Agree with the above, so how can anybody justify any critisium of deeney since he has returned to the playing squad

Because he’s been angling for a move, talking like he’s better than us, admitted he shouldn’t have played at the back end of last season and has been unfit for the start of every one of the last 4 campaigns. That article in The S*n was an ill-advised disgrace and I think fans are naive to welcome him back so quickly with such willing arms.

A 5 minute cameo doesn’t quite wash the bad taste of that away for me yet.

If he gets fitter and puts the hard yards in with us, then more and more will be willing to forgive and forget I’d bet.

Troy Deeney has done great things for Watford. But never forget that Watford has done great things for Troy Deeney too.

I’d personally say that every word of that is ‘justified criticism’.

At the money he is on, he is not going to be anyones first choice - but after mondays international deadline and with PL clubs unable to trade with each other - our "problem" high earners will start to become more attractive
An example is Capoue where the club is right to stay firm with Valencia - I can see half a dozen PL clubs wanting him but maybe they will not be focussed until their options reduce - worst case we get to use him until Jan and that is certainly not bad news

I don't want him to leave. He's an asset at this level - if he realises it and applies himself fully.

Oh I can. He looks like he's eaten Capoue and Deulofeu on top of using the eat out to help out scheme every day it was on.

Deeney has always been at his best when he has a point to prove.

Hopefully Vlad not auto-picking him and no one in the Prem wanting to buy him will put his neck out a bit.

This is 100% true. Troy is one of a small minority of footballers who have the ability to dramatically raise their game, change the course of a match and bring the whole team with them even against superior opposition. The problem is he can only do it 2 or 3 times a season and for large swathes of the rest of the season he's just an out of shape pub footballer who rarely scores from open play and demands neanderthal pub football style lumping it up to the big man as it's all he knows. Most of the time he struts around the club like he owns the place even though he's doing F all on the pitch. He's a terrible example to the other players and it's no surprise the dressing room was such a disaster last season.

Exactly. If he plays in a few weeks time, and gets a goal, or scores a penalty, his supporters will be straight on here justifying their dogmatic support for him and criticising the likes of me for having a go. But recent history shows that he justifies being in the line-up very rarely so rarely that it is often like playing with 10 men.

I presume you are just talking about the last season or so when like most of the team he hasn't been at his best although with one dodgy knee and at his age or level of alleged fitness it's hardly a surprise.

A striker who has scored 120 goals in 10 seasons normally wouldn't be the worse example to follow generally - even if doesn't always come across as being in the best physical shape.

I think Andre Gray was the one striker who set a terrible example last tbh - whole country on lockdown, 2 days before a game.

And then he goes and has a party with his mates!

    Making excuses afterwards too.

People wonder why we still have restrictions and cannot go to games etc.

Partly because of idiots like him not respecting some fairly simply rules.

Made the club look like right old mugs too...

I know who'd we missed more if fully fit were both left.

Deeney is decent at this level, even if a little unfit. He's been putting strength work into his knee outside the normal training programmes, which would have seen him doing reduced CV training and general fitness work. Also not been involved in a normal pre season where he would expect to burn off some excess. Therefore I think its a touch unfair to say he's not bothered or is unreasonably out of shape.

He'll be trying to proove his fitness either to get in the starting 11 or for a move to the premier league. I reckon in the stupid extra 2 weeks* the premier league can only sign players from the EFL, someone will have an injury or panic buy cover from the championship.

    * (theres a rule made to help the bigs clubs piss on the smaller clubs if ever I saw).

Due to the salary and possibly lost small sale fee, failing to move TD on will stop us bringing in 2-3 new signings/loans or put more pressure on us to sell Sarr. I don't believe he will earn a starting place this season ahead of Gray, Sarr, Pedro, GD if he stays, even Perica so it's money down the drain and lost chance to strengthen the squad.

And Murray who I think has come in as the Deeney replacement?

Big, strong, experienced and knows how to score goals in the Championship.

Seems as slow and unable to move freely though ATM!

Maybe the bigger issue is we haven't replaced Deeney well with the same sort of striker.

Okaka came and went mainly down to his own lack of fitness.

