Least Favourite Xmas Song

There are a lot of grating, ching, ching-a-ling, ding dong, ding dong, woooo-woooo-woooo, Santa, sleigh musical bawlocks at this time of year. I feel very sorry for those who have to work in places where they've got those songs on a constant loop.

But which is the worst of all?

I'd like to nominate 'drivin' home for Christmas'. The archetypal stockbroker Virginia Water SUV Xmas tune.

You just KNOW the car he's driving home for Xmas is a 11 miles to the gallon Range Rover Evoque with 4 empty seats pumping out Christmas carcinogens and rattling the fairy lights.

Utter garbage. Supposedly sad and moving but words are so corny and sung along at a boring bouncy little pop song tempo....

I love Fairy tale of New York more each year. Still feels like an antidote when sandwiched between Shakin Stevens and Chris Rea, or Wham, or Cliff Richard…or Elton

 

Elvis Presley’s Blue Christmas is as mournful and depressing as any song can be. I genuinely worry that it will hit my ears one year and drive me to a place so dark that I won’t ever return

 

The song was inspired by a Middlesbrough to London journey by Mini but, as @Clive_ofthe_Kremlin points, out it reeks of stockbroker belt SUV (selfish unnecessary vehicle). And I say this as a fully paid up member of the middle class. I'm with Clive on this one.

 

Not sure how you can totally dissociate a song (or any art form, for that matter) from its genuine origins just because you dislike it. Still, each to their own.

 

No, I bought it at the time and also have an extended version. Sadly the lead singer died about 2-3 years after it came out…

I think they got to No 1 without actually being played anywhere, because they were for charridee. You’d turn off immediately if one was played.

 

Yes totally out of touch, but through choice. Couldn't name a song that made the top 30 in 2023 and the twitter/instagram that I follow wouldn't be remotely interested in this guy/group. Surprised I've not seen him/them on the BBC but then I never watch the one show or whatever it's called these days. I knew he's had a few Xmas number ones from reading this forum but didn't realise it was 5 in a row. Presume he/they have another song out this Xmas ?

Agree, but it is hard to avoid the media interest. It was all over the BBC website last year, for example.
