    Was it ‘widely reported’?

Troy said again last night in an interview on SSN that he think’s he’s a PL striker. I don’t think that goes hand in hand with ‘asking to leave’. And Leventhal’s intel has proved sketchy at best this summer and is awash with as much rumour and conjecture as anywhere else.

For someone normally so balanced and sensible, must say I’m a bit surprised by your stance on this.

I totally agree. I suffered years of depression due to failed medical procedures. What I put my family through is unforgivable, but in all honesty I was so wrapped up within my woes that I refused or couldn't see what I was doing to everyone. It couldn't be further from the type of person I really am.

I believe I'm being balanced and sensible with my stance on this :) and others are being overly sensitive about a legend. A quick search on google throws up lots of outlets reporting this. I think we'd all agree that he was looking to leave to stay in the prem (which is fine) and didn't find any interest (not surprisingly) and so he has no option but to stay and we have no option but to pay him ? That's fine but I just don't think he will ever get fit enough to make a meaningful contribution this season, partly his fault, and that grates given he is our highest earner and would have happily left had anyone wanted him...

I think the Deeney saga is pretty straightforward. Relegation meant cutting costs and Deeney wanted to carry on playing in the PL. A transfer would have been a good solution for both club and player. Most fans thought so.

Some fans are ridiculously down on Troy's ability. Sure he's slowed up and has been carrying injuries. He can still score though, his passing and hold up play are excellent as is his defending. He's an asset now it's clear he's with us for the time-being at least.

However, the signs are that his behaviour is increasingly maverick and annoying. He's becoming a controversy magnet when we have a coach who wants the players to do their talking on the pitch. And now he is to write for the phone-hacking, soft porn peddling, race-baiting, Taylor-baiting Sun. Frankly he's in danger of making a fool of himself and we don't need that distraction.

Would you play him ? If so who would you drop from the current 11 to play him given Capoue/Hughes/Gray will be available? Or is he a £100k/w option from the bench ?

I think you only have to see some of my previous posts about the guy to know I'm not precious or sensitive about criticism of him! But I don't equate 'wanting to take another chance in the PL if one arrived' as 'asking to leave'...and there is a difference. I didn't like how he went about his business this summer but I think we have to talk about things we know to be factual and saying he would have 'happily left had anyone wanted him', I'm not sure that's true...he's been here a long time regardless of peoples thoughts about him - I'm sure if he left, it would have been with a heavy heart.

A quick search on google throws up lots of articles regurgitating the same thing - not one of them has him 'asking to leave'. Indeed, Ivic always intimated he was part of the clubs plans if/when fit - that doesn't tie in with Leventhal's comments really.

I'm sure his salary is prohibitive in terms of getting a LB or a couple of other needed bodies in the door - but he's not alone in that and he should be blamed no more than others for that. The finances are a broader thing than just Deeney's salary.

I don't think you've disagreed with anything i've said, just put a softer veneer on it. The underlying facts remain the same. He hoped to join a prem club, no suitable offer arose, he's not fit and looks enormous, we continue to pay his fat salary. Not sure who we'd drop to play him, if he ever gets fit/small enough to play.

No he’s not a starter for some while and I’d prefer to watch Pedro any day. As a bench option he’s absurdly expensive and if we can move him on in January so be it. I was merely commenting that it’s all quite straightforward with regard to the club.

His working for the Sun has chipped away at my personal support for him and agree that he could be the wrong personality in the squad now he isn’t the undisputed leader.

His media announcements this week are naive at best and ignorant at worst. If he needs to find another club in the next 12 months, his choices to work with The S*n and TalkSport aren’t going to widen the pool of possible desperate suitors come January. Managers won’t like him digging out clubs/managers/players every week and will be glad they don’t have to deal with him at their club.

There is plenty of time for him to make those media moves once his career is done - but for a player who likely believes he has a couple of years left (at least) at PL/Championship level, it’s frankly the wrong move from him.

A lot of football fans and people within the media actually like Deeney for the way he talks and goes about his business - but I think he will lose a sizeable percentage of support now through working with these outlets.

Just like we signed a LB last year when we had the EPL money? They have to be good enough to play and want to come. Then you have to pay a premium. Agree with him or not, Gino rarely overpays. The one big exception to this was Gray - and I'm sure he still has nightmares about that.

Gray isn't amazing or s bargain but you could argue 2 years ago he helped us to our best finish for years and a cup final. Paid back some of that fee.

I'd say he's our 5th choice striker when Perica is fit.

I very much suspect he will be the first choice striker. He will certainly not go to Birmingham

If fit I'd like to see Troy start some games as his strength and hold up play would be a massive advantage for the team going forward.

Maybe I'm being naive, but going by the Cov game the other day, I don't think we're just going to be bending to big man Troy's will anymore, I certainly don't think he'll automatically be our first choice striker (even if he could be a handful at this level). Certainly won't be going to Brum anyway

Even if he could be a handful at this level, I think we have more than enough strikers who are of a similar standard that ultimately we'd have been much better off getting him off the books to be able to get a left-back in. Easier said than done, mind you!

Says his contract has ended. Turkish media strikes again, as reliable as Andre Gray from 5 yards out.

Though it says he "played" (past tense) for a 2nd league team, which is true - as when he did last play for us we were a 2nd league team.

While the bit about his contract being up raises questions about the story's validity, they do sound confident that a deal is being done - it sounds a bit more than just the usual "club Y are interested and might possibly decide to weigh up a bid in the coming weeks" tabloid rumour puff piece. It's a bit of a random link to pull out of thin air as well.

Also, perhaps it could actually be the case that we've somehow agreed with Troy that we'd mutually terminate his contract if he manages to find a new club? In which case the contract bit of the story could be valid.

Yes I am clutching at straws here.

Cannot see him moving to another country, particularly with a new family. Seems like one of those people that doesn't want to go too far from their roots.

Only way he leaves is if another Premier League club comes in for him... so he's staying.
