I disagree. Very likely to start, especially early on in the campaign.

 

Is this a one-year deal or a two-year deal, because if it's a one-year deal it shouldn't block their path at all since I expect they'll both be loaned out this season

 

I get it's not the 'sexy signing' we all want to see and we'd name quite a few players above this dude, but people need to take the emotion out of it and look at it for what it is. He's an experienced, hardened, combative midfielder with decent technical abilities. We are crying out for this type of midfielder as our midfield is too lightweight currently. Would've been very happy with Thorsby but this guy looks a more short-term solution whilst we are cutting our cloth financially. If it's not the right time to spend £7m on a player then I don't mind this deal.

Will be very interesting to see what happens with the whole Hughes/Chalobah situation over the next week or two. IF/WHEN they both leave then we will need to be adding at least one more midfielder to the ranks.

 

Sounds like we were priced out of Thorsby and so moved to next on the list. If that is the case then he is not a bonus extra back up midfielder (as implied by the hope that he 'doesn't play much') - if he's not playing much it's because Gosling or Cleverly are playing a lot.

 

I’m sure they’ve been furnished handsomely by Villa (given money is burning a hole in their pocket) for a player with a year left on his deal.

I’d be delighted if someone came along and gave us good value for Hughes for instance in the same circumstance.

EDIT: £25m for a player with a year left who let it be known he wouldn’t sign a new deal. Southampton fans should be ecstatic!

 

Some outlets saying we're paying €4m for Kucka, which I'm sure is complete rubbish. Would be amazed if we spent any fee on a 34 year old. We just wouldn't.

 

Oh yeah, the rumoured £30m is a lot, but those goals will be hard to replace...

I heard he was near the bottom of the transfer target list, just above Pavel Nedved, Zippy from Rainbow and Jesus Christ.

 

They'll probably have to spend a similar amount for someone I'm certain isn't as good tbf

Having just watched a 3 minute YT vid on this bloke and so can now speak with complete authority. Some thunks...

1- Looks hard as fxck. Makes Joka look like cuddly QSF
2- Looks a top top proper proper baller
3- Got a decent long shot
4- Looks more of a high energy box to boxer, but at his age he ll prob just be sitting in front of the back 4 or otherwise polishing his zimmer frame on the bench.

 

That's how I view it too. Seems a solid enough signing for our first year back up, fills a role we don't really have, and probably easily affordable while we continue to dig out of the Covid + Relegation financial black hole.

 

Is Kucka more like Yokuslu or Thorsby? If this deal is the Thorsby alternative rather than the Yokuslu one, I wouldn't be too disappointed as I think Yokuslu is better than Thorsby tbf. A big if us getting Yokuslu in fairness!

 

Im not just on about 1 window - they have made a model of it and done it for years.

I am sure they have promising young players and I am sure they will continue to play them. We may well have some on our books, but their pathways are blocked by Deeney, Gosling, Cathcart et al until they are loaned/sold. They would not having given game time to cathcart at the end of last season and flogged Wilmot.

Id be surprised if Baah and Pollock feature regularly for us really.

£2m for a 34 year old and a 2 year deal? Just false economics. Go the extra yard and get a younger player. No wonder we have such financial problems.

 

If we were in for him a couple of years ago I would be buzzing about the signing. In terms of quality I would say that Kucka is or (was) better than Thorsby and Yokuslu.
He is a physical and agressive player who is good at winning the ball back and he reads the game relatively well. If Kucka is not passed it and we can get a season out of him then it's a good signing.

 

I am hoping that it is the alternative to Thorsby as I think Kucka and Yokuslu would probably work quite nicely.

 

Sorry I thought you were referencing our dealings this summer. Seems like a change in strategy for us this year

 

Well seeing as Quina hardly shone for us in the Championship, and seeing that TDB has played about 10 games in his entire senior career, I wouldn't have wanted to rely on them in the Prem, whether we signed Kucka or not, a loan to the Championship is the best thing for both players

 

Well I thought it'd be a near-free transfer. £2m for that age (12 months remaining) is just dumb.

 

Id imagine the player pushed for a move once a club with the stature of Watford FC was rumoured to be interested.

 

I'd like to think we'll try to move Gosling on now he's done the job he was brought in to do, depending on what happens with Chalobah/Hughes

 

I can't pretend to know much about Kucka, but hopefully him and Yokuslu would work!
