Sean Dyche - What do we think now?

I will be the first to admit it that I was not happy when he got the job and I thought he only got the job because he was the "cheap option" but from day one I have backed him and never wanted him sacked (I will admit this was only because I did not think anyone else could do a better job and would cost us money).

Has he been lucky or have Watford unearthed another Gem in giving a job to a young inexperienced British Manager?

I dont want to get carried away with the draw at West Ham but I really think this bloke may turn out to be another good manager and my gut feeling is he will be a bit more loyal than the last two Managers and not **it on the club if he did move on.

I still think there are certain fans who will happy to see him fail and say "I told you so"

Within minutes of him announcing the team you had posts claiming "he had lost the plot"

I just dont think the Watford Public or the media are giving him the credit he deserves when you look at what he has had to work with.

We went toe to toe with a club that pays one of its players £80,000 a week?

In Dyche we trust or not?

Considering what he has to work with he gets 7.5/10 from me.

Some good tactics used. Seems flexible and willing to make early subs at times. Some adaptation of style and a willingness to change as is necessitated by play. Seems to have the respect of the players and is protecting the youth.

As soon as Malky left I immediately wanted Dyche to take over as I'm a firm believer of continuity and he'd been 2nd in command last year so was the best man for the job IMO. I think he's done incredibly well and considering the state the squad was in when he took over, we have depth in most positions and are pushing for a mid-table finish. The problem with new managers is they need time and I for 1 am impatient at times and want Watford to achieve better then they are. But I would rather be improving on league positions year after year then over achieving, get promoted and come straight back down again like we have done twice already. I'm a big admirer of the way Dyche isn't afraid to change things around and is looking at the opposition first before choosing the squad. The West Ham game was a great example of this as we stopped them playing freely in midfield and they resorted to route 1 footie all game.

I'm 100% behind Dyche and have high hopes that we will finish this season on a high. Onwards and upwards. COYH!

I can honestly say I believe Dyche will be a better manager than Malky.

I for one am bemused by this general belief that Malky is such a good manager, he nearly took a team with Cleverley, Lansbury, Cowie, Graham, Helguson, and Buckley down. That team would probably win the league this season, second season, yes we started brilliantly - but his stubbornness, personal issues with players, and ego resulted in us actually probably finishing lower than we will this season. Sean Dyche is learning, and its easy to forget how disastrously his tenure as manager began - I mean we were really woeful, but it's clear to see he's a manager that can get results and with a really, really poor team, he's beginning to really impress me with his flexibility in team selections, his recent signings, and his work on set plays. We have a poor team, partly due to his first few signings - who have proved to be very poor, but he's getting some brilliant performances out of them - Dyche will be given funds this summer, if he can build a squad around the 3 or 4 real quality players we have - I can see him really pushing us on.

Just to add, 2 or 3 first team players who have since left the club - have all told me that Dyche was really the man behind Malky's success - and if it wasn't for him, Malky could easily have failed.

I was happy with the appointment at the time as I knew he was very highly thought of behind Malky. It's no fluke that we have had four novice managers and they've all worked out as successful appointments. That goes down to the judgement of Graham Taylor and he has once again been proved spot on. Dyche struggled at first and I think there was a real watershed moment at half time in the Leicester away fixture. Since then the team has by and large done very well with a couple of wobbles along the way. I like what Dyche says and the vision he has. If he stays loyal, we could really build something good with this guy, but he does need funds and to be allowed to purchase a couple of quality forward players in the summer. I think you'll see Watford heading up the table if that was allowed to happen. He is a real football person, and the players totally respect him. He is not scared to drop the high profile players either and they all know, if you don't perform you are rested. I'm very happy with his first season in charge. He has steadied the ship, and all but kept us up, so his first year remit has been achieved. Well done Dychey and I'm very happy you've proved the doubters wrong.

I agree about your gut feeling that he will be more loyal than MM/BR. And if he does leave us i believe he will be a lot more honest with us fans and will have respect for the club afterwards unlike MM. Tactically i feel he is stronger than MM was with us and i do feel he has done much better than most expected, given the squad/budget we have.

I didn't mind Dyche getting the job.

I did grow VERY frustrated at his failure to bring the kids through early on in the season, but he has explained why and it appears to be paying off in most cases. The football isnit amazing but the work effort is, and he doesn't seem afraid to take someone out the team.

Happy enough with him being in charge right now

He didn't exactly "hit the ground running" at the start of the season but he soon "found his feet" and has "gone from strength to strength" since then. He looks like "one for the future" & I'm really "made up for the lad".

(I love post match interviews, they've taught me everything I know)

He deserves to be managing a club with better fans.

Rebuilding a club with a new owner who knows nothing about football, a squad which had just lost - quite literally - all of its best players including its top goalscorer and its top two assist makers and had a first team squad of just 8 players and losing all of the major backroom team, with no managerial experience?

