The gunman in Australia is an Iranian asylum seeker, I see.

Why do people seek help and then turn on those that provided it to them?

 

Probably because he was arrested for several secual assaults.

Looks like they've gone in shortly after 5 hostages fled - lots of gunfire and explosions, four people left on stretchers.

 

As things are now unfolding rapidly/have been resolved in Sydney can we have a considered presentation on 'grammatical standards in the modern media' and 'menstrual change in the wake of a typhoon' while we've still got a chance?

 

So it is over, CNN reports 2 dead and several seriously injured.

Very sad indeed if it's true that people have died.

It's important for the media to focus on the casualties as people and the sadness rather than glamourise it all and focus on the body count and the gunman.

 

Most don't to be fair.

 

I find it a bit sad in truth. Having to find with a random stranger as you don't feel safe?

I use to commute daily into London, and each day I'll see the same faces. Always managed to strike up a conversation with a few of them, and it made the commute much better. Why can't more people do this? You try talking to a stranger on your commute and many look at you as if you're crazy.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice people are reaching out, but it's sad talking to others on your commute is frowned upon.

 

There must be a "double shot" pun available here for the witty.

But on a serious note, thoughts must go out to the families and friends of the two victims.

I agree with all of that. I just thought it was a very positive response to a specific problem.

Yep, people don't really talk to each other on the commute in my experience (92-95) and if you do pipe up then you often get a negative reaction as if you're some sort of nutter. All I really remember hearing was the clatter of the train on the track, tinny headphone leakage and the rustle of the Daily Telegraph.

 

Bump to note that Kobani has now been completely cleared of IS, cause for celebration indeed.
