Just realised he’s called James Morris, aka released next year
As I have said for a while now, its not just Leventhal thats the issue with FTRE podcasts - his co-presenters are just as bad as they never, ever critically challenge anything that is said or disagree. So if Leventhal says 'Watford fans think we are PSG' the other presenters should immediately call that comment out and say it's preposterous. But they don't, they laugh along in admiration that they have an ex-SSN presenter gracing them with his presence, one that they clearly don't dare question or dispute.
Leventhal's had a bit of a weird obsession with mentioning that deal all summer. Almost as if he's being paid to do so!
Interesting that you put 1995 as the cut-off point for that period. That was when the top flight was reduced from 22 to 20 teams, and while that may be more a coincidence than anything, it was also when the Premier League became much more like it is today. It was around that time that QPR (one of the last of the smaller clubs along with Norwich and Wimbledon to really hold their own at the top of the table) were relegated and Shearer went to Newcastle for a record-breaking (by some distance in this country) £15m.
Also during that period there was less of a monopoly at the top of the table, as witnessed by the fact that only six different teams have won the title since 1995, compared to nine in the same period before that (I'm actually surprised the difference isn't greater).
Here you are @GoingDown, as well as anyone else who might be intrigued - The transcript of certain sections on Deeney from the most recent FTRE pod, for your delectation:-
[To begin with, one of the other presenters says that they got the feeling/Troy had said/hinted previously in interviews that the reason he never left the club before was that he enjoyed being the main man around the club, not just as a player and on the pitch, but as a character at the club as a whole, and Leventhal’s response was ‘I think you’re right.’]
Other Presenter -
Bonus Leventhal content on full backs and James Morris -
(Seconds after this, when gassing up the plethora of centre back options, Leventhal adds ‘and you also then have Adam Masina, if need be, to play as a three if you’ve dropped out’ - the answer to the dilemma that the other presenters themselves bring up; that fans are concerned by the performances of Masina and that we know WTE is going to the AFCON, is given by those same presenters, naturally, as again ‘still having time to bring in a free agent if they think it’s necessary’ or signing another centre back in January. Perfect! It just makes so much sense - the notoriously forgiving value-zone of the January window, to provide a fix for an issue we could never have known we would be facing when we were able to correct it, such as during an earlier transfer window, like the one that was open for the entirety of the past two months, and closed two days ago.)
Listening to the last few minutes Leventhal's performance actually gets worse, hard to believe as that is - I've genuinely never had less respect for his viewpoint than I do at this moment.
Also worth nothing that he posted this on Twitter yesterday evening:
And then proceeded not to even acknowledge, let alone answer, a single one of the questions he was asked in reply.
Great theatre in a soviet propaganda way. My favorite part of the entire farce was on the twitter feed after. Someone questioned if Kiko, Cathacart, Kaba, Masina were the answer given previous premier league performance levels over a season. May even have been LouOrns.
The answer: "You are talking in the past. Adam talks of the future. And what could be"
Thanks for that!
This is just so ridiculous whichever way you look at it, even if it's intended to be objective; even if there is something true about that, it seems grossly exaggerated while at the same time worrying that such a situation was allowed to happen and escalate. No disrespect to Troy who did great things with the team (mostly up to the end of 2015/16) and beyond, but we're talking about a 32-year-old footballer, and not a particularly bright one at that, not a larger-than-life 45+ manager who's achieved greatness at the biggest clubs in the world. I'm not sure what it was about him that made him so influential - it certainly wasn't his performances on the pitch in the last five years or even purely his leadership qualities - maybe it was his rags to riches success story and him making the most of his limitations that made him set an example, but plenty of other players at Watford have done that.
Is that a new phrase invented? Well, at least he acknowledged that Femenia and Ngakia might be better than Cathcart...
So to use Masina as a last resort centre back we'd need three of the four centre backs to be unavailable. So their suggestion is to then play a back three? How does that work @Jon G?
Imagine, you guys could all do this job better than him - which apparently involves getting paid for little or no effort - and you don’t. I think he’s the winner here.
Why the hell are you asking me? I haven’t got a coaching badge.
You've been earmarked to take over when Xisco gets the boot.
Coaching badges not required!
Why on earth would I take a pay cut?
For the job security?
And to think, you were whining about repetitive jokes being for children, right here, just a day or two ago. Sorry we don't like your pod, Jon
Well, I didn’t whine, this is not a repetition, and I don’t have a pod, that you have listened to. Other than that, an unerringly accurate reply.
Thanks mate, this is fantastic. I'd ask you to do it every week but I could never suggest someone torture themselves to this level.
This podcast is just a pointless human centipede. The only way you’ll get access to inside information from the club is if you agree to never share it and become a clapping seal for the clubs PR department.
Surely a podcast where you share no actual inside information, but actually have some real opinions to give is better than a podcast where you also share no actual inside information, but spend the entire time licking the clubs ring piece?
From the upshot:
Well yes, now that you mention it, the Watford Buzz Pod is far superior to FTRE!
Coincidence, Brexit thing, same as chicken and milkshakes.
Just heard a few minutes of the podcast. Can someone please pass me the toe uncurlers?
Little Troy feature on the Brum v Derby preamble right now
Thought it would be weird watching him play for someone else tonight but it honestly wasn't. Just seemed right.
Was nice to see him come on and get good reception. He seems happy. I wish him all the best.
He did not look any better than he has been of late
However lets hope playing for the team he has always supported will give him a second lease of life and a decent end to his playing career.
He looked awful. Luckily that's not our problem anymore!
I started to dread him coming on, because despite the obvious lack of quality in either team (it’s the championship) there was still obvious pace in both sides and the game was played at a speed Troy just isn’t at anymore. Sadly when he did come on that was all too evident. I genuinely do hope he makes an impact there, but he does look a busted flush.
True but no doubt we will have regular updates and views on his performances.
More so the current strikers we do have.
He will tear up that league. Just look at his stats from 7 years ago. It was very lucky we managed to get by last season given he was injured for so long.
Seriously, good luck to the guy and hope it works out for him. We may well face him next season in the champ. Would be fun watching him try to bully Sierralta (or maybe Mariappa after S is sold).
Hopefully for Birmingham it’s just early days.
Good luck for the season Troy...
Smashed a penalty home tonight in a narrow 1-4 loss to Fulham
That could give Kafka a run for his money...
A lot of Brum fans saying performances and results have gone downhill since he joined...
