If VAR was in use this season.....

Well the complaints seemed to be mainly from Spurs and Chelsea fans but over decisions that weren't exactly clear cut either way but there has been no glaring error made by VAR - not like those made by officials in real time which as you say we all soon bemoan.

Didn't help in terms of waiting around that for some games it was freezing cold and the lack of communication is mainly down to the negative reputation football fans have "gained" over the decades from police and authorities.

Weren’t Man Utd given a goal by VAR against Huddersfield where the line literally bent around the striker to make it look as if he was inline when he was about a yard offside?

VAR is only meant to be used to change ‘clear and obvious’ errors, so borderline offside decisions should not be changed. However one of the instances when they can use VAR is when a goal is scored. In the trials so far it seems the tendency is to check the build up to every goal, just to see if there is a problem and so borderline decisions are being changed.

It’s the same with penalty incidents: most are debatable or open to interpretation, i.e. they come down to the ref’s opinion, so they shouldn’t be changed by VAR. It’s very unusual that a clear and obvious error is made.

How well do we think FIFA will run this system? I fully expect the World Cup to be ruined by it.

No offence Burnsy, but this post sums up the sort of chinese whispers they take hold against something. Mata had a goal chalked off for offside, not given incorrectly. Hawkeye sent an image to the broadcasters with wonky lines. But the VAR saw the right image and the decision was correct (although tight).

So not a clear and obvious error then...

If I can be honest, I was quite drunk and in a pub at the time paying little attention haha. But upon reading what you have said, I have googled the image and some stories around it and it still seems contentious to me. Certainly not clear enough to reverse the decision.

But I could be sub-conciously biased because I despise VAR and the very idea of it.

Any inaccurate decision that leads to a game changing event is a 'clear and obvious error' .

    Yes https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...onfederations-cup-chile-germany-a7820956.html

And I'd still like someone to explain to me why it's so crucial that all of these marginal decisions in a game are correct. Until then, I'll go on assuming that they just have a very great hole in their lives, where their sense of proportion should be.

Hm..there was contact but slight and the Italy lad was going down already I think.

Not really a clear cut incident for VAR to rule on.

It's a foul anywhere else on the pitch. Definitely on the clumsy side rather than deliberate, but that's life.

True - Bilic had it right when saying we would have been asking for a foul if that had been on one of ours.

Best of both worlds. Correct decision after VAR, stupid England fans can have a moan and a fight about it at the pub after the game.

    Everyone's a winner.

The only thing more idiotic than the current VAR system is bothering to watch an England friendly.

For goodness sake, the referee makes a decision if he awards a penalty or if he doesn't. Either way, it's a decision. All that VAR is designed to do is assist the referee in making a correct decision. It is not the fault of VAR if the decision still turns out to be tricky and the referee still has to use his judgement. It was tricky before the VAR and still tricky after it, but VAR did not make it tricky. All it does it help the ref. If he turns out be a poor ref that is not the fault of VAR.
As to it taking up time and breaking into the flow of the game - that is why it has been introduced sparingly, for only the most important decisions. There are statistics which exist (and which I can't be arsed to look up) on how much (or rather how little) the ball is legally in motion during a game, irrespective of VAR. The effect is miniscule in the big picture of all stoppages. Even so, I think they will get it working quicker and better in due course; not surprisingly they haven't got it perfect straight from the off.
It seems there will always be people against something, just because it is change.
For what it is worth, in my opinion the VAR helped the ref in England v Italy make a correct decision: I'm disappointed because I'm English, but it was a penalty. Tarkowski was a bit unlucky but he trod on his foot and that is a penalty. It was a tricky decision because there was a hint of a movement of the Italian's foot into Tarkowski's path, but I don't think that argument stands up.

But, once again, was it a ‘clear and obvious error’? No, of course not.

We watch the game mainly for these moments, the penalty shouts, the goals, the cards, the controversy. This is where VAR is exactly pitched to interfere and will have the biggest impact on the "flow". I honestly struggle to see why people are so for it, are they all armchair fans?

It was a penalty. It wasn't given as the referee hadn't seen it. It was corrected. System worked fine.

This will be the new stock soundbite for the thicko pundits and fans when a decision goes against England or a big team though.

That’s really interesting, thanks for posting it. I would like to read a similar run-through of the VAR protocols for offsides in the case of a goal being scored. What constitutes a clear error in that case and does the ref have the same option of a second look?

My greatest fear with the use of VAR is that too many goals will be reviewed and the explosion of joy when your team scores will end up being reduced to the feeling you get when your team gets a penalty. Great! We should score but...

As your argument erodes so you resort to insulting the arguer. Indeed, even your insult sounds rather out of date.
I watch it for the football - the complexities, the admirable skills (at this level), the mesmeric movement of the best moves, the empathetic involvement with the game and the accompanying hard-to-acknowledge belief (as many a supporter thinks) that I know better what should be happening out there; I am committed to taking sides with Watford as I identify with them as my life-long club and the excitement and frustration of their successes and failures. And yes, the stuff you mention is a part of all that, too, but a mere part.
But it seems to me that you and your ilk appear to want a sort of confected excitement, attained by deliberately restricting your knowledge of incidents, a bit like a sort of all-in wrestling-lite. So far VAR has increased the controversies you crave, so what are you complaining about?
I would have said I feel sorry for you if you do not not get the sort buzz I get from a game, but you chose to insult me, so instead you can **** off.

Of course, but you can’t tell me that it will be the same celebrating a goal after waiting for x minutes waiting for some bloke miles away to judge that it was valid.

I haven't offered an argument, I merely made a statement that I wanted no part in this load of old ******** and spoke of my contempt for those who disagree on the subject, nothing more.

As for insulting you, I did that purely because I find you a tiresome and sanctimonious old gimmer and that was before your latest, laughable diatribe.

    Thanks.
