At best a championship striker with a purple patch at Watford and a non existant patch at Reading.

For the growth of the club, get rid.

    Well, two purple patches.

The problem is that after scoring goals for fun in the championship fans thought he would be doing the same in the Premiership, if only life was that simple!

And if we don't try we'll never know. Ighalo scored in both why not vydra? Let's not pretend he was given a proper chance at WBA. Would you back Sinclair or success to score over him when neither is a natural goalscorer ?

He's back with Watford so will get my support
If he fits into the new formation and scores bundles then great, he will help Watford to safety
If he doesn't get tried and is shipped off to another club then I will wish him well
If he sulks and looks like he can't be arsed then I will just hope he is shipped out

    Time will tell...

2nd purple patch was when? And the last was?

Are we all forgetting his 3 month "dry" spell in his first season?
Gets named championship player of the season, billy big boots, cant be ****ed with Watford following next season.

Why does any true supporter have any sympathy and appraisal for this type of player?

38 goals in about 90 games, many sub appearances in the 90. Why are you focusing on a dry spell ? The rest was really **** hot then !! So he wanted to play in the prem. Isn't that understandable ?

blimey you lot. They're both good, potentially great strikers. I would say to Walter: keep them both if you can keep them happy. It's a man management thing, there's room in the squad.

Here are the players who can go, in no particular order:
    Arlauskis
    Paredes
    Nyom
    Amrabat
    Pudil
    Belkalem
    Suarez
    Gueds (if necessary)

8 goals in his last 12 appearances (9 starts, 3 sub) in the promotion winning season looks like a purple patch to me. Quite a useful one too as it was a big part of us getting over the line during a high pressured period.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I don't have any problem with him wanting to go to a different club after his first season with us. He was only on loan to us and had just been named the Player of the Season for the division. Why shouldn't he want to play at a higher level? He didn't owe us anything as far as I'm concerned, he just made a decision he thought was best for his career.

This thread was started at lunchtime today and we're on page 5 already. That's the Matty Vydra effect. You're reading this. You love him. You may not believe it's going to work out but you want it to...come on let's give it another try.

Though I can see how your anger towards him blinds you to that.

He agreed to join us on loan for a season and after this loan had expired he decided he wanted to test himself in the Premier League instead of coming back to us in the Championship on another loan or permanently. What exactly is wrong, unusual or billy big boots about that? Are the likes of Ben Foster, Chalobah or Tom Cleverley arrogant traitors as well?

Unlike last year we're actually planning on playing two up top and that means at least two strikers are needed as cover ...

as far as I'm concerned the rest is down to how well Matty trains/plays until September because I really think he has as good a chance as anyone.

It was agreed by the Pozzos that he would join us on the 2nd season. Gianfranco was expecting him. Instead he had other asprirations, we went backwards & recruitment replacements were hastely subverted.
Sure he came back for another championship season, but only after he couldnt make it in the premier league.

Just not the right level. Move on.
People are ysing 3 year old videos of what a player he is. Exactly my point.

If we weren't about to embark on a fast breaking 3-5-2 ship I might agree ... but we are and we all know just who fits that bill to a tee.

Two seasons at Watford that have been a huge success. Wanted to play in PL after the first season and who wouldn't. Didn't get much game time so came back to us and played a major part in getting us promoted. Signs 5 year deal and gets shipped off to a sh1t Reading side while we struggled with 2 strikers all season. Not done much wrong in fairness. Comparing him to Ighalo is pointless, hugely different players and they're not competing for a place. 2 up front this season it appears so at least 4 strikers if not 5 required. Best finisher I've seen since Mighty Mo and you don't lose that ability so I would keep him and I expect him to stay unless we sign another forward which seems unlikely. It's all about taking your chance when it comes like Ighalo did and maybe Vydra will do the same just hope it's with us still

I think any player next to Deeney in the Championship would look good.

Vydra was excellent for the first three or so months (and the play off semi). Easily Premiership quality. However he picked up an injury and I also agree he has lost a yard of pace. He's still quick, but he used to run past players like they weren't there, but was caught by one or two defenders in his second Watford spell.

He did score a decent number of goals in his second spell, and many on here are quick to point out that many of them were from substitute appearances. Well, that was because despite the goals, he never really shone and was nowhere near as good as the first. He never made a really convincing case to start. Whilst the man has many flaws, Ighalo has a lot more to his game than Vydra.

The argument in my head is not whether we keep both of them, but whether we get rid of both of them. I'd have sold Iggy for such a crazy price.. Iggy grasped his year in the Premiership whilst Matty didn't, and Iggy did so as Vyds looked out of his depth in the league below.

I'd loan Matty out if I thought it would help him. Time to cut him loose, with a large sell in fee, I'm afraid.

Genuinely find it interesting that even though this post is less than a day old, but it's already up to five pages.

Has any other player invoked so much debate ?

This is something I'll likely post on Forum Suggestions in due course, but this kind of thread highlights the absurdity of us having two separate forums for Watford-related discussion (especially given how little of this thread has to do with actual transfers). Why can't all transfer talk go onto Watford Chat along with the rest of the topics there, as a single entity for all WFC talk? It's a given that discussion about any football club will involve talk about transfers, and there is inevitably going to be overlap with more general issues (the player's merits/limitations now vs then, past and current players of comparative skill etc) as this thread has proved. Our fanbase has never been very big, and given how quiet WC is when we're not playing competitive games, and the disproportionate number of threads/posts on this board, we could attract a lot more posters if they see all the WFC discussion on one forum.

Two great seasons for us already and he's only 24. Keep him as an option in the squad, give him time in the pitch as sub or injury cover for the main front two and let's see if he takes the chance. If not, sell in January. His resale value certainly won't be great now after the illadvised reading loan. The only reason for moving him out that I can see is if we buy a better striker and that's unlikely given the cost of a decent forward and the fact that TD & OI are staying.

I don't think that Vydra would have been as ineffective as Ighalo was from Christmas which was probably the worse run of poor form I have seen in over 50 years following WFC. Lack of basic control, poor simple passes - almost always behind the player, greedy with terrible decision making and poor finishing. Hopefully Iggy will have got it out of his system and will be better under a coach who I believe will actually want us to score and who has a reputation of getting the best out of forwards.

But I think Vydra is the best finisher we have seen at the is club since Mo Johnston - whatever the reasons, it seems to be such a waste.

    :dismay:

I know not very enlightening response from me but it matches NathFC response to a comment on another thread.
I am a fan of both Vydra and Fozzi. Last chance for Vydra I hope he can shine for us but expect that will not be the case.

Vydra is a fantastic player when the weather is right, and he's feeling good, and he's got his lucky socks on, and he's in a winning team, up against an immobile defence, with Troy Deeney behind him doing all the dog work, feeding him pinpoint through balls.

When criteria is met, he is indeed s**t hot striker.

Yeah. 36 goals in however many games really indicates someone who only turns up once in a blue moon

  35. 38 in 92 when playing with Deeney

22 in 101 when playing without Deeney

Doesn't take a genius to work out the common denominator