Absolutely transparent in everything he says and does, doesn't hide behind excuses and is always honest with fans, who sit waiting at their keyboards with the curtains drawn for the day he loses 0-3 so they can jump on here and complain endlessly.

We lost our main targets to Cardiff and a whole load of others who ended up going elsewhere for more money. We have a decent squad depth at the moment in terms of numbers and the kids are only featuring when they are ready rather than when they have to fill in through lack of players, and he is very forthright on his assessment of our young players and doesn't pander to the fans who want to see the U18s rolled out for every league game.

Done a great job in his first season and we have a great team spirit and work ethic. He will have learnt a huge amount this year and if in the summer we can trim the loose ends from the squad and add a little bit of quality - be it from our own ranks or elsewhere - there is no reason not to look higher next year. We won't be losing all of our best players in the summer since they have all already gone, so hopefully Dyche will only have to contend with the departure of Mariappa and probably Taylor, fingers crosses, and we will be even stronger next year.

9.5/10. With the size of the rebuilding job that needed to be done on our budget, many managers would have failed miserably - let alone in their first season of management. Yes, sometimes we are s hit and lose miserably, but that happens. In general we have been very good this year all things considered.

I was happy for him to be given a chance when he was appointed as I thought he deserved it and knew the players etc. I'll be the first to admit that I was osing patience with him before the Millwall game where we won 2-1, the football was dire and so were the results.

I echo what most people have said and think he's doing a great job. I also think that he'll stay longer than other managers have, because with all due respect he's a lot less 'glamorous' than Malky or Todgers, but i think I like him better than both as a manager he has a good sense of humour and is honest in interviews most of the time.

we have lost several times recently by large scores and I think most on here havent complained, but have rather accepted that it happens from time to time and given him a break. I think most can see what he is trying to do and can see the determination in the players. Hell Ive even stopped slagging off Emu (he is told not to score)

Unlike the morons on the Wobby site, and the less than INTELLECTUAL comments on the GloryHorns WEBSITE. (I know a few here post on both, including - no names mentioned - certain people who cut and paste their comments on 3 or 4 sites)

Back on topic, 9 out of 10. Some of his substitutions (or lack of) still seem a bit bizarre (why not bring on some fresh attacking legs for the last 10 minutes last night when Deeney had run out of steam and Big Chris was Big Chris - we spent injury time literally booting it as far as we could up the pitch hoping it would go into touch). Interesting Kane's comment about the power behind the throne!

I've never been in doubt of Dyche as our manager. Even in the first month there was something with the tactics that made me post on here that we'd have no problems surviving this season, it was obvious the effort from the players was there from the start. I was pretty shocked at a lot of the negative stuff on here about him after less than 10 games in charge. I hope there have been some lessons learnt, (but I very much doubt it).

It's going to be a successful first season in management for Dychey. Staying up was the objective and we look like we're going to do that comfortably. He's a top bloke and every interview with a player these days revolves around the team spirit at the club. A few quality signings in the summer together with a few of the kids kicking on added to the mentality the squad now has means we could be onto something very good next season. COYH!

He has done an exceptional job and it is testament to him as a manager that despite all of the turmoil the club have been through over the summer and throughout the season he has managed to build and mould a good Championship side that look safe by early March, work hard for each other and their manager and are very hard to beat.

TBF He isn't afraid to make changes when required and isn't one to make excuses (unlike Mackay) if we play badly generally or get that excited when we win which is a good thing I feel.

Sounds like he keeps the players on their toes anyway.

We are never going to be perfect and yes some of the signings haven't been great but as I say he hasn't been scared to drop whereas some managers would keep them in the team because they signed them.

GoE - Looks like you've sussed me out then!

I was against the appointment but have to admit that I was very wrong.

Whilst I can't see him ever being a top Premier manager, he has to date proved himself to be competent at this level. After a dodgy start he has proved to be able to motivate the players and is now getting more flexible with his tactics. Perhaps Ian Woan has had a major influence on Dyche's improvement over the last couple of months.

After the success of Murray, hopefully next season Dyche will have more faith in the youngsters and give the likes of Thompson, Bond and Assombogola their chance even if it is only from the bench. He needs to clear out some of the dead wood such as Emu. Mirfin, Garner and even Taylor. The latter is still a very good player but I think it is time to give Bennett his chance and we would save a considerable amount of wages on someone who is probably not going to force Nosworthy out of the side.

I was happy with the appointment at the very beginning and felt it was the 'Watford way'. I admit that after a very worrying start and a couple of games to tip me over the edge (Saints away in particular) I genuinely thought we were headed in one direction and one direction only and that way down. I didn't call for his head nor did I boo him at games, but I was one of those who came on here stating we needed to change something behind the scenes because it's just not working. I am glad I have been proved wrong! Dyche is a top bloke and has the clubs best interests at heart. Malky had a good start to his reign which was something that fell in his favour. Thankfully, I think Sean's bad start will stave off any interest in him for a while and it could well work out nicely for us!

