leave Troy be. given him or Murray, there is no question who I would want on the bench. If he's bought in to Ivic's approach (I see no reason to see that he hasn't) then lets give him a chance.

Think he’s fair game when he’s that size really. Clearly not looked after his physical fitness...again.

Why don't people just let things go.
Ivic has stated that he won't select players who do are not fit or do not want to play, so it seems t that deeney fulfills this criteria.
I expect most on this forum,me included, are in worse shape than deeney .
Stones and glass houses comes to mind .

Difference is no one on this forum is a professional footballer or club captain. Ivic has even said he’s not in proper physical shape and they have to work with him day-by-day at the moment.

Deeney has been pretty widely praised for his attitude in sticking up for a younger teammate on Saturday as well so it’s not a witch hunt. But he’s clearly once again let his weight go, no point in pretending otherwise.

I'm in better shape than he is, and I'm about 30 years older, and I'm not being paid a fortune by my employer to look after myself, I sit working at a desk all day, and I don't get the expert nutritionists, or coaching staff at my beck and call.

I make no apologies. He is the club captain and looks fat and unfit, and he is still probably raking in 3 times the average annual salary, each week. He's been peddling himself in the media and bigging himself up as if he's too good for us. It may be that he turned up for the odd interview with potential suiters, and they gave up on him when they saw the size of him. Now, maybe he is trying to worm his way back in after not get the offer he expects. If he gets flak, then he has effectively asked for it.

Agreed, I'm a fat ******* but I'm not a professional footballer being handsomely paid to motivate me to leave the beer and pies alone for a few years. What was he doing in that gym that was in the photos? Visiting the cafe?

Possibly so in some cases but there is no excuse to have so much fat.
Any half decent S&C coach could have designed a programme to work for Troy given his injury,I could design one come to that.
There is no excuse,it's unprofessional. He's paid a fortune to remain in shape for BMI if not cardio work which would be difficult post operation.

The comparisons to Murray are erroneous because he’s on 7.5k per week, so 10% of Troy’s salary. Is Troy 10 times better? Absolutely not. If we can shift him it still makes absolute sense as we’ll save ourselves £70k per week and not losing a player we will miss in terms of talent and what he can now bring to the team. It’s not really Murray vs Troy because they’re both about as bad as each other, but with one costing us a fraction of the money.

Think this is a little harsh. Troy clearly has one of those bodies that looks like he's overweight when he isn't and is clearly very fit (see Frank Lampard, Rooney etc.). I also have one of those bodies, where even when I was fit enough to run marathons and was given dietary advice by a nutritionist, I still had a pouch - some people aren't blessed with amazing bodies!

He’s been slimmer before though - namely before we went up to the PL. He’s actively stated that he tries to bulk up - maybe trying to pile the muscle on as well is where he’s going wrong. But at some stage, he needs to realise it’s a continuing pattern.

I'm pretty sure Deeney is going to stay and it wouldn't surprise me if he signs a new 3-year deal on a lower salary while we're in the Championship, but heavily loaded with promotion bonuses plus an assurance of his previous wage reinstated if we go up. Something along those lines.

Last year he admitted he'd been overweight and unfit for two years. I'm pretty sure that if you were offered £90k a week to play football and get rid of that paunch, you could do it easily.

Irrespective of his weight/fitness his salary is based on his potential / status at the time of renewal and was probably
inflated by the £18m signing of gray, who wages are similar.

Surely it is up to the fitness advisors/coach to monitor his weight etc and act accordingly

I thought this week we would be celebrating our victory not mocking our club captain who is only one of 5 players to score over 100 goals for us.

You're right, we beat L**** 1-0 so everything is now perfect.
You're right again, it's the fitness advisors fault. If they don't tell Troy, how the hell is he expected to know he's fat and out of condition ?

Make no bones about it, if we somehow manage to unload this, not insignificant dead weight from our club and wage bill, I won't be making any fuss at all.

We need him to stay for a five minute cameo when we play away to Conservatory Warehouse FC. Would have bulked up a bit more by then so the next scummers head will come right off.

That 'pouch' comes from someone's body fat percentage, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, it's as simple as that, and as Burnsy has pointed out, we have literally seen him without the spare tire back during the few times he's bothered to remain in appropriate shape for his job.

Again, to have put that weight on in the small period between resumption and now is the basest unprofessionalism and a great big freshly-cleaned window into his overall attitude; he has to be eating and drinking a pretty insane amount to do that, considering the fact that he would also have been training regularly over the period.

He's spoken before about how it takes him a number of games to get up to fitness, and now he's lumbering about as overweight as he's ever been - no wonder the prem options he was courting have failed to materialise, and even if they did he'd be useless, as he'd spend the majority of his time on the bench and never get enough minutes to reach whatever the level he considers 'fit' is.

    A) Why not both? They are not mutually exclusive, and there has been a great deal of open celebration of our derby victory, as well as praise for Troy himself for some of his actions including from longtime critics of his, such as myself. So you can go on and get the **** out of here with that red herring.

    B) Why does scoring a lot of goals for us remove his professional (not to mention personal, given his role as captain and revelled-in position as figurehead) obligation to remain in appropriate shape to carry out the job he is remunerated extremely handsomely for, beyond the dreams of 99.9 percent of humans, to the level expected now?

size is not always in proportion to fitness , no matter how many red herrings you eat, as i said the club has fitness and diet coaches who should be monitering all players fitness ,the manager has stated that he will only pick players who are fit,so it seems that he has a totally different view on deeneys body shape than you.
Adebayo Akinfenwa was a lot heavier than deeney, not a prolific goal scorer ,but was hero worshiped by all of the clubs he played for.

  32. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

Again, just more red herrings and misdirection. Do you think Akinfenwa, who has essentially never played above League One, would be an appropriate striker for us to bring in and play?

If you are arguing that Troy hasn't been out of shape/fitness and played during his time here, then you are arguing with the words of Troy himself as published more than once in the national press, and we can probably leave it at that. I would also suggest that this:

    > he manager has stated that he will only pick players who are fit,so it seems that he has a totally different view on deeneys body shape than you

    Is wilfully naive, at best.

  33. Rambo

If you read my reply ,i never said that Akinfenwa was appropriate for watford , i just used him as a example that all footballers don't have to have fat free bodies to be sucessfull.
And before you say differant , any one who has played professional sport for 20 years has been sucessfull .
And yes i might be naive but i would rather be that way than be as negative as many on this forum.

  34. Burnsy

Akinfenwa isn’t fat. Deeney is. Both are big but only one shows himself to be repeatedly overweight for his profession. He admits it again and again himself!

Plus Ivic’s strength and conditioning coach started far later than Ivic himself and Deeney was away from the training ground whilst recuperating supposedly. We have seen him slimmer than he is now so this current size/shape isn’t in keeping with his best shape however much you spin it.

What I will say is he is naturally big. You only have to look at some boxers who are naturally big but lose weight whilst active and balloon after retirement. Deeney clearly quickly puts weight on when not active. I don’t think it’s through eating junk or alcohol or anything like that. I think he just needs to be constantly active to keep the weight off - and he doesn’t do that clearly.