Success is well Success - another who'd rather party than get fit and play some football.

Deeney is worth a place in our squad this season as an impact sub and a stand in for injured players, as his experience could be invaluable to help us bounce back to the PL, but he should not be a regular first eleven starter or team captain. Furthermore if we gain promotion this season, he should not be in our plans back in the PL as his days as a PL standard player are probably behind him.

Therefore to sum up I think TD9 could be very useful for us this season and I would be happy for him to stay, though not as team captain. However, once we gain promotion back to the PL, it should be thanks for the memories TD9 you will always be a WFC legend, but now is the time for you to go.

Whether he can do a job or not is sort of irrelevant - 100k a week for an impact sub is a lot in the PL, never mind the championship.

From memory, parachute payments are about £48m - that would mean that 10% of our budget is going just on Deeney's wages.

Also a lot of criticism of Pereyra, Suarez and Estupinan for wanting to move, but Deeney as our captain, used the post match interview aftrer our relegation to advertise himself to other PL clubs and has spent the entire off-season begging for a move elsewhere.

People who think Deeney is great at this level need to watch the highlights from 6 years ago and see how much slimmer and faster he was.

The club will be in a far healthier position if we get his wages off the books.

I understand that people have different body shapes, you will have some naturally athletic\slim or
some more burly with a tendency to gain weight easily.
But in this day of sports nutrition etc how does an elite sportsman become overweight/unfit ?

You really need to get over the lockdown party thing - you reference it a lot but the club have clearly moved on. It was idiotic - but involved 3 players who weren’t getting many minutes anyway. And all 3 have knuckled down this season and aren’t ruffling feathers unlike others.

And there 3 players involved, not just Gray. I don’t see Quina and Chalobah having it used against them time and time again?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no huge Deeney fan whatsoever - just look at my posts from yesterday. But the bits I’ve put in bold are not ‘facts’ and I’m sure there are those within the club who would say they aren’t entirely true.

It is certainly arguable whether Deeney is an "asset" at this level, Burnsy, especially if he is still on £70k + a week. More a matter of opinion I would think, but that's what a forum is for, and Moosegram is just expressing his opinion like you.

120 goals in 10 seasons is not really a lot to write home about for a main striker tbh. Plenty of pens in there, too. He’s not a natural finisher. For all the up-and-atem stuff that occasionally turns a game single-handed, I’d say that on balance he’s a negative influence around the club.

That’s fair. But I think some of it is a little ‘bombastic’ in its nature personally.

When I claim he ‘is’ an asset, I should have said he ‘could’ be an asset, I agree. The skills he has as a player could be really beneficial - but sadly it’s all the external stuff that keeps re-appearing that overrides that. Weight, media appearances, self-proclaimed ego...and he can’t let those things go.

It was beyond obvious that he needed a summer of keeping his weight in check, getting his knee sorted and keeping his mouth shut. Sadly, that was beyond him.

Whether he stays or not the one thing I'm confident of is that we now have a head coach who will only pick him if he feels he warrants a place on the pitch and will also only be talking about Troy being the 'main man' on or off the pitch if it's been deserved. If he's not playing, neither Troy nor the club will want him to be here, so if something isn't done now then it will be in January (probably a loan to a team looking for a quick fix).

  30. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Possibly - but he needs to be fit and in shape to get that move. I suspect it’s a large part of why he hasn’t got a move yet this window. If he’s not picked for the next few months, can you see him being motivated to keep his powder dry in the media whilst getting in match-ready shape for a January move?

Just as well - maybe learnt their lesson.

Hopefully all those other people being selfish ignoring the rules whilst others are fearing for their lives ill do the same but that is a debate for another subject.

I wonder if Troy had been at the party if he's be forgiven now ..

No room for sentiment in football.

The harsh reality is he’s old, slow and not very good, whilst picking up £70k per week.

The bang for buck is appalling.

We should be doing everything humanly possible to shift him, we could bring in three or four players who are all better and would contribute more for his salary.

FWIW I don’t think we will shift him and we’ll be stuck with him, but if anyone thinks he’s good value for £70k p/w (in the championship!) they’re living a long way back in the past.
