I like you too Stu, but if you ever take to looting and arson, just know, that will change immediately. Got it?

Exactly right. How society works normally is that we police ourselves within our families and communities. When that fails there can never be enough police to keep control.

as someone entirely reliant on newspaper coverage, is the situation that bad? has society really degenerated by such a huge extent or is this just a freakish one off?

also the papers are all saying this is UK wide. Is this happening everywhere or is it just wales, northern ireland and scotland that have escaped the rioting?

What started as a peaceful protest in Tottenham after a man was shot dead last week erupted into a gang-related riot. After seeing how ill prepared the Police were, different gangs and other ne'er-do-wells went out looting all over London. Since then it's started up all over England only but mainly Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and the West Midlands. It's almost like they are competing against each other to see who can cause the most damage and nick the most stuff.

the coverage from the canadian and australian papers remind me alot of what i read about the french riots back in 2009. their perspective though is informed by the vancouver riots and the cronulla and redfern riots whereas our coverage in 2009 seemed to entirely ignore northern ireland. that in turn suggests that once again we probably won't learn anything from this

0131: There have been reports of a series of loud explosions at a diesel depot near Tottenham High Road, in North London. The fire, police and ambulance services are all at the scene, between Ashley Road and Park View Road. The police have been telling residents they are assessing the situation, to decide whether they will need to start evacuating houses nearby.

Lets hope it doesn't turn into another Buncefield - from my Berkhamsted bedroom window 6-7 years ago that scene was apocalyptic

I've neither read nor seen anything that suggests this is gang related. It seems to be purely opportunistic.

I take it that was written with sarcasm?

i feel like i've been away from england too long. i call football 'soccer,' crisps are 'chips,' and i managed to pass some shops today with out kicking in the windows, stealing some stuff and then setting it on fire. maybe i should turn in my burgundy passport?

I've always been very liberal but this is getting boring now and most importantly it's affecting the football. Send in the tanks...

This is the key as far as I'm concerned and it's where we've been going wrong for a few years now. Too much reliance is placed by people on the state to sort out their problems. Troublesome child? The school's problem or possibly 'ADHD' so NHS. Noisy neighbour? Call the police rather than having an adult conversation. No job? The state better well provide for you then. And so on...

I have my A-Level Crime and punishment Sociology module in January. I am really looking forward to it now.

Though I'll have to try and write it in a way where I don't come across as racist.

Well, you could use bits from Manchester last night, where 90% of the people were white.

It's not whether people are black or white, it seems to be about coming from areas that have a large underclass - but then that doesn't explain Gloucester.

On the other hand you say you don't want to "come across as rascist". Is that because you are not rascist, or because you don't want people to realise you are? :naughty:

    I've just seen a tweet from@skynewsticker:

BREAKING NEWS: David Cameron announces amnesty for looters if they pay for looted items in the hope it will boost the economy.

Basically, a lot of work we are focusing on is race and crime and how people respond to it. So you've got to write it well enough so it doesn't look like you're just saying one race does one thing where as another does another thing.

And don't worry, all this rioting will be perfect for my exam. Especially the moron on sky news who when asked why he was rioting he said, 'because we can'

This is almost as amusing as the police last night rounding up and barricading in the EDL who came down to "protect" the streets!

Just out of interest, does anyone know how many water cannons the police have? I heard they bought 2 in 1985 to evaluate, and decided that they were not tactically viable, so I guess they probably don't have any others.

This would mean any they use would need to be sourced from elsewhere (Ireland I assume), but they can't have *that* many can they?

Don't worry, a friend on twitter has just answered. Apparently there are 6, which are all based in Northern Ireland.
Also a journo has also tweeted that the NI police will be happy to hand them over as they hardly use them any more as they are no manueverable enough, run out of water too quickly, are ineffective, and usually end up escalating problems.

They torched Batchwood Hall last night luckily noone was injured. Also been reported that 3 people were run down and killed last night during the riots in Birmingham.

A historic pub in Dumpstable was also torched. Like Batchwood they're not connecting it the disorder all over the country...

Not sure why people keep saying this.

They torched the Batchwood tennis and golf clubs, which was apparently entirely unrelated to the riots.

When you see the responses of the so called 'parents' of these hoodlums and those associated with them ie community workers it is no surprise to find that these hoodlums do what they do.

It's as if they have done nothing wrong at all and their behaviour is excused by all sorts of vague social ills.

As for the politicians. Once more being reactive rather than proactive. And the shameless grandstanding and attempts to make political capital out of it all are embarassing and a sad reflection on the political class who are supposed to be leading this country forward.

Jesus Blair II announces more spurious soundbites whilst at the same time curtailing the prison building programme and who has a wet Home Secretary who thinks nothing of halving what are already pathetic sentences for criminals who plead guilty.

And as for Milliband junior the man with all the charisma of a wet lettuce and all the intelligence of a dry **** yet again decides to jump on another popular bandwagon in the wake of the newspaper hacking scandal.

Let's not forget as a advisor and creator of New Labour he was instrumental in the last thirteen years of NL misrule where the slogan' tough on crime and the causes of crime' like all the other shallow ideas were shown to be utterly false.

As for the Liberals.....They want to study the criminal and help the poor darlings whilst continually ignoring the victims.

    Tremendous.

Isn't the golf club situated next to the hall?

Absolutely. Couple this with the fact that the government are happy to oblige (why wouldn't they, it gets them more votes) by showing that there is no reason to better yourself in the world, or if you do you're punished for it (well, pay more tax) and it's no wonder the country is going to ****.

The fact that the above cannot without the toerag calling the police and getting them arrested and charged for assault is also a problem. Pain is natural deterrent, and also VERY CHEAP.

Parents should be able to slap troublemakers

Teachers should be able to slap troublemakers

The Police should be able to slap troublemakers
