Least Favourite Xmas Song

I was talking to my 10-year-old son about Xmas songs the other day, when Shakin' Stevens' "Merry Christmas Everyone" hit came on the radio. I admitted to him I couldn't name another Shakin' Stevens track, I was his age in the 1980s, but the song itself s Xmas hits go is a little underrated, it's simple, catchy and upbeat. So what more do you want from a Christmas song? I get that Band Aid was about raising money so that was a serious song, other Christmas songs are just catchy, i.e. the aforementioned Shakin' Stevens song but so is Slade, and love it or hate it the Wizzard song; others are more melancholy but still rememberable. That leaves the plain old ***** which no-one likes, @Clive_ofthe_Kremlin made a good point about "Driving Home For Christmas", I'd also add "2000 miles", and although I'm a fan of Bruce Springsteen his track "Merry Christmas Baby" was a forced attempt.

There are a lot of xmas songs that never made their way into the mainstream lists. Most artists have had a (usually dire) attempt at hitting the annual retirement residuals pension pot goldmine. Eg.

Yayyyyy it’s Last Christmas. A wonderful song written by a hugely talented songwriter and full of hope that however bad things feel for people now, they can always improve in the future. Well done George and Andrew. Deservedly finally the Christmas chart-topper 39 years on!

Well as my username appeared by my post, clearly I was speaking from my viewpoint. I appreciate it’s not everybody’s favourite but it’s mine. I love it. I wouldn’t expect to be derided simply for saying I like a certain song. Clearly I’m not alone as it had 13 million downloads this week alone and is now the UK’s third biggest selling/downloaded song ever (behind The Shape Of You and Band Aid)
