Confidence player, head goes down far to easily.

Once he goes on a barren run he looks lost. Once he scores he is awesome for a few games (till the next barren run)

I think he does still make the same little darting runs but the ball is not pushed through on the floor, arriving head or chest high from 30yards giving him too much to do. The little flicks must be a management training idea as Deeney backheels it without looking. A better question would be why rely on hitting the front two with long aerial through balls when we haven't out jumped a centre half yet this season.

Barren run or not a little effort goes a long way. Rarely see him chase back and his body language is atrocious. If he showed some enthusiasm he may get encouragement from the crowd, giving him that little bit of confidence he needs to get scoring. Instead he loses the ball, doesn't chase back and gets slated.

Yes he needs better service, so does Deeney and Ighalo, but they both work their socks off and sometimes make their own luck, e.g. on Saturday for Ighalo's goal.

Have Ighalo and Vydra played up front together yet? In a 3-5-2?

I just dont agree, based on Saturdays game. I think the stick he gets on here is unwarranted. In my view he was the only one getting in the faces of their defence in the first half. Yes, his head goes down easily, but then he doesn't benefit from the adulation Deeney gets, even when he is playing like s***.

He was electric for two months or so in his first season, and scored a great goal against Leicester in the playoffs. Apart from that he's not really shown a great deal else to be fair! This is my assessment.

Effort is fair enough, but if I played up front for Watford I'd give 100%, but would you want me in the team every week just for trying hard?

I feel bad for him, he is obviously told to run on the last man but is never provided the right service. Sadly, his job pretty much every match is to close down the keeper and put pressure on the defenders - and we all know that his ability doesn't deserve to be wasted in that role.

I'd like to see him doing something other than hanging on the shoulder of the last man. I think if he got into the sort of positions Charlie Austin or even David Nugent get into he would be scoring regularly with even a modicum of service. So far this season I've rarely seen him in the box, he's trying flick ons 30 yards out, picking up the ball from short corners, and has even been taking them. Despite all the other manifest failings at the moment, the use of Vydra is my biggest gripe about the coaching that's happening. Vydra must be doing amazing things in training 30 yards away from the goal.

No, but he is the one that gets dropped and/or substituted, instead of Deeney who just carries on playing like s***.

He's had f**k all service this season and yet has still produced some great moments, not least a wonder strike against Brentford.

I think he's actually come back from WBA a better player and with a little bit of luck and some half decent service, I reckon he'll still hit 20 goals this season.

I'm not sure where this notion that he doesn't work hard has come from. I've regularly seen him chase back and tackle, while also pressing defenders. I'm guessing people are just remembering him from his first spell, when no doubt he was lazy.

For what it's worth, I find it utterly frustrating when he gets subbed off regardless of how well he's playing, while Deeney always plays the 90mins even when bang out of form. If it annoys me, I can only imagine how he feels!

I see it very differently. I think he chases down the oppo a fair bit. He certainly did against Reading and when he came on against Chelsea.

The problem is in the midfield.

Tozser in particular has been in absolutely shocking form for a while now. I've lost count of the amount of times I've spotted Vydra make a good run off the ball only to be given a poor pass or in most cases totally ignored.

You can see by his reaction every time it happens how pissed off he is and it's difficult to blame him.

    I feel for Vydra.

He had the player of the year a few years back so expectations on him are very high.

The problem for a striker, over a left back for example, is you can much more easily just a strikers performance by his goals.

Pudil, for example, may have consistently completed 75% of his tackles last year, but this year its only 50%. He will not be scrutinised half as bad as Vydra if he had got 15 goals by this time last year, and this seasons he's only had 4.

  22. Harrow Orn

Countless times this season he has lost the ball and then just stood there and moaned rather than chase back which has probably overshadowed the good bits of chasing down he has done on some occasions. I think he could show a little bit more in terms of body language too, his head drops too easily.

I have seen him chase back a few times, and he's gotten a good round of applause when he has. It just makes me wonder why he doesn't do it all the time. I actually don't think he wants to be here.

Our problem right now is the midfield are all out of form.

Tozser is inexplicably unable to do anything, we don't have a proper anchorman, Abdi is still not over his long term injury and only showing flashes of his former self, and Munari blows hot and cold. Anya has been off form for months outside of the occasional assist; I re-watched the play off semi the other day and the difference in Anya's play, now versus then, is jaw-dropping and depressing. Paredes has not yet stepped up to the standard of play he showed in his debut.

The only player who has been anywhere near his normal standard of play is Pudil, and he's one of the few solid-but-unspectacular grafter types in the team so he's not going to carry us on his own. An in-form Abdi could certainly carry this team, but we don't have one of those.

