    Yes there was....

    A certain lockdown incident.

Gray might well have started the game v Southampton at home but he decided to break the Government rules and have a party instead ruling him out of the game and probably breaking any trust Pearson had.

Pearson was never going to play Pedro in a million years so it was left to Deeney or Welbeck.

Both probably not fully fit tbh.

BTW Deeney had COVID and was in hospital for 5 days - that is why he was worried about re-starting and the club were.

Mind you all to be made to look silly by Gray and co of course.

I bet everyone else just sat there and laughed at us after that.

Welbeck should have been starting, not Gray.

All I am saying is that over a spell of 5 years, there was never adequate competition for Deeney (save for a brief spell of 10 games where Welbeck was fit). Whatever Deeney's shortcomings were, there is a significant amount of responsibility to be laid at the Board's door.

Jesus Christ. I always wondered whether Manatleisure was on the wind-up about Gray or if he actually genuinely believed what he was saying.

But stating that a lockdown-breaking Gray should have been starting after the restart just confirms he’s on the wind-up. Just no way on earth anyone could believe that.

Well played sir. You had some of us going for a good while.

Totally the right decision, but many great memories. I hope Troy does well at Brum.

At one point I did consider it might be Andre himself, but then thought there's no chance he'd remember a password, and chances are he'd miss the "Remember password?" tick box.

    Ross Jenkins (142 goals).

Troy is our 4th highest goalscorer behind Luther, TB and Ross. Troy Deeney ended his Watford career 46 goals behind Luther Blissett. Never got close to the great man.

In the highly unlikely event Troy returns, its even more unlikely he'd get to take the 50 or so penalties he'd need to break Luther's record. Luther's record has stood for nearly 30 years, it ain't getting broken anytime soon.

Well he was probably on the bench for the game after ?

I know Grealish got away with it but he was a key player…

Exactly this. Lots of people were getting upset at Deeney being here and starting but the truth is the club should have upgraded on him a few years back. We now finally have some decent attacking options and Deeney has subsequently moved on.

The club should have upgraded on Deeney years ago and didn't. The club w4nked away £30million on Gray. Both of those things are firmly at the feet of the board and nobody else.

Without doubt, their biggest mistake in the 10 years or so they've been our owners. 6 years in the prem and 2 promotions but the money wasted on Gray and the delay in replacing Troy will always act as the biggest reminder that they don't get all decisions right.

I think they expected and hoped Success would be the Deeney replacement!

Things got so desperate they went for Glenn Murray ..

There's been a disappointing amount of vitriol in amongst the tributes on this thread, albeit rowed back a little when challenged. I'd like to add my voice to those saying thanks to Troy. I couldn't say it any better than the considered and articulate Matt Rowson. So I won't - https://bhappy.wordpress.com/2021/09/01/watfords-number-9/

I have to admit I have not read the article you have given the link to as it looks very long, but all in all TD has been a great servant to this club, though he possibly took a little too long to realise his best days were behind him.

He is without a doubt a WFC legend and I wish him well for his future career wherever that might take him, who knows he might even end up back here as a coach. However I am sure he will always be welcome back at The Vic in any capacity (though perhaps not as a player anymore ;))

Someone suggested on here that lining up Brum as a pre-season friendly for next season could double up as a tribute to TD and a fitting farewell from the fans. I think this would be a great idea, and I would not be surprised if such a game could possibly have the biggest pre season game attendance ever seen at The Vic.

Honestly, for us to be a reported 100m plus in debt and have very little to show for it in assets, apart from Sarr, is baffling.

Very interesting debate being had by the Geordies on (the return of) CR7 - which I think could be applied to TD:

Also the Geordies are very unhappy with this transfer window's business...

I think they could win a cup or be top 8 in the league and still hate Bruce/Ashley .

They really want a Keegan type personality back and his style of football .

I don't think it's that, they liked Rafa and his football, while not as bad as Bruce's, was certainly not all-out attack, I think they just want some kind of ambition beyond survival. Bruce and Ashley are both scabby people as well, who often put the name of Newcastle through the mud

Their squad basically looks exactly the same as it did for the second half of last season, which was better than it was in the first half, but I can see why they'd be very disappointed by it

As much as I hate Simon Jordan, as a former owner, he did give it a fresh look when commenting on it for me.

Each place in the PL isn’t worth a huge amount of money. But it takes a fair bit of expenditure to rise up the table. And Newcastle fans want superstar players and a big name manager - it’s unrealistic to expect that. Mike Ashley doesn’t have the money. Yet he still does spend on them but they fail to recognise this. Considering Ashley wants to sell the club, they are lucky he still puts his hand in his pocket at all in a way - they would tumble out of the PL and further if he didn’t. There’s plenty of clubs who have down there who can evidence that.

Long and short of it is Ashley can’t bankroll what Newcastle fans want. He could spend £200m like Moshiri at Everton and they’d still likely only reach 8th-12th - the financial reality is that small increase in the prize money doesn’t make it worth it at all so whilst he wants to sell, he’s doing a decent job of keeping them ticking over and staying up each year and ensuring there’s a good base from any new owners to start from in the PL.