I was and am comfortable with Dyche's appointment. For a club as ourselves its pretty stupid really to look at; big name managers, below average managers from the lower leagues or young managers from other places. I wasn't totally surprised with a "poor" start. He's obviously learning as he goes along. The key thing he's done is build a squad of players who can come in and do a job for a mid table championship team, i include iwelumo, garner and Forsyth here by the way. Some people imo, confused this with having a journeyman squad with no quality or hope.

What I would like to think is that next season we can find a formula to be a little more creative and dangerous than we've seen this. The problem here, is that this is an opposite of the current team, who get plaudits for hard work, commitment and graft. It might be interesting to see how much patience some folk have if we continue to be a lower half team that struggles to score many goals... Good luck to Dychey.

As someone posted earlier, the lack of outright criticism on this board when we lost heavily a couple of times recently demonstrates that we understand the restraints he is operating under and the generally good job he is doing. I think he is better than Malky and much prefer his honesty in interviews than Malky's, often embarrassing, excuses.

Unlike some posters on this thread, I have never thought we have a poor side. For everybody's sake, I hope we can keep the nucleus of this side together, and with an addition or two up front and I genuinely think that, as Dyche gets more experience, we can launch a real challenge next season.

Nervous at the appointment but he seems to be picking things up quickly & learning from his mistakes, something that Malky never did.

Having spent the whole day at the training ground with Malky last year I agree that it was Dyche doing almost all of the coaching

My expectations from the beginning of the season were we would do well to avoid relegation. With the turmoil which comes with 11 (or how many) new players, the squad was always going to take time to blend.

But it seems the investment in time given to bring together a slightly bigger squad (of senior players) than we have been used to is paying dividends now. Look at our bench against West Ham and see how many relatively strong names were on the list. Yeates didn't event make it.

This is a credit to Dyche who seemingly understand we need a squad for the whole season and not just 2/3s. He's taken time to develop his team and his football but is slowly getting there. He's learning and is showing a willingness to adjust if required. Nosworthy's illness as example - he knew we needed a strong tall presence defending set pieces and promptly dropped Garner - who has been playing well - for Iwelumo who may move as swiftly as a statue but when it comes to winning headers he does okay ;)

I think Dyche is doing a good job. Not great - great would see us battle for promotion/playoffs - but a good solid job. One I expected him to do and I have now been disappointed. The big challenge is the coming off-season. We need to clear out some of the less effective players and some youngsters who haven't proven themselves good enough (Bryan, Mingoia etc). Furthermore we need to bring in a few players who can improve the starting line-up. Players will leave who have been at the center of our starting lineup for a long time - Taylor, Loach, Mariappa (probably) and they must be replaced. Taylor is having signed Nos, Loach - if we can keep the PIG, but Mariappa MUST be replaced if he leaves.

Let's get to 52 and go on from there - but for me, right now - it is a pass with flying colours for Dyche!

I have kept my opinions on SD to myself for now - the board must have seen something they liked in him and some of the testimonials from past and present players must have convinced them he was a safe pair of hands to look after the team.

He went about his work quietly and without fuss, no hissy fits or constant berating of referee's and he is definitely building something here, that could develop into something very enjoyable to be part of.

For me the standout moment in his managerial career to date was the way he introduced Sean Murray into the team against Spurs, that took guts, and it was a risk - Now, though it looks like a master stroke. SM is settling in nicely, he will have his ups and downs but he is a very exciting prospect.

So in summary, SD is doing just fine. He seems to have a good sense of humour and he doesn't seem averse to poking fun at himself. 9/10

Given the restrictions within which he has had to work, and bearing in mind this is his first managerial post, I reckon he's done a decent job. OK it's very easy to criticise some of his early signings, but fair do's the bloke has had a very steep learning curve and has progressed well with his decision making.

I think when you take into account the ownership upheaval as well, then I reckon we have reason to feel more confident for the club going forward than for a number of years and both Dyche and Bas deserve credit for this.

Im not saying it isnt a good thing, I think it actually gets us a number of additional points each year. I just find it a little frustrating, all the same, at the start of every season, the pundits seem to just look at the relative size of the clubs and then have us always in the bottom 6 seemingly, when we, more often than not, end up mid table. It's is almost as if they actually know nothing about football and especially the championship and how it works and look at the prem teams coming down and think theyll be near the top, then all the bigger name teams like Notts Forest, Leicester, Leeds and again place them above us and pick 2 of the 3 coming up from league 1 and put them above us, then they cant work out the remainder so as we are small and "our luck must run out sometime" as we have no big names they put us in the bottom 6