Until the midfield start playing well again and actually trying to find Vydra's runs, none of the strikers are going to look up to much. We've got a lethal finisher who moves well and can outrun virtually anyone in the division, yet we insist on playing innocuous sideways passes before hitting a wayward high ball over the top which is cleared by the defense every time. Right now we're playing in a fashion which would be more appropriate for Ranegie than Vydra.

I agree with the earlier comments that Vydra looks a better, more rounded player after his time with West Brom. I don't blame him for being frustrated because he's getting naff all from the rest of the team right now. The only player who seems to try and slide him through is Nando, and he's not getting much game time.

When you think of Vydra's strengths, it's his pace and finishing ability. That's quite clearly not being utilized right now, he's not making runs in behind and looks to be playing more 'in the hole' but you'd have to think FF is better suited to that position. If we're going to play him we should play to his strengths and accept he might have games where he barely does anything - that's the reality of a striker like him.

I agree with almost all that. But I would add that I still don't that there is enough movement in front of the defence and up front. On Saturday, Angella and Toszer pumped up high towards the D probably 6 times, but in all honesty there was little movement and therefore little option. When we were behind the second time both Deeney and Ighalo were just standing near the D and that is where it came to be gobbled up by their players. Where is the run out wide, stretching the defence, pulling the defenders apart creating gaps for the likes of Abdi to exploit?

From memory, I think that happened twice. Once when the defenders were pulled out to their left, allowing Abdi to come through the gap into space, and a one on one chance (which he skied about 10 foot over). And once when all the movement and play had been on the left, leaving Layun a chance from the right.

For throw-ins and corners the movement is just pathetic, it is embarrassing. Apart from the fact that corners never seem to clear the first defender, it is just obvious that nothing else will be tried. Never to the far post, never laid back to the D for someone running in. No one ever darts out to the flag for a short one, etc. So ******* predictable and therefore so easily dealt with!

The annoying thing for me, is that the sort of things I am talking about can be coached in to the players. Natural skill is inherent, but looking for space and movement and trying something different (off the ball) to keep the opposition guessing where it is going, can be taught. It seems our players have forgotten who to do it, and the coaching staff don't seem that bothered.

Why do us in the crowd get more animated when we see these things (not happening) than the coaches on the touchline who actually have the opportunity to do something about it?

    Rant over, sorry.

Agree with this, and the frustrating part for me is that the players are all capable of it. For example, for a short period before Udders second goal we has a spell of looking quite dangerous going forward as players started to move and find space. Abdi's missed chance was a great example of this.

Why aren't we doing that for 90 minutes? Every time the movement clicks into place we cut teams apart.

He is operating 30 yards from goal becasue that makes him only 20 yards from the rest of the team, if he was in the area he would be very lonely as we do not get numbers forward to support the front 2. On saturday Vydra chased and retrieved a ball on thier goal line just outside the area, when he turned with the ball there was no one in or near the box so he had to play it all the way back, support the strikers and they may deliver more.

Look, let's just send him back to Udinese and be done with it.

We can then spend the next 14 months talking about his possible return.

I wouldn't criticize Vydra too much. He relies on service. Under Zola when he was banging them in Deeney Abdi Anya (who by the way has always been most effective down the right by the way so wasted on the left) were in the form of their lives and were able to spot his intelligent runs. Chalobah did at times too.
We don't currently have players playing well enough to consistently pick that killer pass in to him. I've seen him make them runs this season. Thats why he gets frustrated. He also gets frustrated when he tries things that don't come off. But so does Deeney.
I would give Iglaho a run of games as he seems to be finding the net lately but only for that reason. Vydra isn't crap for us he just going through a lean spell at the moment.

probably been said before, but an effective MV relies upon quick passing and movement in midfield to create opportunities for a pass into him on a run from close up to opposition back line. Our midfield is more laboured this season in respect of the passing game giving the opposition the opportunity to reset and often resulting in a sideways or back pass and then resulting in a longer ball over which is meat and drink to most championship defenders. Whilst I admire toszer the fleet footed chalobah with Abdi could play the way that brought the best out of Vydra, who is frustrated but in my view a better all round player now than he was first time around.
At the mo, given the choice I would be playing Ighalo and Vydra as Iggy adds unpredictability as has been mentioned by others. After a few seasons most defenders know what to expect with TD, strength and good finishing but perhaps not as much craft as the other two plus FF. the leading point though is the current inability of the midfield to create chances in the required fashion to place MV one on one. No better finisher in that situation IMHO

Every game i've watched the midfield gets bored of and then lumps it over the top anyway, it's awful to watch, especially when half the times they lump it there's a decent option on.
