Yeah too right. He should absolutely acknowledge another player as captain a couple of days after his manager told him he himself is still captain. What could possibly go wrong?!

Yeah. Thank God we retained Deeney after the Forestieri, Vydra and Tommy Smith deals fell through

Troy talking to the media again. Saying he's been suffering from trauma and mental health problems. If that's the case I have every sympathy for him. With a captain dealing with these type of demons, it's not surprising we haven't played well for a whole season since he got the armband. I doubt anyone could provide stable long term leadership while dealing with these issues. I hope he can find peace. Just hope he doesn't drag WFC down with him.

Not to belittle these type of problems but during this period he manged to leave his family and start a new one so it wasn't affecting him that much.

As a father and husband who suffered adversely with my mental health due to bereavement, let me assure it can have a massive effect on marriages and relationships.

I’ll be critical of Troy because of his mistakes as a player and ‘media personality’ - but the guy should only be praised for speaking openly about his mental health issues. It’s so far from being a matter to be critical of.

I wonder whether we will offer him a deal to pay up his contract now that he has made his long predicted move into sports media. It could be a win win for both parties, but maybe not until January when we should be able to bring in a replacement for him; Cucho maybe?

Apparently he said he was negotiating a salary drop with us - I doubt that comes without an extension. He’s going nowhere now.

Most we can hope for us that he gets fit, gets leaner, gets motivated and doesn’t say anything too stupid on his new show or his new paper column. I won’t hold my breath but I will support him to do so until he doesn’t.

What I am sure of now, is if Ivic doesn’t see the vast majority of the above happen, we now have a manager who simply won’t use him.

Maybe there will be a clause that says he doesn't have to play for us if he's "too busy" with his other commitments.

I hope you're right, and I trust Ivic more than any of our previous HC to not bow to 'Mr Watford', but Troy seemed determined to make an appearance in the Luton game, and did so, despite the fact he clearly was still unfit. AFAIK he didn't pick up any particular knock in the derby(?), but he hasn't been seen since, and isn't even in full training. He just decided he was going to play, and did. Maybe as a sort of send off, agreed with VI and the club, thinking a move was close?

And it's great we've got someone who desperately wants to be a part of that particular match , but much like when he played through injury in the back end of the season, I get the sense this was a self-serving exercise, to be the hero, and boost his personal image, rather than something that was in the best interests of the team. Fortunately for everyone the job was done by the starting XI, and we can look back fondly on Troy giving their defender whiplash.

On talksport today he also said he realised he had a choice between committing to being an impact sub in the PL, a bit-part player, or firing us to promotion - a 'redemption story'. He seems to think he'll be straight back in the team when 'fit', and I hope Vlad is strong enough to do what's best for the team. I was hoping he'd start by confirming Cleverley as club captain when Troy was flashing his lashes to any club with PL status, but unfortunately not.

I'd love it if he proves me and everyone else wrong, gets fit, rediscovers his form and gets 10-15 goals in a rotational role in the squad. Sadly I think his knees are done, and I think he knows that too. Hence why he's firmly getting his post-career plans in place, with his new media commitments.

This is what worries me the most. I think Ivic will put the team first but I'm not sure how Deeney will react. He's been a key part of a dressing room that has undermined several head coaches.

Let's also make no bones about it, he would've gone to a Premier League club as a bit part player but none came knocking. His pride will be hurt and he won't take kindly if he then finds himself to be a bit part player a division lower. It's a very young dressing room now and I'd be worried about his influence if he's disgruntled.

Failure to move his salary out probably cost us 2-3 loan signings inc the LB position. Thanks for your loyalty Troy.

So was probably paying the likes of Welbeck and Janmaat off and there are other high earners still around.

    Gray
    Capoue

    Wasting money on Murray too.

No it isn't. But it's as though he feels he's doing us a favour by staying on here rather than moving in the summer. He must know that he's allowed himself to get out of shape and yet is happily drawing his mahousive wages.

Gray and Capoue will I'm sure contribute this season. I fully expect TD to play a bit part role around his media work.

I hope they do but can see Capoue still leaving in January if the right offer comes in.

Gray will be useful when fit - seems to have gone quiet on that front.

They were trying to move players on to save on salaries, not to just spend the money elsewhere. And we actively tried to sign a LB - Danny Rose rejected the move regardless of Deeney being here. So not moving Deeney on has made no real difference.

I get people want to get in a frenzy about Deeney but not everything is his fault.

  26. The undeniable truth

That's fine - we disagree. Frenzy??? Give your head a wobble. I'm sure we would have signed one of the many LBs we were linked with over the last few days and ,maybe a young prem striker on loan had we freed up Deeney's salary. The Murray signing was clearly to cover TD's exit after he announced he would leave. No-one was interested in signing him as a first choice so he had to come crawling back, tail between his legs. The fact that he is the size he is when he is paid what he is ridiculous and he is ruining his legacy. I really hope Ivic isn't put under pressure to play him ahead of Sarr, Pedro or one of our midfielders.

One of the odder post-pandemic rule-changes they implemented, that one: the whole 'you have to nominate one single target for a position and can only go after them regardless of success or failure the entire window'. What were they thinking, eh? Game's gone.

  28. leighton buzzard horn

Maybe not you but there are plenty of people on here in a frenzy about him, some people are deeply upset he angled for a move and didn't get it...but have welcomed Capoue back with open arms for doing exactly the same thing, in fact one step further by handing in a transfer request.

The Watford fans way means there must always be a boo boy, and it is Deeney's turn. Shame, but it's always been that way and always will be.

I agree some criticism is excessive. I have no issue with him or Capoue wanting to leave but many, inc me, believe that Capoue has much to offer the team to aid a promotion challenge whereas Troy doesn't and if selected will make the team poorer partly as a result of his lack of fitness/weight. His media work/focus and huge ego will act as a distraction. He was brilliant in his day but I really wish he had left in the window and doubt he will add anything positive this campaign whilst sucking cash out of the club.

He certainly didn't. Here are the quotes as published in the BBC website report.

"I honestly don't know if this is going to be my last game at Watford or in the Premier League," said striker Deeney.
"If I do ultimately stop playing for Watford as of now I've had a great run.
"Things happen in football. I have been here 10 years. If it is my time to go, it is my time to go."

  34. Burnsy

Troy Deeney has floated the idea that he might not remain at the club - he never announced he was 'going to leave'.

And again...given the nature that most people went with through the window, including yourself, that we needed to clear players out before we bought replacements, the theory that we 'clearly' brought Murray in as a replacement for Deeney doesn't work when you apply that theory.

I think the wage bill as a whole and the wider budget was what hamstrung us in the window in terms of certain incomings. It's a bit unfair to apportion to blame singularly on Deeney's weekly wage. I just wish we had panicked and bought a LB instead of Glenn Murray.

  35. The undeniable truth

Maybe not immediately post match but it was certainly widely reported that Troy still saw mimself as a premier league striker and that per Leventhal at the time, he had told the club he wanted to leave and the club reluctantly agreed to let him leave if the right offer came in for him.
