That is no surprise - but cue first weekend of the season some manager coming out and saying "if only we had VAR"

Well, it seemed like you were blaming the organisation when in fact the clubs made the decision. I tend to see the Premier League as quite innovative in general.

As I say the same clubs whose managers will no doubt complain about lack of technology when a big decision goes against them..

I'd put a bet on if it was possible - Wenger/Jose.

I don’t like VAR but when you see the standard of refereeing it is hard to argue against it. Alonso just stamped on the back of Long’s leg. No attempt to play the ball and could have snapped it. Right in front of the woeful Mike Dean and he gives nothing.

Oh look and Chelsea equalise and if Southampton don't go on and win, could mean the difference between staying up and going down.

Hope Sparky doesn't moan about the ref and all that. He'll be the first in a long line of manager's who look like complete ******* idiots for doing so.

Quite rightly Hughes will complain about the lack of card for Alonso but my point was they cannot grumble about the lack of assisted technical help for the officials.

VAR would have spotted something Mike Dean clearly missed ...

If anyone wants to finally realise why VAR is farcical and will ruin the WC and most football for a good few years, take a look at what happened between Mainz and Freiburg tonight....

Surely the referee being in control of the match is paramount? I’m sure this is always FIFA’s line, in keeping with the laws of the game. So once he has blown for half-time it should be impossible to restart until the second half, otherwise the VAR is refereeing the game.

Also....can you imagine the repercussions if this type of thing was done at full-time as opposed to half-time? Madness. But seemingly legitimate.

Poorly managed for sure but this is the point of trying something out. There's no way the authorities can predict every possible scenario through a desk-based exercise so the real world was always going to throw out oddities like this. The key for me isn't that it happened, it's how it's dealt with going forward or whenever VAR becomes a permanent fixture.

VAR has (by necessity) watered this down a tad. But the referee from that game still made the decision -he went and watched the footage and made the decision himself.

If it needs "ironing out" then it's flawed, simple as that.

The game has always experimented with new rules and ways of doing things. Sometimes they get exploited or sometimes it's clear just plain won't suit the game in the long run and get binned. These things only get found out by trying it.

Do you see VAR being a fixture in top leagues in 5 years time? I don't think it will in this format, but I can see a more refined version appearing. At the moment the process and the equipment looks like something designed by a committee of bureaucrats, attempting to deal with every doubt and actually exposing all of them (sometimes at once).

I don't. I think it'll come in for 2019/2020 and be binned the season after. If, and it's a giant "if", they show the contentious moments on the big screens then it might work, only because the fans have something to look at and discuss while they wait for the decision.

They don't trust us to bring beer to our seats so the above will never happen.

With the advancement of AI we would one day get robo-refs. I can't imagine that the players would argue with one.

    "That wasn't a foul, you're a f*****g b******d ref."
    "Does not compute."

Some Palace fans are calling for VAR after the Zaha stuff - well their chairmen was one of those dead against it so tough on them.

They should be careful what they wish for. With VAR, Zaha would have been sent off after his multiple offences today.

So would ward for a 2nd VERY bookable offence. How did he get away with that o_O

Ref seemed to be suggesting it was more of a coming together. Replay showed Ward clearly wafted a lazy leg at Holebas, who'd already beaten him. Should have been a second yellow.

But then it's more disappointing we didn't really ask many questions of Ward after half time with him already on a yellow. The ref should have been forced into that decision much earlier than the 91st minute .

I had a quick look at the match thread from the Palace fans point-of-view.

Virtually every post was complaining about how bad Ward was. They really can’t stand this guy and want him out of the club ASAP.

They would actually have cheered had Ward been sent off.

They seem really annoyed Doucouré wasn't sent off for confronting Zaha - he didn't fall over that time!

Must admit I wasn't sure it wasn't the wisest thing to do but guess it was in the heat of the moment.

The ref did speak to him afterwards as well and a few players pointed it out included Capoue - probably the most energy he put in all game!

UEA is right - typically we didn't test somebody who had been booked early on - and not for the first time this season.

Picture on the Watford Observer of Zaha's late challenge on Karnezis. Looks to be at least a yellow:

It was reckless and a straight red card. Deeney got sent off for far less against Huddersfield earlier this season.

It all depends on who's officiating. Yesterday, Cavanaugh let a lot go. Many referee's would have sent him off. It's a good job we had Cavanaugh though, as Taylor or Oliver would have certainly given a penalty for the yellow card dive and we would have lost 1-0. Those are the breaks in football.

This is why I'd much rather have one of the lesser referees in charge of our games, as they tend to be a lot less controversial than the so called "big names".

Still photos don’t always tell the full story with challenges like this but, on seeing the video replays, Zaha’s was actually worse than I thought seeing it live. You would always want your forward going for the ball in that situation but his foot was far too high. Certainly a yellow and possibly a red.

It's bizarre why so many fans on here are defending Zaha's challenge and blaming Karnezis for play acting. This place is just so weird at times.

  33. UEA_Hornet

I'm not 'blaming' him for play acting. I'd expect nothing less in the current PL. But he was. I thought at the time it should have been a yellow card for Zaha and nothing I've seen since has changed that view. Even you used the term 'reckless' earlier and that, in the laws of the game, is a yellow card level offence.

They did say on MOTD it was dangerous - you see it quite a bit though and not much is done .

Anyway which player doesn't make the most of that sort of situation..

Palace goalie would have reacted the same up the other end so they cannot really complain about his reaction.

There was excessive force going into the keeper, studs high. It's a straight red. Deeney was sent off for the same reason against Huddersfield, which to me looked a far more innocuous tackle. You agreed with Michael Oliver sending off Deeney at the time, but now you're in agreement with no red card for this one, which if you compare like-for-like, you must think Deeney's tackle was far worse?
