He doesn't. This getting at Frank Smith is absolutely ridiculous. He reports the stories he hears and they have ALL been correct.

 

I agree. I think he's doing a good job, he's well connected to the goings on within the club as he should be, he's careful to not jump the gun and be sensationalist, but at the same time he's informative and has proven his credibility.

For someone like myself not in the local area any more, who only manages to get to 10 or so games a year, I'm appreciating getting something alternative to the 'official line' that comes out of the club itself.

There's nothing wrong with Frank's reporting though personally I might have tried to clarify the situation before publishing, I find little fun in making respectable people look foolish.

I think the whole Frank Smith thing is ridiculous. Things are going pretty well on the pitch with an 80% league win ratio so we'll look elsewhere for issues. A lot of people wanted Beppe out so when the news broke through the Wobby, Frank was accused of **** stirring, turns out he was true. Beppe told the players he was going after the Rotherham game, there may have been a crossover of talking to Garcia whilst he was still in Israel but with the situation as it is there I'm sure OG was already considering his position for the safety of his family.

We live in a day and age where news, rumours and speculation are rife. Anyone can edit anything these days. The thing is as soon as there is any of that out there in the public domain fans want more. Fans want the truth. Fans want blood. When Frank finally delivers a piece which has all that you want, he's then put down and told he is at fault. If he is getting the answers then he is a bloody good reporter. A lot of Watford news is broken by the local paper and if i'm totally honest I'd rather that than any other outlet.

 

Everything he said surrounding the Beppe saga has turned out to be wrong, the only articles suggesting other reasons aside from training are his own : :

He's journalisms equivalent to McGugan; he tries hundreds of long shots and because a couple go in people think he is good and ignore the lack of quality in every other department. :dismay:

 

Erm everything except his job was under threat....we get it Carlos you pray to your Sannino poster everynight...however he's gone...get over it...we've played no one significant yet youre creaming yourself as if we've just got rid of Mourinho.

Beppe was a no mark brought in to do a job...and he did it...but long term he wasnt the answer.Horrible away record last season tells it all...

 

We've just replaced Mourinho with Moyes.

 

Well, technically he was right that Sannino's job was in doubt but for the wrong reasons he reported.

I agree with this totally.

People are saying he called it right when his own articles admit he was wrong about player influence. Ridiculous.

There is also the question of the quality of his writing and the construction of his articles, which is often of a quality that does not reflect his position of group deputy sports editor, though perhaps that is a grander title that it suggests.

I actually have very little problem with the news he is reporting, for me it is the way he writes that can and has lead to poor communication of the content, inflaming supporters when he should have been informing them. There is also the issue of recycled information with little or no improved content being rehashed as new articles; the Toszer saga being a case in point, where the same information was just represented over and over again, gaining hits for the Obo's (the Wobby to you kids) site, but providing little extra understanding to the reader. There is also the "He's Back" syndrome (published when many were hoping for the imminent return of Vydra, but the article was about Chovanec, who had never been at the club in the first place), where headlines are used to generate hits with no regard for the reader's wasted time. Some of this is undoubtedly forced upon him, and timescales too may be an issue, but I'd wager that a good number of posters on here could write better quality articles than Frank does.

That is no reflection on the information he is reporting, just the way it is written.

 

Always thought Viva Espana has a lot of potential for a football song.

Personally, I'm not that bothered about how things are written. I don't think that updating, what has become, a 24/7 online newspaper can be compared with writing a weekly column in the OB, as in OP's day.

You may not. But a deputy group sports editor most certainly should; and so should his employer. I find poorly written articles difficult to read; I consider articles that are misleading or inflammatory because of the quality of writing to be dangerous and counter productive; and I am offended by the use of deliberately misleading articles to promote a website under false pretences.

I think you do yourself a disservice here ZZ, because you clearly set standards for yourself on a fans forum, so I find it difficult to conceive that you wouldn't expect similar courtesy from a professional news channel.
