I can't really see where we can use Berghuis in either a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3. He's only really going to fit a 4-4-2 formation.

If we do sign Djedfdsf at right back and Lombaerts comes in at centre half, we still need a playmaker to replace Jurado. So my list of leavers would be Arlauskis, Belkalem, Guedioura, Pudil, Paredes, Nyom, Amrabat and either Vydra or Berghuis would take the final place for players not making the cut.

Don't forget we can go right up until 31st August with an inflated squad before we have to trim down the foreign places to 17, so there is time for a couple of fringe players to change the manager's mind and stake a place.

I don't see why he can't at least make a claim for the CAM role behind the strikers; reasonable eye for a pass and he scored a decent variety of goals the season prior to joining. People seem to have him pinned down as winger but he's not that quick, nor does he seem to take people on.

Unless the club have a quality CAM lined up I don't know why we would let him go. There really isn't anyone else in the team who has stamped any authority on the spot. WD claim Capoue will be playing there, personally I don't see it.

Secretly hoping for a shock move for Zielinski (which wont happen). One decent season with us and he can have his move to Liverpool for twice the price.

Capoue as goal scoring midfielder? God i hope not , he s more in danger of troubling the ball boys than the goalkeeper.

Surely deep lieing playmaker with a bit of box to box thrown in , is his best role .

I think the fact that Holland have played him recently has changed people's opinion of him. For me he's very much hit and miss when he plays for us. I just can't see him being picked ahead for Deeney, Ighalo and Success. In a 4-3-3, these will be the first choice trio I would suspect, with Sinclair, Berghuis and/or Vydra from the bench.

Berghuis has laid down a clear marker to the club. Convince him he's part of their plans or he's off, which is fair enough. I don't think he'll be any more than a bench player, so he'll probably go.

I had a dream... Oh yes!!

    Berghuis Goes to Feyenoord
    Pudil to Leeds.
Amrabat and Belkalem go to Granada on loan
Parades, ABDI and Vydra go to Udinese on the last day of the window !!
Nyom stays and plays centre back all season
We sign 3 more foreigners I ve never heard of that may have played some African or South American football at some point and have had a remote connection to Napoli or Inter approx 5 years ago !!

It was Possibly a nightmare !!

  9. Not sure where that's come from. He got the ball in midfield, bit of a jinky run and played a decent ball to (I think) Sinclair who lost it in a challenge from a defender (IIRC). He wasn't on for any amount of time, but the little he did looked OK to me; it was about as much as most other players did in any five minute period of the game.

Although that is a bit of an improvement on his role for a lot of last season.

Berghuis is talented but young. He needs games. If he's good enough to get significant minutes here, he should stay, if not, load him. I think he can play in any formation with a back 4.

    Relax , don't do it ,
When you wanna come.....off the bench in the 89th minute in a meaningless substitution that is an insult to the years and years of hard work you ve endured to become a professional footballer.

I really hope he stays this season. His form at the end of the last campaign, his appearances for Holland in the summer and now a goal today (plus either a goal or assist at Woking, depending on your viewpoint lol) are all encouraging. I appreciate the argument that it might be difficult starting him in a 3-5-2 but I really think he has something different to offer us this season.

He s got what Michael Vaughan , England cricket captain , calls the X factor .

When games are a stalemate he has the knack of making something happen . Ironically that was what we so sorely missed end of last season .

He is s bit lightweight in defence , and this age where everyone has to pull their weight he might be restricted to super sub role .

I actually thought you meant to offload him, which would be a bit drastic!

Seems Berghuis has signed for Feyenoord on loan till the end of the season, will be made official this week.

Was going to be hard for him to get much game time so I can understand it. A shame we never got to see the best of him.

Shame, that'll be the last time we see him then. Clearly talented and should have played much more last season but I guess he won't fit into our new system and if he wants guaranteed games then it's best for all parties if he moves on.

I've changed my mind. I'm annoyed.
He was good at the end of last season (ie when Flores actually put him on the pitch!) and then he played well for Holland too.
I haven't been to any of the friendlies but it sounds like he played in the number 10 role in the first 2 - which is a position I always thought would suit him, what with his tendency to drift in from the wing anyway, his eye for a pass and a lack of blistering pace. He managed to get himself a goal playing there... what did he do wrong? Only Abdi is left who could play there now and Flores seems to have started a rumour that he's a right back or something because now Mazzarri’s doing it!
Then when Mazzarri changes to 343 and plays Berghuis in his favourite right wing position: he scores again. Next thing you know he's back to the Dutch league?!

We'd better announce somebody exciting coming in on the same day.

It feels like we always recruit too many players each summer, and sell too many. We're busier than we need to be, and don't need to give ourselves a problem in this area of the pitch by letting go a player who shone for us at the end of last season when there was little else to cheer about, who's got a beautiful left peg and who burst onto the international scene with his country.

    Really don't understand this one.

Yeah it's really held us back, that strategy. Damn these Pozzo's and these relentless mid-table Championship seasons we keep experiencing.

When in France for the euros I got speaking to a guy from Holland who claimed to be a friend of SB. He told me that Berghuis asked to leave in January due to not getting on with the coach & also not getting any game time. Feyenoord were very interested but could get nowhere near the wages that he earns at Watford.
I'm guessing that if he does go back to Holland we will still be paying a fair chunk of his income!

  35. Malteser

Out of Berghuis and Amrabat, I know who I'd rather have seen play for us this coming season :(

Let's live in hope, as it's only a loan, he comes back for 2017-18 and still has a big role to play.

Incidentally, it keeps up the 'curse' of first goal scorer under new coaches since the Pozzos came. Both Mingoia and Vydra achieved that accolade too, only to be farmed out not long after. In addition, Connor Smith scored in QSF's first match, although not the first goal.

(before anybody says so, I know Deeney and Ighalo were also first goal-scorers, under Sannino and QSF respectively!)
