Could this lead to a war?

Russia seem to showing far to much aggression!

Any excuse for Russia now to invade the Crimea and they will do. What might the consequences be for Russia in the international community if they do invade? There are reports they may well extend the invasion to the more pro-russian areas of mainland Ukraine.

Interesting situation, and reminds me of when Georgia and Russia had a scuffle a few years back. Strangely we haven't heard much more about that, but I believe the Russians are still occupying part of Georgia? Correct me if I'm wrong!

Not sure but I remember they did issue russian passports to anyone who wanted them and used that as a way of saying look we're just protecting russian citizens. No doubt they're doing the same in Crimea.

Apparently people keep saying that Crimea is majority Russian, but the last census was in 2001 and since them thousands of Muslim Tartars have come back from deportation so nobody really knows who the majority is.

I find it really odd that Russia want Crimea back, but didnt they give it to Ukraine in the past?

Ukraine will split and Crimea will join Russia - I think the Ukranians will be happy with that and to be honest, their failing ecenomy should be a bigger priority to them right now, they're incredibly close to defaulting.

The economy is the underlying theme in the whole crisis. You don't get mass protests during boom periods, it just doesn't happen.

Russia's interior ministry is inviting former Ukrainian policemen who leave Ukraine to join their ranks in the Russian provinces. They can sign up after acquiring Russian citizenship, it says.

    It begins.

I ****ing hate Russians, for good reason. But I think Putin is showing restraint here actually.
You have to understand the mindset and the culture of the people there. Ukraine means hinterland/borderland ie: it's kind of the borders of Russia, more so than any other conquered territory. Eastern Ukraine and the crimea is ethnically quite Russian already.

It's obvious they are playing silly buggers and sending troops not in uniform etc.

What will ultimately decide this will be the money deals behind the scenes that we aren't seeing

Here is a Russians view on the situation, someone I know:

Western interference in a very large and resource wealthy country. Trying to reduce Russian influence in the area as Eastern part where all the industry is consider themselves Russian. Plus they don't like that Russia has a large Naval base in the area

I just wish we (as in our government) would butt out of it. Ukraine is very much within the Russian sphere of influence and they're never likely to allow revolution to happen and a Western friendly government to pop up right on their border. I suspect if push came to shove they would be happy to fight a proxy war with the West over the matter. It's not one we're going to win, nor is the public backing to even intervene, so why don't we just sit back and watch the fireworks? What I find particularly ironic is we bang on about issues with energy security due to the amount of natural gas that is piped from Russia through the former Eastern bloc, and then every months we let the US stoke come controversy or other and make things worse. We should tell the US to feck off.

Is there a big river in Crimea?

If there is, Justin Timberlake could really capitalise on that!

The population is mainly ethnic Russian. And as for the scuffle in Georgia that was Sarkashvili emboldened by the presence of American troops launching an attack on Tskinvali and Russian peacekeepers which were beaten back and led to a humiliating loss for the Georgians.

South Ossetia and Abkhazia are now autonomous regions with Russian protection and the citizens have Russian passports. Some Russian troops still occupy border areas of Georgia.

In that conflict the media were quick to report it was Russia as the aggressor when it was not the case. And why should the Crimea not secede to Russia or indeed eastern regions of Ukraine under self determination.

NATO was quick to apply the principle to Kosovo especially Germany. So what is the difference here ?

I find it highly ironic in a week where Germany arrests former concentration camp guards that it and the EU try to lend credence to elements of those in the Maidan who are virulent nationalists who hold the likes of Stepan Bandera as a hero.

Obama wisely has decided to leave this one alone for the time being though some in the White House also need to calm down with their descriptions of the EU and Russia. Hypocrites should not throw stones Victoria Nuland. Not after deposing legitimate regimes in Chile and installing people like Pinochet and well Afghanistan. That turned out well didn't it.

The lease remains until 2042 and like Kaliningrad for the Baltic fleet will remain in perpetuity. Russia will not let those bases slip away for strategic reasons. Khruschev gave away the Ukraine so to speak and Lenin added to it's territory and parts of Poland were added in the west. At the time it was given away the notion of seperate national identities was moot so it was an empty gesture at the time.

I can't see a full scale war yet, although if they give millions of Russian speakers Russian citizenship they will have an excuse! The Russians have got several major economic cards they can play first, knowing that the west is unlikely to intervene militarily.

The Russians will show the west enough respect that they will construct a pretence for military intervention

" oh look at the poor Russian citizens suffering in Ukraine, that is DEFINETLY the reason we are intervening" it's cute they even pretend to care what we think; it's progress.

And by progress I mean even the east is now media savvy.
They do what they want and tell their people what to think

I don't think it'll go into an all-out war. For all the possible combat flash points around the world between more than one country, none have really developed into a war and I get the feeling that this won't either. However this has really exposed the huge divisions in Ukraine between the Russian-speaking Ukrainians and the Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians. Unfortunately with Russia sticking their nose in this (and then some), the possibility of a split of Ukraine looks more likely. However that would be logistic hell for both sides and as much as emotions seem to be running high, I don't think many want to see a split Ukraine.

Then again, if Russia continues to strut its stuff militarily then and continues to stick its nose in what is undeniably an independent sovereign state then I feel more and more Russian-speaking Ukrainians will lean towards a split Ukraine.

They are not just Russian speakers they are as with other satellite states around Russia such as Latvia and Kazakhstan ethnic Russians. We are all so keen to espouse the idea of self determination but apparently not for these people as it does not tie in with the strategic ideals that the powers that be are playing.

How would the US administration like Russia poking it's affairs into Mexico for instance. It barely tolerated what was going on in Venezuela but Russia cannot do the same and more so given it's historical and cultural links that go centuries deep ?

They should allow the Crimea to secede by democratic mandate and if the majority Russian population want to join with Russia let them. That is democracy after all isn't it ? If the principle can be applied to the Balkans then it should be here. No double standards.

The same goes for France and Spain suppressing the Basques and Catalonia is getting it's wish for independence should the Catalan's want it in the near future.

When you see some of the ideas many of the extreme factions are coming up with for a future Ukraine then it is no wonder the Russian population in the east has concerns and those Tatar's who think the Kiev regime is on their side may get a rude awakening when they see some of the elements pushing for change there.

But I don't see tanks massing along Hadrians Wall?

The difference is that, nowadays, the West have a democracy of sorts, while in the East voting is not free.

Ukrainian and Russian languages aren't that different more like dialects than separate languages. And sovereignty is not as cut and dried between the two.
