guy who scored from Berghuis' assists for The Netherlands is from AZ Alkmaar isn't he, so maybe he and Berghuis played a style for the national team that they both recognised from there. I am actually confusing myself, but I know what I am trying to say!

I do find it's good to start with a consistently low , initial base level . And then work upwards from there if and when necessary, on a performance by performance basis.

Berghuis seems to be really tricky, but very one footed and always cutting in off the right. Good cross on him though.

Yeah, I remember a really good article WDSports wrote on this where they criticised him for wearing gloves with short sleeves. It just showed he wasn't ready to contribute much to the first team. This is why they are streets ahead of the Observer - WDSports will look at something that seems irrelevant to most people and be able to draw a really insightful conclusion from it.

Hazard can quite obviously use both feet very well, think Hornpete is questioning Berghuis's ability to use both rather than his decisions to cut in.
